Avatar wasnt the first American anime. That racing one on cartoonnetwork was. That was a pretty damn good looking series too.
I guess teen titans could count as one too.
Also if you think about it anime is just a small term for "animation".
So in other words America invented anime its just the Japanese designed their own version of animation which is refered as anime.
You ever wonder why anime characters have big eyes? Just look back at disney and looney toons and thats where it orginated from. Those were the first "animes" created if you wanna get technical.
The difference lies in most Americans seeing animated series as some form of comedy show or some children's saturday morning cartoon show. In other words people either see looney toons, some disney movie or the simpsons. In Japan anime is seen as anything live action movies or series can be and a lot of them hold a more serious and darker role. Then theres those weird Japanese humor animes. What they find funny isnt necessary something the average American will find funny... or they will plain and simply find down right distubring.
