Well, I suppose I should introduce why I decided to create this topic. I now have in my possession ever single one of the 'main series' Final Fantasy games, excluding the japan released FFIII and also FFXI. (Although I have played FFXI, but things like this is the reason why I stopped.)

Moving along, I have roughly 10 games of RPG goodness, too bad I haven't played to completion half of those games. Especially anything before 7. Yes, I know my inner fanboy was reduced to tears because of this fact. (manly tears btw) Anyway I decided to rectify this situation so I plan to play every single FF game I own in order all the way up to FF13.

I figure, I come back to this topic every so often to brief everyone on my progress. Give my own personal review of the game, plus I thought this could be a topic where everyone can discuss what moments they enjoyed from the different final fantasy games of the past. I did this also because I didn't want any off-topic warnings or anything and just have a spot were everyone can just express their love of the series and which games particular they loved.

So here is the score right now.

Final Fantasy I-Not Completed (but in progress)

Final Fantasy II-Not Completed

Final Fantasy IV-Not Completed

Final Fantasy V-Not Completed

Final Fantasy VI (the classic)- Not Completed (yes i know, this hurt me too)

Final Fantasy VII-Completed

Final Fantasy VIII-Completed

Final Fantasy IX (Zidane's a pimp)- Completed

Final Fantasy X-Not Completed

Final Fantasy XII-Not Completed

Final Fantasy XIII-Not Completed

OK everyone wish me luck. I hope this topic doesn't get stale. lol

Ok, this is my first impression of Final Fantasy I. Man, the FF games have come a long way since this one. Basically you have no build up into the characters. In the start of the game, you're given a choice of 4 characters in your party. You can choose what class they are, (ex: fighter, thief, black mage, etc.) and the names. Which is a interesting about of choice.

I think initially the game was modeled after the old D&D and AD&D systems. Because like in those games you have a choice of the what classes your character can be before playing. There are other examples to, like how they handle magic in the game. What I found interesting, there is no MP gauge in the game. How magic is dealt with. You have to buy each spell for each character and depending on what level your character is, depends on how many times you can cast a particular spell. For instance at level 3, I can cast three level 1 spells and two level 2 spells.

Which is also how D&D handled their magic in the earlier systems.

Other thing I found interesting, was how little you're given in the start of the game. Your four party members are only given 400gil. No weapons, no armor and no items. I found that out the hard way, when my first encounter, I was pummeling the wolf with my bare fists. I swear the game out the bat, almost forces you to grind so you can stock on everything before you get going.

Oh well getting away from the mechanics of the game. The story of the game is, your four party members are the chosen light warriors, that are destined to save the land. And their first mission is to save the princess Sarah from the evil knight Garland. Man, I didn't realize how much 8 bit theater took their storyline from the original FF game.

As daunting as everything might seem, I'm actually enjoying the game. Granted the graphics are completely dated and show their age, I'm impressed with some of the systems of the game. And I wonder when I'll be able to upgrade my Mages into Wizards and so on. ^^

Completed all of them.

Even the Mystic Quest one. FF3, FFV, FF8, FF11, FFT:A and FFT:A2 are my favourite.

Also the Pandemonium Warden only takes 5 hours to defeat. That's half of the hours that a raid on WoW takes place. Stupid clans are stupid.

To be honest that's now. Back in 08 when that article was written that wasn't the case. The developers had to dumb it down a lot so players could actual complete it. Also, I honestly don't know what raid you're talking about in WoW that takes 10+ hours.

Actually do you know the blog of GMDave? He said that on maximum the PW would take a bad LS 10 hours to defeat. And this is a guy from the inside.

And there's lulzy video of WoW'ers going on raids about 10+ hours, I might be wrong, but I've heard podcasts where people brag how they've went on quests and raids that took them half a day to complete.

Still. Still. I might be wrong.

Ok...this is the difference between the games. Quests in WoW and quests in FFXI are two different things. You can spend several hours in FFXI doing one quest. You can spend several hours in WoW, doing a quest line. Meaning several parts to a quest. And i can say it's very easy to spend half a day doing a quest line in WoW, because half of the time is usually spent in transit. You'll get bounced to different spots in the map to talk to this guy, collect some items, move talk to the right next to the guy you originally talked to, then be asked to move to a separate area on the map to seek out one guy for this quest.

Also the raids in WoW have save points in them. So after you've downed a certain boss, the instance will retain you're status for about a week or so, so you can get back together for the next parts of the instance. In that instance, if they decide to forgo the save points and keep pressing on then, it probably could run up to 10hrs. But at that point its up to the raid members, and not due to the difficulty of the instance.

Also a NM fight in FFXI is different than a Boss fight in WoW. The NM fights, the majority of the time you calculated, is spent fighting the mob. In the boss fights in WoW's instances, the majority of the time is spent killing the grunt mobs in order to make your way to the final boss fight. And that boss fight can take anywhere from 10 mins to a half hour. Oppose to the straight two hour boss fight you have in FFXI.

Also I found this and this on your Pandemonium Warden

QUOTE
In response, Square Enix stated, "Discussion has spread significantly throughout forums, and it has become apparent that this is indeed an issue of major unrest in the community." The company implied that the methods players have employed may have been sub-optimal, as Square Enix didn't anticipate that NM encounters would be as protracted as they've proven to be. To remedy this, they will alter the difficulty of defeating Pandemonium Warden, Absolute Virtue, and Jailer of Love.

The whole thing about FF7 vs. FF6 was never about which was the greater of the two. FF7 gets more praise because it's the game that brought a whole slew of fans to the series. Hell, FF7 was the first FF game I ever played and I've been sticking by the series ever since. A lot of fans have similar histories such as that.
Which is why it has such a stronger fan base.

FF6, I've heard from more veteran FF players, was the greatest FF game of the series. I'm not saying that it isn't or is, I don't know personally because I haven't played it yet. Which is part of the reason why I'm taking part in this. ^^

Funnily, I'm prob the only person that think FFT in PSOne is the best game in FF Series. Sure it doesn't have good graphic or even CG but story-wise it is the best among the others and the strategy-based gameplay give the players lots of room for imagination to run wild in battle which is pretty much the biggest selling point for me

Hmm.... FF Tactics had CG in it. At least the intro did. And I loved my time with FF Tactics truly a great game. Good enough to be put on a pedestal with the main line games.

Also added a poll because, why not. ^^

+2 for this.

Also, I highly loved FFX since it took Final Fantasy to a whole new level in the generation it was released. Tidus is an odd character at first (sorta like Squall, but no where as bad) but eventually you get used to him. And that ending still makes me release kitten tears to this day.

But dude, you're going to play ALL the games in one go? That's going to be some insane game time (what like 1000 hours?!?). But good luck with it, I'm sure you'll find some you love and others you will hate. biggrin.gif

Well in the interest of this poll and as a general comment, my son and I have been playing the series together for awhile now, yesterday we finished Final Fantasy VII and began FF VIII.

as a general thing in terms of story I like FFVI but they all have their pluses and minuses

We need to finish all of them before we start FF XIII

btw we got a great ending for the game, Cloud countered Sephiroth and killed him and he showed me a way to kill Emerald weapon in mere seconds with Barrett.

Am I the only one who loves FF3 and FF5 for their Job System?

I just...like the fact that leveling up isn't the ONLY thing I can grind.

Especially with the Final Fantasy Tactics saga, where grinding is key. But not leveling up, but to get those abilities to put bosses into comas. Comparing those games with their freedom and flow, it makes the rest of the FF's kinda of stuck to a key-basic. But then again, I'm ignoring the fact that the choices you make in terms of equipment, determine what's your style of play and which skills you bring into battle.

But then again...those previous games I was talking about, make it so flashy and quick to change jobs and roles that you don't need to dash off to a shop and get materias or draw magic from monsters.

I just...like it because it's there. Open menu > Jobs > Pick character > Choose the job > Done! With FFT and FFTA 1/2 it's slightly harder...

Find weapon>Equip it>Get AP>Max it>Go to the next weapon.

Maybe I...just...love grinding levels. I like progress. Or maybe I just want to be enrolled in a quest where I have to repeat my actions over and over again, so I can feel safe with my choices, considering that in the end, I'll eventually get all abilities and weapons.

...I'mma nutcase.

While I've yet to play FFIII, V is one of my favorites because of the job system. It makes it so each playthrough is slightly different, whereas the games with set classes (Like IV) are pretty much the same every time through, just with higher or lower character levels.

My favorite is X, though. Unlike many people, I loved Tidus. I could relate to him really well, having similar parent problems. Plus, I loved Blitzball. I just found it incredibly fun. So much so that I reset something like 10+ times to beat the story one. Also reset 20+ times until I got Jecht Shot. Stupid quicktime event. dry.gif

The sphere grid is actually one of my favorite leveling styles. It's nice to be able to SEE how your character will change before you invest in a powerup.

Final Fantasy Tactics is also one of my favorites, but the JP grinding gets annoying after a while. And then there's freakin' Velius. Argh. rawr.gif

I'm with you there Yaka, although I the only FF with job system that I played was FFT but its pretty much the most interesting for me. And... you call yourself a nutcase? I'm prob a bigger nutcase than you... I did all the side quests and have everyone in my army complete job master mode (Yes including Cloud and that strange robot thingy) not to mention that I even spend hours just to make sure that I got all the weapons although some of them are so mediocre that I never use them before the final battle...

If you're a nutcase, I'm a perfectionist...

I was thinking about this Sir Whirly, and I decided, I wish they'd make a full 3D remake of Xenogears. Not that redheaded stepchild Xenosaga, but Xenogears the game that I completely fell in love with and still believe is the greatest RPG I've played.

This was probably the thing I hated the most about X-2. Once you understood how Blitzball in FFX worked (and got past the breathing underwater for 10 minutes thing), it was awesome. Then you get to X-2 - straight crap simulation.
