The timeline is a never explicitly stated, but this takes place post-time skip (during Naruto's Rasengan training) with Naruto reminiscing about different parts of his life outside of strict chronological order.
That's why we get bits of his early civilian life, his rookie genin career, and his current state now.
I hope it makes more sense now.

Curious I never considered the part about the kagebunshin. I can actually trully imagine that happening in canon fter he discovered the use of them. the playing with them, and having fun with the,. How many kids can actually bring their imaginary friends to life?
