He was the greatest boxer ever but he's probably the most famous Kentuckian.

I thought he just got some mild sickness.

He was the Greatest fighter I ever saw. Though I was never able to watch his fights live since he retired when I was about 4, I've had the privilege of watching just about every single recorded fight he ever had. I've never seen anybody capable of giving and taking the punishment he could in the ring. He was phenomenal. And that's coming from a die-hard Marvelous Marvin Hagler fan.

This is what I wrote-up on my Rooster Teeth blog, so I'll just reshare it.

I was born in 1988, I never got to see Muhammad Ali fight live. When I attended Minnesota State University, though, my roommate in the dorms was a boxer, and I started getting into watching the sport.

In 2012, the summer after graduating, I spent most days applying for journalism jobs and helping my parents remodel the house. As days would turn to night, I would make myself a drink, settle on the couch and watch old boxing fights on ESPN Classics.

Many of them were Ali's and it was easy to see why people called him the greatest. The way he moved, the way he punched, his strategy, his confidence in the ring. Even though his fights were from so long ago, watching him in the ring made him my favorite fighter.

Of course, Ali was more than just the fighter. He was a controversial figure for his stance on the Vietnam War and later in life he actually helped with hostage negotiations. It really shows how he was more than just an athlete, he was one of those larger than life figures.

So RIP to the champ, the greatest, my favorite.

Yet someone else that I thought was dead.

I'm going to be honest I've heard people saying he was the best but I've never seen a single fight of his.

R.I.P.

Which I've told you - time and time again - is dangerous! There will never be consensus, son, among those you have helped to ascend. They will all differ in their views of what it means to be free. The peace you so desperately seek does not exist.

These men are united now by a common cause. But when this battle is finished they will fall to fighting amongst themselves about how best to ensure control. In time it will lead to war. You will see.

In NYC, there's a sculpture of famous people in display each day. Morgan Freeman, the Pope, you name it. Today, I have seen Muhammad Ali in his prime era. I don't know if they always had it, but it doesn't matter. It's here and it only tells us that he will always be the greatest.

RIP.

All the reports I saw said "respiratory problems." None of them ever said what it was.

CBS News now reporting it was "septic shock due to unspecified natural causes."

He will be remembered as one the greatest, not just because of his boxing but how he fought against racism in the US.
