Maybe it was the noise in the distance that stirred her, or perhaps it was the putrid stench of garbage she’d been trying to ignore all night by burrowing her nose in Glenn’s shoulder.
Her eyes fluttered open to see a starless blue-gray sky, among them dreary clouds and brown hair and dirtied plaid.
Maggie did a double take.
"Hey, I uh—"
Tara was crouched beside her, looking at the floor and thumbing at the blanket that touched her shoes.
"—Glenn told me to wake you."
Maggie had felt the absence of warmth next to her before Tara’s words registered, and her question died on her lips as Tara jerked a thumb behind her while looking her in the eyes.
"Abraham. He’s with Abraham on a run…" Maggie’s eyes reminded Tara of home "…for supplies. Not running-running, ‘cause that’d be stupid…" she fumbled out breathily as Maggie smiled at her. If her eyes reminded Tara of home, her smile took her there.
"But Glenn’s not here…" Maggie said as she stretched, southern accent thick like morning fog and it made Tara’s heart race "…which means I can sleep a little longer."
Tara could only laugh and give in.
"Not too long."
Before she crossed the threshold, Tara turned back to look at Maggie’s disheveled hair, sleepy smile, and the vacant spot next to her. She feigned a smile as guilt enveloped her.
"And… you look beautiful when you wake up."
Maggie stared back at her with home in her eyes.
