I'm trying to find a good free/cheap video editor software that can also convert it into popular video formats such as MPG.

I have a bunch of videos from my alpha testing of Phantasy Star Online 2, which I hope to convert and upload to places like Youtube. One of the requirements is that the editor needs to let me insert a caption/watermark that says "© SEGA". I've tried Windows Live Movie Maker, but it always puts a border around my video and I cannot get it to match the dimensions of the original video - so the quality suffers.

So, any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I use Format Factory to convert most of my videos into .avi, since they seem to play the smoothest. I also like to use it to convert video files into iPod/iPad friendly files.

There's probably better file conversion programs out there, but I've been using this one for three years now, and haven't really had a problem with it. You can also convert picture and music files, and write DVDs onto your computer. It has plenty of options, but I haven't tinkered around with it enough to know if you can put a watermark somewhere, so I can't confirm if you can fill that requirement.

I wish I knew of a good free video editing software, but alas I've always used Adobe premiere. I think there are like free trails for it, but I'd suggest going with Booms recommendation. Lots of luck Smitter

I use Sony Vegas 7 for editing my videos.. and Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate for converting them into different file formats.. I like Sony Vegas cause it has lots of features.. and Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate can convert into a lot of file formats

Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions!

I've written them all down, and will do research to hopefully find out what will best fit my requirements. For now, I'm just thinking about gaming movies, but I do also take videos with my camera/mobile phone on holidays and days out, which would be worth editing and saving onto my PC.

OK, I went with Sony Vegas in the end (thanks Inori!). The included tutorials impressed me, and I was able to make a video using the trial version.



It definitely looks like a good buy, and hopefully I can improve the encoding etc as I use it more.

I used to use Vegas Pro 10 until it kept giving me a stupid memory error bug. A memory error bug that had no worldly place being on my laptop, since the thing had 8GB of the stuff, more than enough to handle the kind of videos I was editing/rendering.

Nowadays I stick with Premiere Pro CS5, much more reliable, although a little trickier to understand from an interface perspective.
