Can't it be both? It's going to help underfunded schooling, and repair some of his image. It's pretty much Win/Win for both sides.
But nothing can make up for Jar-Jar. Ever.

But nothing can make up for Jar-Jar. Ever.
Why would his image need repairing? Sure, the fanboys get their panties in a bunch over the prequels, but George has always seemed like a nice guy. Especially to fans.
Also, I really don't get what the big deal is with Jar-Jar that people just cannot get over it; are people that obsessive about part of a movie that it tarnishes their image of someone or feel said person needs to "make it up"?
I doubt it's a publicity stunt. He's one of a couple millionaires who are donating money to charity. He and Bill Gates are giving half their fortune to charity; William Buffet is also involved. They're reaching out to other millionaires as well.
I'm not sure what George Lucas would really need publicity for anyways; as far as I know he doesn't have anything major in the works.

Star Wars fandom has a habit of over-reacting to things; see the people who act like Han shooting first is a life or death affair for an example.

But is it still alright for me to think that the plot was ruined in episodes 2 and 3? I think George Lucas is awesome still but I can still hold a negative opinion over the later movies. The two aren't mutually exclusive. That's the point you're making yes? Even though the topic is about billionaires giving away half their fortunes.

Hey man, I'm not saying you can't have an opinion or anything; I just think Star Wars fandom has a bad habit of over-reacting to the dumbest things.
Though personally I think the only one of the prequels that was just plain bad was Episode 2. Though I think it was the fault of the "love" half of the movie, as I liked Obi-Wans quest. Most of the problems I would add up to Hayden and Natalie Portman; I've seen blocks of wood that could act better then they did.

George Steinbrenner (owner of the Yankees) had his entire $1.1 billion dollars estate given to his sons since he died this year. If he had died last year, there would have been a 45% tax on it and the government would have taken around 500 million dollars. It looks to only be higher when its up for reinstatement due to the economy conditions in the United States.
If you donate your fortune towards non profit and charity its tax exempt. Better to donate your money to a good cause then have the government take it.
