Wish that Kishi would just stop trying to 'fix' Naruto, I guess that no one ever told him the phrase 'digging your own grave'. I will remember fondly the characters that made me love Naruto that were sacrificed at the all-mighty altar that is money (and crazy fan boys/girls).

Hey all, I was wondering what everyone thought was the best place to start a Naruto fan fiction at? I've written ones only starting at the beginning of the series, a total rewrite if you will, but I've seen fics starting at the beginning of the series, after the Wave Arc, after the Sasuke Retrival Mission and ones starting at the beginning of the Shippuden series. Which do most people prefer of those options?

I think starting when the characters are around ten or so as it gives you a chance to build a foundation to work off of and create a new story to tell instead of just following canon with some deviations.

As a writer myself, I prefer starting at the beginning because it gives me the opportunity to orchestrate future events that would otherwise be inaccessible without retconning them. As @Frankie mentioned above, you can also throw in some nice flashbacks during their early childhoods so the readers can get a bit more of a perspective about your take on the world and certain edges to it or the characters themselves.

You can start them whenever you want! Just think of a right time and make sure you can tackle its problems.

If you have any more questions, feel free to adress them here or in another thread. Good luck!

As the others have stated, the start is where I also begin.

Something about being able to alter some events in favor of what story you're writing always intrigued me.

Changing it but at the same time not changing it to the point that it doesn't seem possible or outrageous.

Well, Sly, I myself began in an alternate path from the Sasuke Retrieval arc for my fanfic. Plus I have changes to the world for this to be a different story in many cases. What you want to do is to be able to figure out what your goals are. World building and character building are among the most important things. What's your path for Naruto and his world? How will you do things differently, or even similarly? Will your world be quite different or not? All of these you need to think about.

I prefer starting after the war. Even before the whole thing ended, I preferred writing fanfiction after the series ends with them bringing Sasuke back. I always dreamed of many colorful team 7 moments, rather than everyone getting married with a time gap.

Why do people NOT ship these two? I just don't get it.

Probably cause they hate Sakura. When she's probably the most developed female character in the whole show.

I respect Hinata, but Sakura deserves some too.

Honestly, I've always been a fan of after Pein arc fics. It held so much potential and I really like when authors toy with Naruto's newfound responsibilties as one of the strongest ninjas in the leaf, make him somewhat mature and then encounter new problems and conflicts for him to fight...I like this especially because I was heavily disappointed with the Pein arc aftermath in the series

Bonus if the fic is a NS one, I read a fic that had all of this a long time ago and it was one of my favs, too bad it was unfinished and I ended up losing it

However I have no problems if the author chooses to start at any other point, as long as the story and the characters are on point and they are able to pull it off

I chose to start mine at the Final Valley/Valley of the End fight in Part 1, since my friend Kurt and I did it as Naruto and Sasuke's fight was going on at the time, though with the alterations to the canon, the changes in Naruto: The Demon Within are pretty damn evident, even at the beginning of its continuity with all that we learned from it, plus our own additions here and there. We wanted to make sure the story would be able to flow well, and now it is to make it more or less similar to regular canon, BUT to surpass it in every possible way :)

I started mine after the war because it was open game, nothing had been written about it. When I first started my fic the war had just started so deciding what the outcome was and the aftermath of it all was fun. Personally I don't like writing fics from the beginning since they've already been written, but I can see where other people like it because they get to toy with things and change the outcome but I personally like to write what hasn't even been written yet, but that's just me.

Yeah, and I find where I'm starting off to be a good point, since with events changing from how they were normally there, as well as even at the beginning of the story, it tells you this world that Kurt and I built is gonna be different from canon.
