Its weird how quiet it is. The worse for us is coming through tonight and into tomorrow. It was really just raining all day but now the wind is picking up.

EDIT: A chunk of NY is without power, the Empire State building is one of the only buildings still active.

Agreed.

And it's now the morning after for NY and other coastline states, though Sandy even if no longer a 'hurricane' is still moving through other states, with sustained winds of 60 mph and dumping rain everywhere she hits. Here's updated information on Sandy's impacts so far -

I'm a part of this situation. It's day 2 here and it seems like the rain is the only left from the Hurricane. The wind is still strong, but it seems like it's dying out slowly. I will be ok, trust me.

Let's not fear get the best of us. Just like NaruSaku, stay strong and good comes to those who waits. Nothing can destroy us.

Luckily the damage here wasn't terribly severe. Some downed trees, the Derecho that came through here earlier in the year was much, much worse. I'm about 10 miles north/northeast of the Washington DC line, it was pretty much just a blustery, chilly storm without any lightning and thunder.

I actually think the flooding is worse than any wind damage. But as we start cleaning up I figure we'll figure out just how damaging the different aspects of it are.

After five days of cloudy skies, it will be nice to see the sun again tomorrow. Hopefully.

I hope everyone is OK?

I've been reading about NYC on the BBC, it's incredible to see just how hard people have been hit by the hurricane. I hope you all pull through OK. Stay safe and strong!

I'm ok. NYC has never been this dark in such a long time. I never seen so much suspensions. It's a big mess in the city. The blackout is just crazy. Other than that, I'm fine, but hope others are as well.

Good to hear you're OK. smile.gif

Yeah, the UK news has been covering the storm and we're hearing that 2 million people are without power in NYC. No communications, no cooking, no refrigeration, no (central/electric) heating. I just hope everyone in NYC and the surrounding states pulls through OK and power is restored as quickly as possible.

It's also been amazing to see the iconic subway completely flooded, very surreal pictures. It's going to take weeks, perhaps even months, for everything to go back to some degree of normality for all the Americans affected.

PRAISE THE LORD!!! Power is back online! biggrin.gif

OH. MY. GOD!!! I don't think I can handle this kind of situation again. I mean it. (Sandy, you *insert profanity*!)

Well first off, NYC only devastation was Lower Manhattan, Staten Island and other places. But NJ... Jersey Shore gotten the WORSE damage I had ever seen on a newspaper. Let me tell you guys this... Atlantic City (famous for casinos and the longest broadwalk in the world), well... we just lost over $10 Million and more because of the hurricane... I don't know how long we're gonna reestablish AC after this. Majority of the shores lost homes, businesses, attractions, everything!

Now where I'm at, our main power company during the hurricane was flooded so that had made the entire cities and neighboring towns in the dark for at least 2-3 days! And I just gotten it back a few minutes ago. Public transportation was suspended both ways for trains, buses and subways. I'm hoping that in the morning that the buses are working so I can get to work in the evening.

Bad side about it is, majority of the food is spoiled, including the chicken, and other meats. I know for sure, various supermarkets have spoiled food as well.

Welcome back, Derock! biggrin.gif

Hopefully power will be stable in your area from now on. A situation like this makes you realise how important power is, it's not just for PCs, TVs and lights!

Were you able to get to work OK?

I'm lucky to be living in the UK, we never get earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, or hurricanes. Storms are pretty much the only thing we worry about, and even those are nowhere near as strong as Sandy.

Actually, power is stable but since Newark is the largest city of New Jersey, not many people still have it. A good example is while my street is on a certain grid that has power, the houses behind me doesn't have power because they are located on a different grid.

Worse thing right now is getting gas. I'll tell you guys this: for those who needed it, you have to find the closest station that is open with its power on. And you have to get it asap, if not, you WILL get stuck in very long lines that can go for blocks and even miles! Plus, they are lines of people outside getting gas to refill their generators. Both sides have to get a certain amount of gallons of gas with prices of a gallon is about $3.60+. Just right now, gas stations now offering gas to cars with specific numbers on their license plates! AND there are some charging customers more than the price shown!

Now I'd managed to get to work and back safely since the buses was back on after I had gotten my power on. But as I was on my way back home, after passing through the downtown/business district and the train station, it was nothing but pitch darkness since those sections have NO power on! No traffic lights, street lights, nothing! It was like that until we passed through police precinct that lights were on my blocks. But after my blocks, not until yesterday, the local McDonalds and White Castle were closed and covered with darkness.

Oh, and trains are still suspended if you want to go to NYC. Only the local buses can take you guys over there.

Wow, that's rough. It's never easy walking through darkened areas as you have to constantly be on your guard. I once had to walk through a long dark road because the power was cut due to an idiot ploughing his car into a streetlight and totalling it. I can't imagine having to go through entire blocks like that.

Hopefully the petrol problem will calm down as more and more power grids come back online. Petrol is so vital that few people can cope without it, and it's not nice to hear about stations price gouging to take advantage of demand. sad.gif
