It was just interesting to me. I like how the director took a completely original and somewhat taboo plot and made it into a good movie. Plus which, it gave me the chills.

If that makes any sense argh1.png Honestly, I can't think up a good answer. I just liked it sweatdrop.gif

NAH I get it haha. don't worry! the appeal in the taboo is very enticing, ia (I mean, any situation usually it is). and if you're having trouble explaining yourself then it's okay too; everyone has different tastes, you found a diamond in the rough. I guess the level of creepy-tolerance differs from person to person.

on my side, after seeing one particular gif, I don't think I'll be seeing this movie anytime soon. at least not sober argh1.png

Hm... Running aroud in tights capes and bathing suits... I kinda have to agree with you on that one. :/

you can't really dismiss the costumes because it's so out of the norm. take into account of the 'why's as well:

- the costume itself allows the greatest amount of movement, for one important thing. with loose fitting clothes, the costume wearer is at risk to having it getting caught in the area around them and/or being grabbed in a fight. also it's very aerodynamic for flight, the form-fitting material doesn't run the risk of in-air complications.

- a countless number of superheroes don't just wear "tights," the material of what they wear is usually enhanced with some sort of bullet-proof, chemical-resistant component. it helps in life and death situations. not to mention sometimes the material allows the wearer to freely use their powers without any collateral damage. think: The Flash.

- quick-changing. some superheroes hide their true selves with masks in their day-to-day lives. they need to keep up the mirage if they want any semblance of a normal life, but as the life of a superhero, the call for help is never far away - the costume wearer needs to shed their skin as fast as possible and save the day. the form-fitting "tights" are easy and comfortable enough to fit underneath their civvies. unlike telephone booths, there is always a free alleyway available for a quick super fast strip-tease.

and no comment on the bathing suits. it's not that complicated, but it is controversial (thankfully).

marketing, aesthetics, and consistency. in terms of marketing: sex sells. comics have always had a target audience and that target audience enjoy, if not don't even mind, their women to kick ass while half naked. with aesthetics? one can say that a super heroine uses her body as an advantage against men who get off on physical appeal. I myself don't really buy this. it's pretty obvious that the big-time bad dudes get enjoyment out of other appeals (sadistic actions, power, greed, destruction, money, etc) instead of physical intimacy. in fact, it's really annoying to think that women need to walk around in bikinis to defeat their enemies which are implied to be only sex-craving thugs. so frustrating. if anything, I really don't think I'd be able to kick ass if my crotch was hanging out everywhere, but I can understand that comics - while being open-minded towards their female readers - really cater to heterosexual men.

all of this is consistent and it works I guess. I don't know the numbers when it comes to sales, but my guess is that even though this topic is a touchy one, it's profitable and ensures positive results (again from the expected audience). now that I think about it, I know of only a few heroines that aren't made to depend on their costumes to measure their strength and fighting prowess (but then again, I'm relatively new to comic-land, so there might be quite a few that I'm not taking into account).

Well, you all are more than entitled to your opinions; I'd be lying if I said I didn't think you were the wrongest guys in Wrongtown though.

mte. I can't wrap my mind around how easily dismissive some people are with such broad subjects.

It's baffling yeah. But a lot of the time, the dismissiveness comes from not actually experiencing the material or experiencing very little. Or from just watching the films, of which there are as many crap ones as their are good ones. I try not to let it bother me.

I could name a few if you'd like.

On the DC side, there's Batwoman, Batgirl (Stephanie Brown), Zatanna, Black Canary, Katana, Manhunter (the Kate Spencer one), Vixen, Big Barda (though she's now deceased), Cassandra Cain (former Batgirl), Dove, Raven, Renee Montoya (former Gotham police officer, currently The Question), Lady Shiva (one of the top martial artists in the DCU), Donna Troy and Black Alice. I can't remember any more right now.

As for Marvel, well, there's Black Widow, Rogue, Sue Storm, Wasp, Kate Bishop, Elektra... uhh... I'm running low here.

My knowledge of Marvel isn't quite what it is of DC, despite having a character encyclopedia of Marvel...

Niiiice, all of it! I can add DC's The Veil too. she's fairly new I think.

I think the fishnets suit Zatanna well. Largely because she's as much a magician as she is a superhero. Oh, speaking of Zatanna she has her own comic that just started up. Black Canary not as much, but it doesn't bother me a huge deal because it not only looks fitting on her but it's a classic look for her. Not to mention she kicks ass regardless; I believe she's supposed to be up there among the ranks of the top martial artists in DC alongside people like Batman and Lady Shiva.

There should be trades of Cassandra Cains Batgirl series easily found; I haven't read much of it, but it's highly regarded by quite a few people.

I'm sorry I couldn't name more Marvel women for you though; like I mentioned, I enjoy Marvel but I'm more of a DC guy and my knowledge skews thus.

I'm just curious, I wonder how it will affect readers if the busts of Super-women were toned down quite a bit?? Including Power Girl's?

True on both counts. I didn't mean to imply that I disagreed with their costumes entirely, I guess those two were pictured in my mind clearer than the rest. I totally get why Zatanna's costumes like that and I support it; I love the magician vibe and look, the boots - also Black Canarys' jacket and bodice. The only thing that I think look better are black/gray nylon or cotton stockings instead of the nets. They'd be less likely to snag and they look more sleek. They fit the part without being overtly sexualized. Fishnets are meant to present a preemptive reason for being worn (guess) whereas the other aforementioned types of stockings, those made of nylon and cotton, are not. It's universally known that fishnets are meant for sex appeal, not fighting, whichever way you see it.

and this, of course, I'm saying with the context of the comic-book universe in mind, one that lacks realism in almost every aspect - as big as phasing a giant bullet through a planet to small things like what the women wear before putting on the boots. It's not impossible to prove sensibility through the little things.

also lol that's alright, take a break. trust me you still have your rep intact - no matter from what side of the spectrum you hail tongue.gif

well if it actually has an effect on a reader, that person wasn't really paying attention to the relevant material and wasted time on "reading" (aka he or she will have to look elsewhere for fap-fodder, if that's all they were doin') Those who use comic books for the way they were meant to be used will have no problem with the transition - hell I doubt they'd even notice; cup size =/= amount ass kicked

lol idk maybe the type of thinking that sure sounds like it belongs in a bad movie? up to you, I just found an interesting discussion to latch onto. sure it's OT, but it's something. also on the topic of being off-topic, your observation wasn't too far off. pictureem0.gif

here:
Tarzan & Jane - this made the pain even worse because it was the ONLY vhs that survived my dad's van in west texas during the summer. ALL OF THEM MELTED AND THIS IS WHAT I GET. I remember I didn't mind the movie at first when I started watching it, but continuously over and over and over made me feel sick to my stomach. it was like a clusterfuq in the worst way. It should've been called "Corn: A Collection of Stale Cliche Jungle Adventures: Two Humans and their Shenanigans with Animal Friends!" from each one starting off as OH HEY LET'S SET UP THE PREMISE OH GEE PEACHY KEEN then to OH MY GOODNESS I THINK THERE'S TROUBLE AFOOT! then finally the conclusion, YAY TARZAN OR JANE SAVED THE DAAAAY LETS GO BACK AND LET THEM DANCE IN THE MOONLIGHT WHILE WE ALL MAKE MUSIC USING COCONUT AND BANANA INSTRUMENTS.

just- why did this one survive and not TMNT? Or PR? Hell I'd even have taken Spirit.

don't get me wrong, I love the original Tarzan, I just wish I'd stopped there and picked up Fantasia or something. :c

That movie was terrible! I couldn't even sit through it, I think I got into some deep philisophical discussion in the middle of the movie. Then all of the sudden a blind chick is running through the forest and runs into a park ranger. It was at that moment when I was like WTF? Isn't this movie in the 1900s?

fu.png 111189.gif

Night Shyamalan love to put twists on his movies, but I think that after the movie Signs, his carrer started to go downhill. His movies started to lose that interesting mix of scy fi and supernatural we had on umbreakable, the sixty sense and Signs (Signs was a master piece for me, scaryed the hell out of me when I first watched, lol) and then the acting and pacing got really boring and predictable, without saying that ending of his movies ended up with some sort of let down. I wish he could come back to his roots. sad.gif

Shyamalan has jacked some of his movie ideas from other works. IIRC Sixth Sense was ~~~~inspired~~~~ from an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark. Also The Villages' story and twist ending closely resembles a book called Running Out of Time. I understand that most stories aren't original nowadays, but the two aforementioned original pieces of work are. If they could do it, Shyamalan can try too.

Yeah definately. Shyamalan had a masterpiece of a movie handed to him on a silver platter and he botched it by breaking the cardinal rule.

if it aint broke, dont fix it.

all he needed to do was follow the source material and BAM instant hit with built in audience.
