I will start this off by trying to find an official correct re-translation of the 2010 Jump Festa Interview.

You know they warned me not to make double posts you can put it all in one post by using the edit button. But anyway I'm with you on this one we need translators who play fair and are not letting their fandom brainwash them. wink.gif

I can work with ungrammatical literal translations from Japanese (not babelfish garbage, although I can work with that, but not as well, because it's a mess). I can translate from the Japanese but with only knowing 100 kanji really well (and semi know around 100-150 more) you wouldn't want to wait how long it would take me! But I can do what the translators at Viz, etc... do, take a literal ungrammatical translation from a Japanese translator with basic knowledge of the Naruto manga (character names, country names, jutsu names) and clean it up pretty quickly. (Knowing what synonym fits best, etc... both Japanese and English are synonym rich languages, English even more so than Japanese. It's knowing what one fits best that is often the hardest part of the job.)
True
1) No caps lock in the title

2) You want translators to give a non biased review on pairings on a NARUSAKU site? Don't you think when others see the original translators already have a preferred pairing, they won't be called biased themselves? Your best bet on pairing situations are yaoi fans who don't hate Sakura/Hinata.

3) Or you know just take the manga for what it is and just go along with that?

True, I believe this is for our benefit not the web in general. It's to give us a translation that is not automatically biased against narusaku- something that has become infamously obvious on certain other Naruto fan sites. I'm sure not many people here are going to give a rip if those other sites call the translations we have are biased, we'll know we have the real deal, that's all that matters.

I apologize for bringing in US politics, but this is to combat the "Fox News" effect. The problem isn't that
they are biased in which side they agree with (so are a bunch of other news channels). They are
notorious for not even stating that another side exists. So its not surprising when their viewers have
certain world views, when they aren't even aware of an opposing view.

I'm just bringing this up, because when anti-NS forces use a scene or quote, it would be nice to know
whether the translation could be ambiguous. I appreciate posts by ciardha and others, who point out
when translations can have more than one interpretation. Especially when it involves like/love/ danarusakunp3.gif .

smile.gif If you can get Innera to do it, I'd like to bounce mine off of hers, her Japanese vocabulary knowledge is signifigantly larger than mine- I'm pretty sure- so she could get one out a lot faster than me, but then I can take a look over hers and the Japanese original and point out where synonyms would give a different feel and make my suggestion on what one fits best. (I'm most comfortable doing that kind of translation work, that's where my skill is.)

Basically. There is nothing you can do to prevent them from saying that, so there isn't any reason to worry about it. If the translator has a pairing or character preference that is even remotely relevant to the content translation, the accusation will be made by somebody, unless someone on "their side" can confirm it's accuracy.

It's the nature of pairing wars.

I can second the motion that this is a CRITICALLY important part of the translation process. My late father used to provide essentially the same amount of service working with an (then Serbo-)Croat ex-patriot named Antun "Tony" Nizeteo (diacritical marks on his name omitted) to translate Croation Poetry back throughout the 80s and into the early 90s. Tony would provide the literal ungrammatical translation, my father would clean it up. It could take weeks, or even months, to finish a book full of such poetry. (a lot of what they did together was published in the Journal of Croation Studies, which I believe is a now-defunct publication, but may be archived in some academic libraries, still)

Then again, that was poetry, and Naruto would be a lot less intensive in terms of idiomatic translations than poetry.
naruto-z
Well everything is set for the first trial translation. we've got a few people who say they want to give it a try....and i've got the best japanese version of the article on the interview (japanese).

If it is, you got the wrong report. In his actual sentence at Jump Festa he doesn't say that. Someone tried to pull a fast one on you. At Jump Fest the sasunaru shipper who gave the least biased report states that Kishimoto didn't say anything about Sakura still being in love with Sasuke. Try to find the non screwed around with report. The correct translation of that part was "Naruto is close (meaning to Sakura's heart) but Sakura still.... (Kishimoto trails off, no words) Sasuke." Please find the report that has the sentence like that, or any translation efforts are useless becuase you got the sasusaku/naruhina shipper distorted report.

If you look at the manga the accurate interpretation is, Naruto is close (to Sakura's heart -meaning she loves him very much) but she (still has some feelings for) Sasuke.

Apparently sasusaku/naruhina shipper who knew basic Japanese made a fake version, inserting some Japanese words that made it look like Kishimoto was saying Sakura was still very much in love with Sasuke. Little creeps, the sentence structure isn't correct grammatical Japanese either, it's how an English speaker who knows a bit of basic Japanese but doesn't have sentence structure knowledge would write Japanese, there's no article or subject markers for a big red flag. The correct one does not have the sentence: "Sakura yappari Sasuke ga daisuki mitai" The correct one with the Sasuke related sentence part should look something like: "kara...Sasuke" That's it about Sasuke in connection to Sakura that Kishimoto said at Jump Fest 2009. If it has anything else you've got a fake.

Awesome ciardha you have done it again a_thumbs.gif. I was actually laughing when one N/H fan told me that the part where Kishi says that Naruto is close she actually told me that Kishi was referring to Sakura's location saying that Naruto is close to Sakura's location *face palm* sweatdrop.gif that completely doesn't make any sense because he was talking about Sakura in the matters of the heart not about any location. Obviously if you tell a N/H and S/S fans that the interview is fake they won't believe it since they will think were the ones lying making up things. Not to mention that its too late to do anything about the interview since everyone by now has copied the N/H S/S version of that interview.

I really wish you'd stop claiming that it was a fake script. Especially calling people creeps.

First of all, that wasn't supposed to be a script, it was someone who was in attendance posting a *summary*. It was also passed around 2chan before posted at NF, and I doubt a non-Japanese speaker could have fulled the Japanese if it was incorrect Japanese. Which it wasn't. The sentence is "サクラはやっぱりサスケが好きみたい". It is grammatically correct (optional subject marker is ha, object marker is ga). A second summary had, "サクラやはりサスケが好き的な発言", which is also grammatically correct (object marker ga) and a more complicated grammatical structure than someone would be able to guess. You have no basis to claim that it was fake version made up by someone not even in Japan when multiple summaries all say the same thing and it's confirmed in the interview itself. Which leads me to...

Second, in the full script you are correct in that Kishi doesn't use the word "love" but drops it out of his sentence. Which is common to do in Japanese when the word being dropped is obvious and can be inferred. The question was what are Sakura's feelings for Sasuke so the context was already established so even though Kishi doesn't fill in the verb, yes he was saying that Sakura still has feelings for Sasuke without having to actually say the word [in Japanese]. And summaries from multiple Japanese came away with that impression.

I think you need to stop claiming that people are posting fake spoilers and please stop claiming translations are wrong because most of the time it is you who are incorrect. I've seen you do this multiple times now and I have a degree (minor) in the language and I'm asking you to stop spreading false accusations. It's an insult to people who can and do these translations for everyone.

Edit: Also, "close" (chikai) is close physical proximity; in other words, 'near'. Emotionally/intimately close is a different word in Japanese.

While I see people want to make actual translation for the manga, but please, do not bash or give false intentions to other pairing/fandom/translators, whatever... the rules still apply here.

Keep this up and I will close this thread and we will leave the work alone to the translators at the other forums whom already taking their time to translate the series in the language we speak/read.

Wow, didn't know I had a hostile forum stalker. Sorry, you messed up yet again in your attempt to smear me. I did not say it was a script. I stated, if they got a copy of the Jump Festa 2009 Kishimoto interview with that sentence structure it was fake, and it was proven to be fake, kiddo on Narutofan no less. So, please don't try to stir up a flamewar, none of us are interested. now don't get too excited because she is only doing this part time with important needed translations and we are not sure how long it may take her to reach us....so don't just try to wait on her to hand you the translations. for now, we're all going to still try to do what we can do by ourselves. then later on compare with innera. we also be needing some english clean up crew as she has stated her english is not perfect. but other than that.....it's all good news!!!!!!! biggrin.gif
kawarimi
^ I'll find the full script and post it for you.

EDIT: Link to full script

QUOTE (ciardha @ Jan 15 2010, 03:51 PM) *
Wow, didn't know I had a hostile forum stalker. Sorry, you messed up yet again in your attempt to smear me. I did not say it was a script. I stated, if they got a copy of the Jump Festa 2009 Kishimoto interview with that sentence structure it was fake, and it was proven to be fake, kiddo on Narutofan no less. So, please don't try to stir up a flamewar, none of us are interested. And I pointed out correctly that sentence fragment was ungrammatical in Japanese. rolleyes.gif And sorry again, there are people who are English speakers with basic Japanese who post fake Naruto stuff all the time. There are also Japanese people who post fake Naruto stuff all the time. And yes, I think people like that are little creeps.

The line is exactly what was written in one of the summaries here ("General Overview" spoiler). It didn't come from a fake inserted line into the script. It was a summary done in Japan which isn't contradicted in the actual script which I explained in my previous post.

Now, if you care to actually explain why you continue to think the script doesn't say Sakura still has feelings for Sasuke, I'd like to see you prove me wrong. But instead, you simply derail the subject and provide no support or evidence as you repeatedly do when I confront you on your false accusations that a translation is wrong. I don't attack you personally, I don't dish out insults, but I do show you where you are incorrect in your attempts to translate (which you already admitted to not being very skilled at on the first page of this thread). Try actually backing your claim instead of throwing out insults (hostile stalker) and a bunch of unsupported nothing.

I don't remember it being proven fake on NF unless that happened weeks after the final script even came out. Please provide the post where there was a consensus by reliable posters that the summary was fake. On the contrary, this is what was posted by Sho with the summary and translation: "@Hexa, the same type of info was posted on the Sasuke thread in 2ch. (the Sasuke/Taka relevant parts only of course) presumably by a different person, so I'm thinking it's legit. Everyone there thinks so." Hexa is one of the most reliable people on NF for weeding out the fake spoilers. She would have contested and removed it if it were fake. You didn't even remember where the line came from so I don't know why you're accusing me of 'messing up' when I'm the one who can post back up for everything I type.

Finally, please explain how it is ungrammatical Japanese. This was your claim:

QUOTE (ciardha @ Jan 15 2010, 11:20 AM) *

Here's the line one more time: サクラはやっぱりサスケが好きみたい

The subject and object markers are there. There is nothing wrong with the grammar in this sentence. The Japanese on 2ch would have noticed. Sho who is a known translator on NF translated it would have noticed. I'm looking at it and there is nothing missing/incorrect in the sentence structure. If you're going to claim that it is wrong and fake, you better have actual, credible support. But it is correct, so you can't have anything of the sort.

So I repeat, stop making false accusations against others because while you may think you are correcting them, it is you who are not correct in your 'translations'.

Edit #2: By the way, despite your accusation that I'm hostile, I actually have no desire to bicker with you, so I'm not going to reply to you if you're just going to continue with insults and unsupported (false) claims.

Okay everyone, can we PLEASE stop the fighting here? As Derock stated a little while ago, while it's great that people want to do translations, if we cannot go about this without the not-so-friendly comments, this thread WILL be closed. This includes bashing other fans, translators, fandoms, characters, etc. Rules are rules.

I don't want to do close the thread, and I'm pretty sure none of the other mods or admins want to either. However, if the bashing continues, then we'll close it down.

Thank you.

Okay, uh everyone...please keep your comments on the low down because any bashing of others well eventually lead to a closing of this thread as stated below. so please stop if you guys still want to actually work on getting real translations!

and i really hope you will not have to close this thread. we're not trying to bash others, we're just confused over just which is real or not and some of us just get annoyed/confused sometimes i guess. but please don't close this thread since we are working so hard to make it work.\

i looked around several places for the fullest japanese interview since i can't really understand japanese that well i can't really tell which one's real or not. plus, i looked around in multiple sources and they are all very much alike. it's very hard to find the actual copy of the interview. i'll need more help in finding it. so if you guys would all like to help with this, we'll be able to find it faster and on our way to translating! a_thumbs.gif

AND LAST BUT DEFINITELY NOT LEAST I DO HAVE SOME NEWS FOR YOU ALL (GOOD NEWS)!!!!!!

Awesome man thanks I will do my best too even if its a little hard to do everyone has the same script but I do believe it is fake translated by N/H and S/S shippers. If the manga translators messed up the translations in the manga when it comes to pairings then they can do the same thing with the Kishi interview. smile.gif

Again you distort, since you don't look at what I actually posted, but instead make up things or make distortions, I can only conclude that you are a hostile forum stalker. The "summary" where the person added in the "very much in love with" was proven false on NF by a narusasu shipper who doesn't even like Sakura. If you actually read my post you'd note that was what I was commenting on, being able to tell it was a fake, that sentence a person posted from the "interview" was ungrammatical in Japanese and I knew that particular "summary" had been a proven falsification.

I can also only express a combination of amusement and exasperation that I wrote in my interpretation of that sentence about Sakura's feelings about Sasuke- exactly the same thing you did above. I pointed out what the sentence part was known to actually be from the interview, wrote the correct translation and in parenthesis showed what would agree best with what Kishimoto has written in the manga. rolleyes.gif

Instead of stalking my posts and making up stuff about me- which is a waste of time, since I've been quite honest about my skill level and opinions, and it just annoys everyone else here- Since you say you have a minor in the language why don't you try your hand at doing translations instead of this pointless stalking. No one wants to hear negative attacks on another forum member, that's not what we are here for. The whole point of this thread was people here are sick and tired of the wrong way anything to do with narusaku or Sakura gets translated by others. We are doing our own.

If you are happy with NF fan translations then I think you've missed the boat on this thread. If you feel personally affronted that some people don't like how the translations have been done and we see the bias, sorry but not sorry. We are only doing this for our benefit. The fanslations have become unreliable. Even Viz's official translations are better now.

Whoa the heat in this thread is really rising come on everyone let's get along before the forum closes the thread we don't want that. mellow.gif

Alright people, this will be the final warning before the thread is closed. This is the third time on this page alone that a moderator has warned you to cool down, and if we see any of you go out of line, or we receive ONE more complaint on this thread, the people responsible will get an official warning and the thread will be closed. I'm sure naruto-z would like to keep the thread open, so stop it right now! That goes to you Ciardha, as well as kawarimi. If you guys can't get along, then take your anger somewhere it won't bother the rest of the members.

Thank you!
True
Enough is enough. Ciardha, you have been officially warned for continuously attacking another member who has been nothing but polite towards you and responded in a logical and courteous manner.

kawarimi, I apologize for the inconvenience you've had to go through when you've made only logical and coherent responses.
catsi563
Sorry but im not standing still for this.

With all due respect that was out of line true Ciardha is not the one who attacked anyone. Kawarimi started this mess and Ciardha may be pushing the issue forward but she certianly was not on the offencive.

As to being rude I find Kawarimis post ruder and with a greater level of innaprropriate attitude then Ciardhas have been. S/he has neither been polite nor courteous irregardless of how logical her post was.

quite frankly Kawarimi has no basis for her posts as she is not volunteering for the job thats been asked by others to be done here. if s/he has nothing productive to add she should simply not post instead of assulting and Ciardha like s/hes done.

edit: to lighten the tone a bit im not a fan of ganging up on someone which has been done here
Derock
Don't care who start the situation or pointing fingers on who done it...

Just. Drop. IT!

If the situation comes up once more, thread will be closed. End of story. Move on.

I agree Catsi, And frankly by the sounds of it both Kawarimi and Ciardha are the most knowledgeable on the Japanese language. We should try to get them to put aside their differences instead of having in fighting and finger pointing.

I understand that the mods are trying to keep the peace, but to be fair a public warning to both of them and perhaps a private mediation by a admin might prove more fruitful in this case. We could really use both of them in translating any script/ questionable material.

Honestly isn't this a better offer than a hard handed approach?
Sakura Blossoms
Okay...back on topic now. Next person to continue this argument the thread closes, and will not be re-opened until it's deemed that people can have civilized conversations. If those involved in this issue still have something to say they will do it by contacting Administration or a Moderator. End of discussion.
naruto-z
so, uhhh for now....our biggest goal is to find a proper copy of the interview!!!! right now any good copy will work, just the longest one we can find would be best for now you guys.
no questions asked and no debates over this!

p.s. i am from now on taking on a bigger control over this thread (if it's okay with you admins) to maintain peace

Yes this is exactly what we need no more bias translations by other fandom shippers thank you! biggrin.gif

Okay! I've got another version of the interview up now....it is the one that kawarimi offered. I'm just trying to post as many versions up as i can to see different perspectives. You don't have to agree w/ it.
On the site, the person who posted this interview does claim that it was...
QUOTE
I did however find a post by a 3rd person who said he went to the Festa. His account pretty much confirmed the other two, but the difference is that it seems he either wrote down all the questions/answers, or he recorded it because he has everything word for word unlike the others.
Anyhow, let's keep working and see if we can get these translated.
Uzumakikage
I would post spoilers on this site when they come out early on 2ch if their was a translator available at the time.
Vyse
As long as you support a pairing, there's no such thing as an unbiased translator, so I don't really believe the banner for this "translating group" if you want to call it that. Remember that we are a fanbased forum for a Naruto Pairing, and thus will not receive any credibility as "unbiased" in the Naruto fandom no matter how much you wish you will. I'm fine with the translations already used by the major scanlators, and even if they would be biased (which I'm not convinced they are), I still refuse to believe they would twist things consciously to promote their pairing. Thinking otherwise makes you biased!
pinkheartsyellowstars
..^ buy Vyse, There are major things that needs to clarify, for future interviews or translations of script of the recent chapter happy.gif
...example Kishi never said Sakura still loves Sasuke, but in the trans, it was added.
A NaruSasu fan confirmed this, so i think it is not biased.
