When was she relevant to the plot?

In the original story? never

 

her three major plot points were

 

the lovable loser speech

the eyes to confirm Orochimaru in kabuto

and the confession before pain

 

thats it

 

and there isnt a single one that renders her relevant to the story. EVERY single one of those could have been done to the same or greater emotional effect by any of a host of characters more relevant to the plot
