I am particularly fond of Rule #42 - Always carry a towel. Then again, I'm also a Douglas Adams fan. Another fun announcement, Nick!

In Topic: Character Deaths?

i'm just wondering, but what do you guys think of character deaths?
in regards to fanfiction, although i find them hard to write, they can really be useful in setting a future event, a stimulant for change, or even ending a story or completing a cycle. also, deaths can be great stages for literary devices in regards to general writing in itself.
just wondering if others had the same opinions.

In regards to killing a character in fan fiction, I'm all for it so long as it's done with thought and skill. I mean, anyone can write a hefty body count, but it takes some planning and forethought to actually give gravitas to someone's death. Not to mention how that death affects everyone who was involved in that person's life. Writers can and will kill whoever they want, but the trick is to have meaning to it; be it for pathos, for furthering the plot, or for whatever. Besides, sometimes it's really fun to write a death scene.

And for everyone wishing for Sasuke's death, consider how lacking the story would be. Who's going to challenge Naruto or share that bond of friendship? Who else understands that pain of loneliness? Hell, who's going to be as impressive to defeat other than Sasuke? Heroes need obstacles to demonstrate their heroism after all, and while Sasuke's not exactly a villain, he's a very entertaining obstacle for Naruto.

Besides, sometimes you need a character people like to hate, right? wink.gif
