Recently, I've learned that there is some confusion among non- NaruSaku fans about what our name is about. So I've tried to put together a quick post to explain it.

QUOTE
About the Name

Why Heaven & Earth?
The name refers to Iruka's description of Naruto and Sakura's strengths and weaknesses as shinobi during the chuunin exam. While both of them are excellent shinobi, those strengths and weaknesses still continue throughout part two to some extent. Naruto's biggest strengths include his stamina and chakra reserves. Sakura's biggest strengths include her chakra control which has helped her become an excellent medic nin and is even the basis for her smashy no jutsu. She has been referred to as being a genjutsu type (and hopefully, we'll get to see her do something besides dispel one someday) while dispelling a genjutsu is about the best that Naruto can hope for. So their skills complement each other.

That is not the reason for the name.

Their ninja abilities aren't particularly relevant to whether or not they should be romantically involved. Their personalities are much more important.

As illustrated in Iruka's example, Heaven and Earth are complementary elements. In a broader vein, the personalities of Naruto and Sakura are also complementary. While they share a lot of personality traits, they have opposite approaches in some areas. Since neither is right or wrong for all situations, they can also support each other as needed while their similarities allow them to appreciate the other's position. It also helps them learn from each other.

For instance, Naruto is usually rash while Sakura tends to be cautious. (However, she was very Naruto-like in her fight against Sasori.) Sakura is diplomatic while Naruto .... um, relies on persuasion in other ways.

The symbolism is appealing on another level. While the above examples simply demonstrate them as complementary, each of them are literally the other's Heaven and Earth. Both of them help the other rise above themselves and be more than they previously thought that they could be. And both of them are the rock to support the other when the going gets tough or they need encouragement. Heaven and Earth.

Iruka's description of them as Heaven and Earth is merely a bonus since it's a direct reference to them in the manga and perhaps foreshadowing.

So what do you think? Did I miss anything?

What does our name mean to you?

Stupid typo.

Sounds good to me. Though when you mentioned 'while Naruto ... um, relies on persuasion in other ways.' I TOTALLY saw him grinning and doing a series of pelvic thrusts, only to have Sakura come up behind him and bash him upside the head.

It also makes me think of Heaven and Earth bridge, where the most epic narusaku moment so far occurred. danarusakunp3.gif
Of course this site is older than that chapter of the story but I think it is significant that Kishi chose "heaven and earth" as the name of that bridge for the same symbology discussed above.

When I first found this site, I thought that the name was refering to the Heaven and Earth bridge. My friend was trying to get me interested in the anime (and Naruto in general) and the second episode he showed me was the battle between 4 tails Naruto and Orochimaru (the first being the battle at VotE). Naturally, I was hooked and I started watching from the beginning of Shippuden not knowing any better. Well of course, through out the Shippuden episodes I was thinking that Naruto and Sakura really care for each other. Then the episode after the 4 tails fight came and that sold me on the pairing. I was hunting left and right for fanfiction stories and was eventually led to this wonderful site biggrin.gif . I thought to myself that the site name was very fitting under the context of those episodes that hooked me on NaruSaku.

I then watched all of the part one Naruto anime episodes and realized that there was a more fitting reference with the Iruka speach about Heaven and Earth. However, reading the complete explanation to the name of the site, I cannot but help and absolutely agree on the sentiments expressed.

I think of the Heaven Scroll and the Earth Scroll (Chunin exams part 2). Both must be together in order to complete the task.

Yeah, I understand all of this about the name, and how it shows that symbolically they fit well together. But have we ever used it as a debate arguement?

Good post, Nick. biggrin.gif

It was good to be reminded of the meaning behind H&E. It's also a good name for a fansite, if I may say so. XD H&E also reminds me of that thing I most love about NaruSaku - the way they interact.

That reminds me, it's been so long since we had a proper interaction between Naruto and Sakura in the manga. C'mon, Kishi, you'd better have one coming after the current fight (no spoilers)... tongue.gif

Great post, hopefully we NaruSaku-ers have always felt this. And several people have already mentioned the bridge where Sakura's feelings become apparent as well. Beautiful symbolism of their perfection for each other.

The person you debate against using this argument will say, "LOL Too bad that symbol was used to describe what makes the perfect Chuunin. :zaru" Which is, in fact, very true.

The Heaven and Earth metaphor isn't really something all that reliable as an argument in debate since only NS fans seem to really grasp the concept on why it foreshadows their potential as a couple.

Well, really, the name could be looked at in any way you like, as long as it gets the dudes to understand just why the pairing is being supported. There doesn't have to be a definite reason, tbh. But damn, that explanation by Nick was pretty detailed.

It actually got me thinking, why would people question the meaning of Heaven and Earth? It's pretty straightforward to me really. Hm...

Yeah, I didn't really think that it was a mystery why we'd chosen the name or anything, but I guess what is obvious to the fandom isn't so obvious to people outside of that same fandom.

Seriously, first time I got to this place I didn't realize about Iruka's description at all. And I had to crank up my brain some more to correlate the name and NaruSaku, made rounds to any chinese myth but got none enlightenment, desk-head-bashing ensued (not), then I reread the chapter about the bridge, got a little bit giddy because it's so fitted soon after.

Now I just read Nick's explanation.

And Heaven & Earth can't be more any perfect.
