So reading through the thread about ranking basically everyone within Naruto's age range, the Konoha 12, I noticed how low Tenten was ranked a lot.

 

It made me realize just how much potential has been wasted on the character. Not only in terms to her being on a team with two other characters who have had quite a bit of screen time and their own drama, but also because of what kind of skills she could display. It would have been great to see Tenten be an expert who could fight with any and all weapons .

 

 

I also remember her mentioning that she wanted to strive to be like Tsunade when she got older, I think it would have been interesting to see a rivalry develop with Sakura maybe.

 

A bit of a shame, wouldn't you say?

She does have the potential and sadly she was casted out by the rest, even Hinata. She could've been an awesome character. Hell, she would been fine back at Part 1 if she was included in the Sasuke Retrieval team instead of being all guys besides Naruto. Shino was another one.

 

Though her character and development was through fillers and Lee's spin-off, it's really a shame that Kishimoto didn't give her a chance to shine brightly (much of that went towards Shikamaru, Hinata -in majority of the fans' eyes-, and Sasuke).

I really want Tenten to show up more sometimes in every chapter, but she hardly shows up any. :/

I agree. Tenten is the most sidelined character in the series, I sometimes forget who she even is.  And I find this very unfair of Kishi. Tenten could've had a great story arc for herself throughout the series. Maybe show her growth from only using ninja tools to becoming stronger.

 

Her and Shino are so very underdeveloped ...

I seem to recall, researching possible Japanese names, learning that Tenten's name was a pun for something like "nothing" or "insignificant."  I somehow doubt she was ever intended to exploit that potential, and I always thought her "special techniques" (weapons focus) was sort of a "well, I've figured out the base techniques for everyone else.  What do I give this person whose job is just to fill out the roster?  Oh, I guess you can't go wrong with weapons."

 

Shino, on the other hand... geez, I always thought he was secretly the strongest of the Rookie 9+3 in Part 1 (especially after his role in the Sand-Sound war).  The introduction of more of his clan (and de-mystifying of his clan's abilities) has sort of diminished his aura, in my mind, and his few significant appearances make him look even less powerful.  (Still, I'd bet anything he would have crushed Sasuke during the Chuunin Exams)

I do like Tenten in the Rock Lee series, but to be fair the reason why she is more developed in that series is because the writers/animators had more freedom of what to do with the character in the show. She was quite literally blank slate for the writers/animators to fill in, actually giving her personality and even expanding on her friendship with Lee (with possibly romantic innuendo in the series, though they are not canon with the main series so wouldn't matter if those implications are suppose to be taken serious or not).

 

But outside of that I never thought Tenten had any potential to exploit. She always felt like the token girl, and her abilities always felt generic and were never expanded upon. Yet because of the Rock Lee show, I actually like her a lot more of the other Konoha 9 characters. I don't really care for the majority of the characters, and I often feel like they get sidelined to much for me to actually take notice of what they are doing (the exception being Shikimaru). I never felt like the majority of characters didn't anything important past part 1, and in my opinion, most of those characters turn out to be wasted potential.

Tenten is just one example of wasted potential in the series. Another example is Shino. Built up in the Chuunin Exams and Sand Invasion, only to be completely forgotten later on.

Out of the characters that have 0 development, Shino is my favorite because of the breif buildup he got.

Kishimoto didn't create a conflict with her character. He could've said "She's more than just a tomboy throwing metal objects."

 

At least Ino, Hinata and Sakura has something to overcome.

It IS SAD.   I like TenTen and want to see her Kick ass like the rest of the members. What she needs is a super, special, awesome weapon that can give some real UMPH. And could knock hell around.

Tenten's tragic backstory is that she doesn't have a family name.  (I mean, isn't she the only one of the 9+3 AND their teachers AND the Hokage AND that random guy on the street mentioned only in the data books that doesn't have a last name?  Well, Orochimaru, too, I suppose...

I have to agree with this. Kishi never created any notable personality characteristics or facets in Tenten's life to help with individualizing her. She appears to be nothing more than a means to adhering to the staple of one female character for every two males on the three-man squads. This was notable all the way back during the preliminary matches of the Chunin Exams when the only fight that was not depicted in the manga was Tenten's. There just wasn't much to use for a personal story or conflict revolving around her character.

This was why I mentioned her maybe having a sort of rivalry with Sakura since she wanted to be like or surpass Tsunade when she got older in Part 1. It's a stretch maybe but, just a thought.
