Just had to get my hot air out like SB did.

Now that SOPA has been 'killed' by the Senate I thought that was more relevant.

Because I can continue posting random clips again.

hmm- is SOPA really dead though? they've basically said- uh we'll lie down for now- fix some stuff up and throw it back into congress again later.

>.>- seriously its not funny anymore-

For those who are interested here it the actual indictment against Megaupload. Just so you know before you start reading, it's long (72 pages).

Yeah, I'm not sure if that is something Federal law requires or something that is done in major federal cases, but most state level indictments aren't remotely close that long and are usually on a few pages that simply state the charges and basic info.

One threat, temporarily put down, another rises.....

Apparently, there's this European bill called ACTA that's been in the works and hidden since 2006.

I don't know the specifics behind it, but instead of senators and representatives, entire countries are rallying behind it.

Here's my source: http://www.destructoid.com/move-over-sopa-...d--220063.phtml

Would be nice if others post more info other than wikipedia.

In other news, the OPEN act also slipped through during the blackout. While it seems less stringent, I still have no idea how much it'll impact the internet compared to SOPA/PIPA.

We should take into consideration that posting copyright material without permission is wrong. Not only that it is outright theft.

Then again, shutting down entire websites is too drastic...let us deal with pirates the way they used to deal with pirates. Pass a bill of Mark and Reprisal to give the authorization to hunt down and capture pirates even on foreign land.

Sounds like it may be true, it's an action that FileSonic have taken themselves in a bid to head off similar legal action:

FileSonic halts file sharing service

FileServe has also taken the same action:

FileServe shutters

The Megaupload shutdown has shaken all those other filesharing sites to the core. Who needs SOPA/PIPA when law agencies can already take this kind of action?

Ah, yes, the bitter irony: form the European Union, and years later it produces a bill to limit everyone's Internet rights.

QUOTE (Insight on Knowledge and Immortality)
"With knowledge, comes peace. With peace, comes love. With love, comes health. With all of knowledge combined, we gain insight. With insight, we will gain the ultimate immortality, even after we die. We will be echoes in history, we just need to shout loud enough, but through knowledge. History respects War and Genocide, but History Embraces Peace and Knowledge. Immortality of the physical sense brings torture after torture. You will never be able to love one person forever. You will always lose them to the tests of time, leaving you to suffer and wilt in your own skin. Not being able to die, you will slowly erode as your body breaks down. You will slowly sink into madness, and in the end, you will be nothing. Immortality is nothing."

Lol, I posted something about ACTA a week ago. Mine was lacking in info though.

The only notable facts I had were that entire countries are rallying for it and that it's apparently been in the works since 2006.

No one in this thread says what it does or explains why it would be so awful. Does any where know what the law actually does?I wasn't terribly satisfied with the petitions link as it contained only their personal summary without a whole lot of the laws actual text.

It's like the megalupload case. I posted the indictment so people could see what they are actually accused of doing before deciding the whole thing was unjust.

Does anyone have the actual contents of the law?

Megaupload was actually under the government's juristiction.

If this Gizmodo link is helpful let me know:

http://gizmodo.com/5877000/what-is-sopa

here's an opinion column from computer world that sounded like the exact same question you're asking.

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/922...mp;pageNumber=1

Acta is here, hard to find.

http://mashable.com/2012/01/27/acta/

ACTA is worse because it crosses international juristiction in the form of a trade agreement.

Thank you.

Yeah, it is. Megaupload had some of its files stored on a server in Virginia and that is how they are claiming jurisdiction. I think is part of what is scaring people like File Sonic. If this works then people who run those sites wouldn't have to step foot in the US to be nailed by US authorties.

The government is also attempting to argue that Megaupload has an active duty to police the content that is placed on it's site. It is not the only theory being used (they are accused of personally uploading/downloading infringing material). That part will be interesting to watch because if it works it'll scare alot more people like youtube and such as they won't be able to sit back and wait for claims to be made like they do now.

No one passed ANY of these bills yet... And sorry for not being here to tell everyone of ACTA beforehand, it seemed like I was withholding information...

Furthermore, the OPEN Act was the alternative to SOPA that I mentioned previously, but after doing some research it turns out that although it isn't as bad as it's siblings... It's still pretty nasty :/

I like how imprisoning dozens of people illegally, performing periodic assassinations on political dissidents, preforming genocide while ironically enough boasting about prosecuting past genocides doesn't raise any alarm bells at all, but NO MORE FREE, DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT? GRAB YOUR 'MACHINE GUNS', EVERYONE, IT'S TIME TO SHOOT EVERYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH US!

Sorry, I just find it silly of all the horse-blind's going on. To each their own silly cause, I guess.

I think the reason why people are so up in arms about it, is NOT due to the downloadable content, etc... It's due to how artists and fanfic authors or anyone that even comes close to infringing work already feels like it would suffocate their already flailing creativity rights...

That and genocide/loss of life has been so accustomed to in this modern day and age (I feel disgusted for even talking about it so neutrally...) that we no lnoger "care" about it (or at the very least, care about it as much as we used too...)

No matter how bad/good something is, it will always be compared to something else, and that will always downplay the importance of said event...

However, infringing on the internet is relatively new, that's why we are all "UP-IN-ARMS" about it... Sorry man, if you don't like the way world is you could always leave (tried to say that in the nicest way possible, and I realize that I have failed) sad.gif
