Cal, Oregon, you're on an advisory. Man Japan shut down, waves hit Hawaii, this thing is huge. US military mobilized. And I just saw the water take out Sendai's airport from earlier, and the gas plant. Power is shut down, oh man. Hawaii got 7 ft waves. Hopefully the waves won't be too big by the time they get to California. Crossing my fingers for our friends out west. |

Oregon and California waves are starting, Oregon's being hit at the moment. No estimates though.

Man, this is scary... an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 AND a tsunami... why on earth is one of the greatest places I wanted to go is one of the centers of disaster! DX
Poor Japan. Hawaii is getting hit as well with almost 7ft waves and now the western states at the Pacific may get them too... ![]() Fighting for one's worth! |

It's really bad, but could've been even worse if Japan wasn't extremely prepared for earthquakes. They're located on the Pacific ring of fire.
That said, a Japanese nuclear plant is reporting a coolant failure. This post has been edited by Insurrection: Mar 11 2011, 04:09 PM ![]() |

Gonna call my parents tonight, see how they're doing. Taiwan ain't far from Japan. Hope everything is good. Now this morning Japan had a problem with a nuclear power plant but I assume that was taken care of. That wirlpool that was created in the ocean from the quake looked crazy. ![]() |

That said, a Japanese nuclear plant is reporting a coolant failure. It doesn't look like that will be a huge problem. There aren't any radiation leaks like some had feared. Sounds like it's under control. QUOTE why on earth is one of the greatest places I wanted to go is one of the centers of disaster! Sounds like a bad aftershock. It's in a completely different part of the region, so they're calling it a new quake: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110311/ap_on_...n_earthquake_45 ![]() |

This news of earthquakes just keeps making me more afraid of my hometown for reasons I described before, as we're on the other side of the ring of fire and I'm hoping this trend won't go overseas. Hopefully the 2nd quake isn't too bad, but I'd be freaking out if I was there.

Hmm. Taiwan is unscathed apparently. Still gonna call to check in.
Last time I was back home, an earthquake about 80 km away from my place, we still felt it. I think it was a 6.9. Edit: will report in when I get a chance to call (parents are still sleeping) This post has been edited by Cloud: Mar 11 2011, 08:23 PM |

It's in a completely different part of the region, so they're calling it a new quake: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110311/ap_on_...n_earthquake_45 Plate Tectonic scientists have found that it's not unknown for a major quake on one fault to trigger a small quake on a nearby fault. (That makes people in my part of country really nervous. If the New Madrid has a big one, it will shake here, then could trigger one or more of the many fault lines in the south and lower midwest.) I wish I could contact my college classmate online- the one from Sendai. The only thing that makes me feel a bit better is the last I knew she lived nowhere near the coastline- unfortunately that was over 15 years ago... It's not like when the 7.2 earthquake happened around Kyoto back in 1995, I had three college friends who lived around the region then: 1 in Shiga, 1 in Nara, and 1 in Kyoto. We'd all just graduated a year and half before (they, like my Sendai friend, were exchange students at my local university) and I was able to write all three (snail mail) and heard back from them they were okay. I've lost the old addresses of all of them over the years, a friend from Chiba too, where that gas refinery went up in massive flames after the earthquake. I think I might see if I can find them on facebook or twitter. Wow the videos of the damage are intense. My heart goes out to the people of Japan.
We are lucky so far here in California, but with all the recent devestating quakes all over the world I have a feeling we are over due for our giant earthquake. ![]() ![]() |

For anyone that's interested, this article has several videos of the Tsunami that hit Japan.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theenvoy/201...ake-and-tsunami One of the videos is of an Uzumaki Whirlpool. You just can't describe how the waves come in and just toss cars around. It's a good thing Japan was well prepared for something like this. Their preparation has saved hundreds of thousands of lives. |

the death casualities are rising in an alarming rate, hundreds had been found dead so far. There are updates here: http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/03/11/live-...pan-earthquake/
Some autorities in Japan fear that the earthquakes might be so high that the tsunamis could wash nearly all the island ![]() |

Oh well, mother nature knows no wealth, knows no suffering. She struck one of the poorest countries in the world [Haiti] just last year killing hundreds of thousands, and now she strikes at one of the richest countries in the world.
