Ah but it is, if I wanted to had it customized to max. the 1700+ had it equipped with 2nd gen i7 turbo boost, 1Tb HD and all that jazz. but since its the kitty we're talking about, I had no reason to overkill it.

Heh. Well, not sure bout in US but here in OZ Lenovo is pretty dang cheap compared to others of the same specs so its pretty good deal as far as I'm concerned.

Okay, I'm having a SERIOUS issue occur on my desktop (posting from my laptop).

I'm getting a BSOD with "page_fault_in_nonpaged_area" listed as the cause after installing a new antivirus scanner and rebooting. Did some checking, and found that the issue can be caused by several things -- which, by process of elimination, I reduced down to the installation of the antivirus software. Okay, simple solution: Remove the antivirus software and try again, right? Except I cannot boot my computer up to the point that the antivirus software can be removed. I tried rebooting "from last functioning configuration" and get the BSOD mid-reboot. I tried rebooting in safe mode and get the BSOD before Windows loads. Tried "repair" feature from the Windows (XP service pack 2, in this case, although it had been updated to SP3 over time) disk, but it cannot complete set-up because the BSOD occurs prior to completion of boot-up. I CAN boot the computer in "recovery console" mode (which only allows me limited access to the computer, but nothing to XP itself, nor to the uninstallation component of the virus scanner), but that's utterly useless. Does anyone have any suggestions, here?

@desaix The best recommendation I can give is to switch to another OS entirely, I personally haven't tried this (and didn't need to since I have a complete back up of my system on best condition) last time I check, such virus only works on specific OS (and XP is primary target for viruses as far as I can tell). So my recommendation would be to switch straight to Win 7. Once you upgrade your OS to 7, try to access it again, if you're in luck, the virus won't work on it allowing you to access windows and you can then uninstall the damn program followed with complete clean up of your hard disk.

If that doesn't work though, Your next best bet would be to completely reinstall and reformat your hard disk. I know this might not be the answer you're looking for but from what you said up there, I can't think of anything else that you can do since to uninstall a program in xp, access to the OS is definitely needed which is something you can't have right now.

I used to have the same problem as you several times and tried pretty much everything I can think of but all of them are in vain since I would be lucky to even get pass the loading screen, much less into the desktop. Thats when I start using backup hard disks just in case such thing happened again, losing all my work in the hard disk ain't a picnic.

The problem isn't a virus, it's an anti-virus. Kaspersky, with CD installation. It's a known bug (caused by a software conflict), and there are tons of ways around it... if I can just get far enough into the system to fix it. If I could just get it up temporarily, I could fix the problem permanently. I don't suppose there's a way of running XP off of the disk to correct the effected software, is there? IF there isn't, well, I could just clean install Windows, and I'd probably even have most of my data recovered (though I'd have to deal with existing copies of, for example, Skyrim, which won't work because they've been wiped out of the registry)

I have a back-up hard disk. The problem is the things the back-up doesn't routinely back-up: namely, bookmarks, e-mails, that kind of thing. Years of e-mail, hundreds of bookmarks, heck, even tons of saved games would just be gone.

I'm currently attempting a second try at XP's repair system (something I read about in a tech support forum -- evidently, XP will fix "additional" things if you have a second go at it or something like that), and it's gone further than the previous try already. I hope to hell this works, because I should have been in bed four hours ago, and I'm not going to bed until things are working again.

hmm... funny, I use kaspersky too and never have that kind of problem before. not sure about xp repair fixing additional thing either, but if that is so then it would erase everything you have done since the time you install it so I don't think it will make any difference to you reinstalling everything anyway.

Did you already have another antivirus installed on your desktop anyway? some antivirus i think doesn't work well with each other (I use 2 but all of them works well quite ok.)

The Kaspersky problem isn't something "every" computer has, just us lucky few. *sigh* I'm not entirely clear on what the conflict is (something to do with artifacts left behind by older anti-virus\anti-malware scanners after their uninstall, I gather), but once the initial installation and first update are complete, and its run its first scan, the problem never comes up again.

Incidentally, the repair worked, and I seem to have saved everything (including my bookmarks and e-mail). However, my version of Windows has reverted to Service Pack 2, Windows Media Player to 8.0, and Internet Explorer reverted to version 6.0 as a consequence of the repair (Firefox et al are unaffected, but I have to keep an up-to-date working copy of IE for my job). It'll take me a few days to get everything back to normal, again, but as desperate as things seemed last night it looks like it'll all be working fairly normally by the weekend (and, incidentally, Kaspersky should be able to work fine, now -- the error has been bypassed, thanks to the Windows Repair Tool, and it shouldn't happen again).

Okay, here's one I can't figure out. I'm having internet issues. I have two computers (both PCs) running on a hardwired ethernet connection. I also have a wireless hotpoint (made using a wireless router), ALSO running on that same hardwired ethernet connection, through which several laptops and wireless devices connect to the internet.

Earlier today, the internet connection went partially down on both hardwired desktops. I can get e-mail in and out of both systems (using Microsoft Outlook or similar software), but any attempts to connect to the web have failed. I've tried multiple browsers (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera), rebooting the router, cablemodem, and both desktops, and more, but I still only get e-mail and not the web.

Here's the kicker -- my wireless devices (including the laptops and an Ipod, none of which are using 3\4G devices) are connecting smoothly, as if nothing is wrong, and I can use all the varieties of web browsers I have access to on those devices (including the Ipod's Safari browser, which often requires a stronger connection than the laptop to work) with no problem.

Usually, if there's a problem, it hits my wireless devices first (and keep in mine, the wireless is recieving its internet connection through that same hardwired ethernet connection and same router. So why aren't my desktops able to access the web, yet the laptops are?

(I'd give my computer details, here, but are they really needed considering the issue is happening across multiple computers in the network?)

Edit: Still not sure what the bug was, but it seems to have resolved itself... for now, at least. I'd still like suggestions, just so I can try and figure out what to do if this happens again.
