Bleach - 7/10
It's ok. The serious moments and action are outstanding, but the constant retarded humor kills it.

10/10 for Naruto, but I don't think this is the place be rating Naruto (since we all would do it, and this place would get old fast)

So I'll go with Bleach: about 8/10 because I'm only at the first 100 episodes still, probably 9.5/10 when I get the time to watch the other ones.

Steins Gate 10/10

I was planning to give it a 9 when it was finishing but the ending changed my mind. It may take a few episodes to get use to the characters like most animes but once you do, you'll get attached to them. The story is excellent and very well-written. Its very easy to go wrong with time-traveling stories but this show manage to create the development perfectly. This is a must watch for anime viewers. Definitely a contender for anime of the year.

Mirai Nikki 8/10

The series gets more and more interestiing with the plot twist. With the dark and psychological tone of the series, its comes off as great.

Hey everyone, it's been a long time since I've posted. Hope things are well with whomever reads these reviews. I've been busy with ... real world stuff. It's no excuse though for not being up to date on the latest animes as you'll be able to tell by the titles I'm listing below. I'm like... 3-4 years behind. tongue.gif

Clannad (fully watched)/Clannad:AS(part way through):9/10

Spoilers maybe... but at this point it's been out for a while right? --Click here to view--
Yes, I'm not afraid to say it. I'm a sucker for romance. And honestly, I was super resistant to this series at first mostly because I'm not a fan of this type of character design. It's kind of irksome when people who are suppose to be around 18 are drawn to look like 10-12 year olds, (partially because this is one of the things that gives anime a bad-rep) but I'm trying to push pass this bias to watch animes that are popular since... they're popular for a reason.

Animation: Other than the character design, this anime was well animated, tons of eye-candy (not the characters but everything else). Kudos to the background artists.

Story/Writing: At first I was torn on how to feel about the fantasy/visual aspect of it, not sure where they were going at first, but it started piecing itself quite well. All the clues that were given weren't bludgeoning nor spoon-fed. I was almost worried that this was going to turn into the 6th sense... but so far doesn't seem to be so. But I will say this. WHY IS THIS SO SAAAAAAAAAAAD! shamefulcry0js.gif shamefulcry0js.gif shamefulcry0js.gif I'm exited to finish the AS series. I hope it ends happily.... somehow. Otherwise, 111193.gif Loved the OVA side shipping (again, I know I'm late to the party): Definitely preferred the Toms getting (TomoyaXTomoyo) Yes I saw their non-canon get together episode and no I'm not going to read the manga dedicated to them because ... I just refuse shamefulcry0js.gif shamefulcry0js.gif shamefulcry0js.gif . Nope, in my mind they lived happily ever after in that OU. I prefered TomoyaXTomoyo or TomoyaXKyou over the canon-couple. But... I've blabbed enough about this.

Music: Really captured the fantasy/spiritual quality of the series. Similar in feel to the few visual novels I've played through, mostly piano with a single string or wind instrument, kind of synth-y in sound, all working to give it a simple/quaint slice of life feel floating in a free-fall daze surrounded by cherry blossom leaves, but it also is composed to give it that heavy swell in dramatic/emotional moments. I could have done without some of the more heavy synth-leads and pads but again, why is this show sooo saaaaad!? shamefulcry0js.gif

D-Gray Man Season 1/ part of season 2 7/10
not so spoilery? It's been out for some time now right? --Click here to view--
Animation: Animation is somewhat bland most of the time... Trying to read the manga side-by-side as a story/art comparison and the art in the manga is kind of has a sloppy feel. I say sloppy feel because it's not sloppy it's just the composition and the action the character's body can do is distorted and can be a bit much. Nothing wowing here actually.

Story/Writing: It's very complicated and having read a bit further in the manga than the series... it's almost going for broke in terms of how complicated Allen Walker's past and future is winding down to be. Also... they get beat up... a lot. I mean, you'd think such an old order would have come up with a better tactic for fighting a 2nd/3rd/4th level Akuma other than throwing everyone at it and hoping someone gets lucky. Allen also seems to get his butt handed to him a lot. When Fou and Mr. Bak were going to get killed by that level 3 akuma, I was thinking that if they died I would drop the series... I know villains aren't suppose to be easy to defeat and that the hero needs to meet with lose to gain strength sometimes... but it just seems like Allen, and the whole black order is seemingly incapable of defeating the akuma/Earl. It's almost like playing a video game where the henchmen are master level and the game creators have created a super-master level boss. Also... I read somewhere that Tyki doesn't get his just desserts. After everything he's done... really? Is he so interesting that people want to keep him around? Also... It doesn't seem like this anime/manga are going to have a happy ending. Although... I read somewhere that the anime ended at the end of season 2. Um... Also... why are we teased with shipping? It's kind of slapped in there in very vague and then frustrating ways. AllenXLenalee? If you're not going to go that way... don't put stuff in there. I know he calls her a sister... But ... people apparently have brother/sister complexes... so what does that mean? But I'm sure the shipping preferences for this show are mostly yaoi.

Music: Kaoru Wada... kind of tends to be very same-y. But across the shows I've seen, Inuyasha, Casshern, and now this... some of the musical motifs seem to be recycled from the other two shows. I find myself very distracted by this. I haven't looked at Kaoru's discography to see if he's composed other shows I've seen and haven't noticed him, so I don't know if like John Williams who's stuff tended to sound very samey towards the end because he had done a bajillion movies. Sometimes it's effective, mostly just filler noise, and distracting.

Rosario+Vampire, 1,2: 6/10, mostly because I read the manga first
Animation: Mostly Average, with the scenery being extremely plain and... what's with Inner-Moka's emergence having larger breasts than Outer-Moka?
Story/writing: Usual fun, ecchi faire. Somewhat follows the manga, kind of derails in parts, and the battle with Moka's dad... really? Guess they had to end it somehow. (Shipper preference: Inner-MokaXTsukune)
Music:Meh.

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood 8/10
Would've had more if more was in recent memory, but I read the manga after... so that's clearer in my head. Was fairely close in my recollection. Should I bother watching just FMA? I hear it strays because the mangaka didn't want fillers so they just decided to make their own series. Yay

Ship spoiler... if even that anymore --Click here to view--
YAY EdXWinry!

Full Metal Panic: 7/10 /Second Raid 8/10
Standard Tsunedere love interest/ Mecha show. Funny Tsunedere moments. Actually one of the most well-crafted intimate moments I've ever seen in an anime series, in FMP: Second Raid. It's the hair-cutting scene. I hear the light novels and continuation manga are darker... and currently in publication and the outcome doesn't look too bright for our two main protagonists. Nooooo!

1st manga series ending spoiler --Click here to view--
Why did the anime not have Kaname's kissing Sousuke on the cheek? WTH? I know they're more conservative on showing PDA but ... COME ON!

I'd ship either way and even though in the light novels it seems Kaname's the main love, I'd be fine if he went with Tesa to... although I heard she's a little more vindictive in the light novels than the anime.

Heroic Age 7/10
I'm torn on this... sometimes the music can bias me to like something and think a moment is greater than it actually is. Such is the case with the main theme of the show. The musical motif of that song is really great for the show... although listening to the whole track, it's disappointing towards the end as it doesn't evolve in to a new movement. Also, I don't know if this was just how they mixed the sound when they re-dubbed it but sometimes that them is a little too blaring for certain scenes.
I didn't quite understand everything about the trials of the Heroic tribe... and in the end... it kind of just felt like the golden tribe toyed with everyone. There was never any answer as to why they left in the first place and left everyone behind. And then made everyone have to fight... other than for pollinating the universe. But this could've been achieved by simple travel... not a giant all-out war with weapons provided to both sides... so... in the end. They were jerk faces... and I don't know why everyone wanted to be like them. The animation was actually consistent. Although the character designs were simplistic the lighting in the scenes was detailed.
Shipping spoiler if you care --Click here to view--
Um... AgeXDeianela... WTH? I guess... who knows. If someone is the last person of the opposite gender....maybe you would go for them even if you say not now. She doesn't say this to him. Just he's one of the few guys who can go near her without her powers going out of wack. He has the intelligence of a 10 year old... She's a princess who'll rule over the universe. I guess that makes sense. He's astute and keen on what others are feeling but... being able to help her with galaxy issues... probably not. Also as emotional as the ending is [NON-SHIP SPOILER WITHIN A SPOILER] Even though she has those responsibilities for the universe she just leaves with Age? ... She's the only one who knows how to open the portal on her side in the future... Basically the universe is screwed. I actually LOL and then LOL'ed when I realized why I was LOL'ing.

Watching these shows has me wondering something, a question to be posed in another thread at a later time. Sleepy timez nao.

Continuing my game of catch up.

Eureka Seven 8/10
Rarely with animes spanning over 26 episodes, is the artwork and animation consistent between the X amount of teams that switch off animating it in terms of quality. But here we have very consistent high-quality stuff.

You can never truly escape archetypes, just because people who have tried to do so have created new ones. But you really get a wide variety of characters that come to play, and maybe with the exception of two people, everyone comes into play and does something important.

The ending is fine although it only wraps up three storylines leaving out other important character resolutions: the solution of the main issue, a subplot romance, and then the main romance and while the third one is not too frustrating it's one that I don't quite get. Hopefully someone can explain it to me in a separate thread.

A complaint I do have is that the score is a little underwhelming.

I'd recommend watching the show. It's a mecha show that's more about the characters than flashy explosions although it has that too.

Eureka Seven: Good Night, Sleep Tight Young Lovers 3/10
This is set in an alternate universe and has no connection with the tv show other than using mostly the same characters (in different roles) and tons of re-used footage from the show and modified animation (using the body of a character or even a full sequence from the show but drawing a different face over some people:(). Only reason why it gets anything other than a zero is because someone was paid to slap together a script with different motivations for everyone to be dubbed over scenes from the show. Also, the female characters are weak, save-me-types versus their stronger parallels in the TV show. Weak, lame and a total disappointment. Don't waste your time watching this.

Xam'd 7/10
Called by many to be the spiritual successor to Eureka Seven, I believe it was made by the same team. If one saw Eureka Seven first, one might be inclided to call Xam'd too same-y. Minus the weapon-type, Xam'd - mutations, Eureka Seven - Mecha, all the components are essentially the same between the two. Between the two I actually feel that Xam'd is weaker, even though it has less episodes. There is a section in the middle where a main character leaves and has a "spiritual journey" where they find themselves, but whereas Eureka Seven has Renton, a flawed human character with demons to work out and is seen to grow, the character in Xam'd, Nakiami is presented as more the Kwai Chang Caine character who solves other people's issues while on her journey. In truth the actual protagonist Akiyuki also goes on a journey, but he's featured less prominently than Nakiami, and his comprises mostly of him having amnesia and staring out in a daze. Ending is shorter, but more complete in my opinion. I guess if you don't have time or for some reason can't find a means to watch Eureka Seven, this show is fine. But if I had to choose, it'd be E7 every time.

Voices of a Distant Star 8/10
I had heard about this when it was first released, but it drop under my radar. 10 years later, I finally watched it. The amazing thing about this, is that essentially, it was animated, colored, written, acted and directed by the same guy with only his wife doing an additional voice and a friend doing the music. It's only 30 minutes long, but it's a great first-time film about the bond and the communication between a girl who travels into space to fight a hostile alien species and a boy who has to remain on earth. Their primary source of communication is via text (I realize that that's somewhat silly since they have the technology to do warp-like speed jumps). As she and the fleet she's in is forced by enemies to go deeper and deeper into space it takes longer for the text messages to reach the boy. Really touching (bittersweet). Recommend watching it for inspiration on what you can do with desire, passion and will power in terms of creating art.

Bakemonogatari 8/10
Super erratic, self-aware but not distractingly so (in a way manages to make it part of the show's draw), and extremely interesting characters. I don't really like Yandere characters, but any scene with Hitagi and Araragi is electric... Because of the sense of danger she brings, and while he's aware, Araragi likes her so much that against his better judgement he lets his defenses down. Does anyone know if this is getting licensed in the states?

Nisemonogatari 8/10 Continuation of above, it's definitely getting more interesting with the introduction of Kaiki, one of the men responsible for Hitagi's tragic past and partially responsible for her messed up personality. Still too soon for me to say it's better than the original, but it doesn't miss a beat from the first season, although the scenery is uber stylized now. Excited to keep up with it.

How the hell are these two not here?

NISEMONOGATARI 10/10 TOTALLY exceeds the first season (Bakemonogatari) and the plotline is totally awesome. The first season is like more of a setup for the 2nd season's plot line to get much thicker and intense. Btw, there's like no anime like this... it's a one of a kind art and portrayal of characters/story/lifethemes.

ZERO NO TSUKAIMA F (SEASON 4) 8.5/10 It's cutesy and the plotline is interesting. The only reason I give it a 8.5 is because it's not the kind of anime I'm totally into right now, I like dark stuff right now, but before when my taste was around cutesyactiony romance things it would've been a ten. Watch the first 3 seasons first!

Final fantasy XIII-2 10/10- as a sequel to the original it is truly a successor to its predecessor square has truly developed the game and has made it even better than the first when it comes to battle mechanics, improved game play. New additions like cinematic action, monster leveling up as well as infusing them with other monsters, no more game over if you're the leader and let's not forget no more upgrading weapons that was truly a pain in the behind. As for the story it was good except for the real ending which it lead me well I won't say it.

So I will say the spoiler here. --Click here to view--
There is going to be a XIII-3 next year or the year after that.

Hmm... let's see... right now, I'm not "stuck" with any anime, but I remember a few I watch every now and then... (I'm not sure if this will show spoilers, but I'll say so just in case...)

Love Hina: 10/10: Even though the manga is better, the anime is pretty amazing to see too. I have to admit that at some point, I was frustrated with Naru, but the development of the relationship between Keitaro and the girls (and of course, the humor) kept me addicted to it. It would be cool if someone made a remake which could follow the manga.

I's pure: 7/10: The I's series (manga) is one of my favorites due to a few things: The fact that you actually don't know what Iori has on her mind, the internal struggle that Seto faces every time he tries to establish communication with Iori, and the chemistry each character displays when encouraging those two. I can become a bit tedious at times, but it's an amazing manga (I can argue that this one has one of the most amazing endings. I'm pretty sure it will make anyone cry and smile at the same time). Now, the anime is a recapitulation of the manga (correct me if the word is wrong), however, it sacrifices part of the essence of the manga (plus it eliminates a few characters and events). Despite this, if you read the manga first, I advise you to see I's pure.

Initial D: 9/10: For the people who have a hidden admiration for cars, or for those who love racing (in this case, drifting), Initial D displays the journey of Fujiwara Takumi, a young boy whose appearance can be deceiving for many people who race him. Only one thing disappointed me with this anime, but apart from that, great anime to see.

...and that's all for now. smile.gif
