CURSED BLOODLINE

719.jpg

This theory will postulate that the ancestors of the Uchiha Clan are a high-ranked Shugendo monk (yamabushi) and a Hyuga female. UCHIHA MADARA

Based on the history of Saito Musashibo Benkei

701.jpg

Saito Musashibo Benkei is a legendary warrior of Japanese history. He is believed to be the son of the head of a temple shrine and the daughter of a blacksmith; another story says that he is the son of a temple god. (This theory will be based on the first probability of Benkei's parents as he is an actual, historical figure.)

Sometimes called oniwaka (demon child) simply because of his physical features, Benkei is usually depicted with long hair and sharp teeth. He also epitomizes great strength.

During his late teens, Benkei joined the yamabushi (mountain warrior). But not long after dropped out of the monastery and became a robber. He attempted to rob Yokittensune no Minamoto, a general of the Minamoto Clan, only to lose in the fight. Because of his defeat, Benkei swore to Yokittensune his loyalty and service until he died.

From then on, Benkei served under Yokittensune as a sohei (monk warrior). They became the best of friends.

702.jpg

See how Madara can possibly fit as Benkei and Shodaime as Yokittensune.

If Madara (like Sasuke) was able to suppress Kyuubi's chakra and Shodaime was able to control bijuus, they make good, strong partners.

If Madara served under Shodaime Hokage, this may help explain why the Uchiha Clan became the police arm of Konoha. CURSE OF THE EVIL EYE

Based on the Legend of the Hyuga Princess

Legend of Ninigi no Mikoto and Konohanasakuya-hime

Ninigi-no-mikoto, the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, was sent from heaven to ease aggravation in Japan. Upon his descent, he was met by an earthly god. Sarutahiko, one with a rosy face, long nose and a large beard, became Ninigi's guide in his journey.

703.jpg

When Ninigi arrived at Mt. Takachiho in Hyuga, he met the beautiful princess Konohanasakuya-hime (blooming flower of the tree princess). Ninigi asked for her hand in marriage from her father, Oho-Yamatsumi. The father eagerly agreed and even sent Konohanasakuya-hime's sister, Iwanaga-hime (rocks princess) as well.

However, Ninigi found Iwanaga-hime so ugly that he sent her back, causing Iwanaga-hime (in some accounts, Oho-Yamatsumi himself) to curse Ninigi and Konohanasakuya-hime's descendants with shortened life-span; beautiful like cherry blossoms but short-lived unlike a rock.

After one night with Ninigi, Konohanasakuya-hime got pregnant. Ninigi doubted the fatherhood of the baby (another account says that the sister caused such rumors). This angered Konohanasakuya-hime, saying that she will give birth to the baby in a burning hut. Should the baby be unscathed, he is the child of a heavenly god; otherwise, he is the child of an earthly god.

Konohanasakuya-hime gave birth to triplets: Hoderi, Hosuseri and Hoori, all of whom were unscathed. In the end, however, Ninigi admitted he believed his wife in the first place.

After some time, Ninigi and Konohanasakuya-hime were separated even in death. Nonetheless, it is also believed that they will be “reborn and reunited someday.”

Konohanasakuya-hime and the Hyuga Clan

Byakugan also means evil eye.

718.jpg

In popular folklore, the curse of the evil eye – intentional or otherwise - is usually brought upon by envy, whether of material possession, beauty, among others. It is believed that people with the evil eye can bestow a curse just by looking at their victims.

The marriage of the Uchiha monk and the Hyuga female may have caused the envy or jealousy of the Hyuga's elder sister, which have caused the latter to curse said union. (This may have also lead to the separation of the main and branch houses; causing the branch house to serve and protect the main house. In the myth, Iwanaga-hime is older than Konohanasakuya-hime).

The curse of the shortened life span may be the massacre of the Uchiha clan.

The triplets of Konohanasakuya-hime may be portrayed by the three mangekyou sharingan users. The multiple-birth are also comparable that occur of the Hyuga clan (Hiashi and Hizashi).

Finally, Itachi and Sasuke's parents names are Fugaku (of or related to Mt. Fuji) and Mikoto (an honorific added to the name of a god). The goddess of Mt. Fuji is Konohanasakuya-hime. Like the Uchihas, it was believed that she also had the ability to control fire.

Konohanasakuya-hime and Hinata

Hinata's hobby is oshibana, an art that uses pressed, dried flowers. Unlike Konohanasakuya-hime, Hinata is able to conserve the bloom of flowers, preserving them.

In Chinese geomancy, the evil eye may be deflected by the bagua mirror. The bagua is similar to the Hyuga divination field.

  IZANAGI AND THE YAMABUSHI

It may also be possible to relate the Uchiha to Izanagi, father of the Shinto Trinity.

Mangekyou sharingan have techniques named after two of the Shinto kami: Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi. Susanoo, although yet (if at all) to be named after a jutsu, seems to be portrayed by Sasuke.

Note the similarities in the weapons held by the different depiction of Izanagi and that of the yamabushi. The naginata is said to be the weapon of the yamabushi. SHARINGAN AND THE POWER OF YAMABUSHI

Yamabushi are individuals who seek mountain-dwelling life, and search for spiritual, mystical, or supernatural powers by practicing Shugendo.

Shugendo is a religion that combines the different aspects of Taoism, Shintoism, esoteric Buddhism and the practice of sorcery. Shugendo literally means path of training and testing, a path that will lead to absolute enlightenment.

Yamabushi also study martial arts as means to improve one's mental, spiritual and physical being. They are associated with the ninja as it is believed that shinobi tactics started in places where yamabushi inhabited.

The yamabushi are believed to spread cults dedicated to the god of fire and are often related to supernatural beings like the tengu, which are said to instruct the monks in rites and knowledge and teach nasty tricks.

There are a lot of 'powers' shugendo followers are believed to manifest. But there are three themes that dominate:

Identification with a deity – the yamabushi chooses a deity they wish to identify themselevs with. Naruto manga chapter 314 depicts that yamabushi worship the tengu.

Having been descendants of a high-ranked Shugendo monk, it may only be customary that the Uchiha worshiped the tengu as well.

Manipulation of supernatural powers of the chosen deity – the yamabushi wields supernatural powers of the chosen deity. Hence, this may be a reason why some Uchiha members manifest powers associated to that of a tengu.

Exorcism of the negative influence – the yamabushi removes the negative influence of the power wielded and now may be used for good. Also, indirectly, this may have been depicted by Sasuke (and perhaps Madara), who seemed able to suppress Kyuubi's (tailed beast) chakra.

Other abilities include of genjutsu (magic, illusion) and divination, among others. A sharingan user can cast genjutsu upon an opponent he makes eye contact with; divination may refer to how a (mature) sharingan user can foresee an opponent's next attack.

In Shugendo, a higher rank in the sect may be granted only if a follower is able to pass tests. Yamabushi are known to realize spiritual powers through personal experiences.

Similarly, the different levels of the sharingan (judged by the number of tomoe) are only achieved after certain prerequisites. In Uchiha cases, prerequisites seem to range from experiences that cause extreme distress to the user or life-threatening situations.

It may appear that for some reason, the union of the yamabushi and the Hyuga female may have lead to the evolution of a new duojutsu with (yamabushi) mystical powers. Being a kekkei genkai ensures it to be passed from one generation to another.

The Uchiha also may portray yamabushi who are not strictly members of a sect but are an extended order (also called sohei). Such extension may be evident through inferior monasteries, dojos and lower temples.

Shugendo is a religion that stresses physical endurance and trial as a means to realizing personal strength, and ultimately, enlightenment. A priest from Seigantoji Temple in Western Japan said,

Quote:

  • It's part of our ascetic practice to have suffering... You think you cannot go on, but you keep going on. When there is suffering it turns into not suffering. If the way is too easy, it can lead to suffering.

Uchiha Shisui's suicide note.

Another account about Japanese shamanistic practices by Carmen Blacker says that the path of shugendo can be a brutal discipline.

For awhile, shugendo was banned in Japan because of superstition and when the Meiji government insisted the separation of Shinto and Buddhism. Shugendo temples were converted into Shinto shrines.

711.jpg

A very secretive group, beliefs and rituals of Shugendo could only be passed on from master to disciple after a certain level has been achieved.

The practice of shugendo is confidential, especially to neophytes. This belief is to ensure the spiritual faith as they get into the journey of finding value in living a sacred, daily life.

712.jpg

Sasuke, then eight years old, may have been considered a neophyte. One who was yet to know the path. There is also the uncertainty of how exactly mangekyou sharingan can be achieved, and this may have caused fear amongst the Uchiha themselves.

713.jpg

714.jpg

Itachi may have been torn between his duties as a member of a clan that protects Konoha, and what may be the purpose of the sharingan – absolute enlightenment (in this case, awakening the highest capability of sharingan).

To measure his utsuwa, was Itachi's reason for killing the clan. This is similar to how sohei view themselves as soul containers who seek power to explore one's being and understand one's purpose. They believe in expanding the consciousness as this liberates people from limiting beliefs.

Personal interests aside, Itachi may have left Sasuke alive so the latter can suffer as this is a path that allows Sasuke to find his own being and purpose, for him to find happiness and spiritual truth.

Quote:

  • Healing old wounds and inner conflicts, letting go of pain, and arriving at the graceful place of living from your feeling heart. Your mind as your strongest ally, learning to use your mind for clear thinking, staying in the present; all in ways that serve you to live your life -in the here and now...
    - warriormonk.org

If the Uchiha ancestor is a yamabushi (literally, mountain warrior) and if the Uchiha Clan is somehow related to Shugendo, this may help explain why the Uchiha hideout where Itachi and Sasuke met each other is seemingly located on a mountain.

739.jpg REVIVAL OF SHARINGAN

733.jpg

If the above theory is assumed,

Yamabushi abilities + Byakugan = Sharingan

The evolution of a new bloodline limit may be due to the replacement of byakugan abilities with yamabushi abilities, which means that the latter may be more dominant than the former. Genetically, byakugan abilities also have equal chances of resurfacing in the earlier years of the Uchiha Clan but this didn't seem to happen as the said clan advanced.

Do note, however, that the gene(s) responsible for making the Sharingan and the Byakugan a bloodline limit in the first place may be the same.

Hence, an advantage of having a Hyuga consort for reviving the Sharingan is that an offspring may inherit either gene(s) that allow the duojutsu to be passed on - and Sharingan has a higher chance of surviving future generations. Expression of Sharingan abilities, of course, is user subjective. Akatsuki and Religion

If the Yamabushi and Shugendo may be related to the Uchiha Clan, then the belief that suffering pain to achieve an ‘enlightened level’ is parallel to the Akatsuki leader, Pein.

740.jpg

In the same chapter, Pein is also quoted to say:

“… I, living in the center of an infinite universe of pain have grown from a person, to something more…”

While the author doubts Kishimoto would specify any religion in Naruto, however, there are other members of the Akatsuki who may also be associated to religion:

741.jpg

Hidan practices Jashin, a religion where a follower promotes killing and anything less is considered a sin (in circumstances where killing isn’t allowed, Hidan has to ask forgiveness).

During his fight against Sarutobi Asuma, he is quoted to say that living through the pain of others makes him feel better.

The encircled image in the left panel is one of the kittenenno, the Four Heavenly Kings of Buddhism.

Deidara’s katsu! is an expression in Zen Buddhism used to express one’s enlightened state.
