It really depends on what I'm inking.
If I'm inkin a CG then digital
if I'm inking manga then by hand

Well, if I'm drawing (hardly likely, since I'm not an artist myself, but I try on the rare occasion), I'd prefer digital -- it's significantly easier for me, and would look better. Or, to put it another way, it's about the only method I can do it.

However, if the skill of the artist with hand inking and digital were equal, I think I prefer the APPEARANCE of hand-inking, usually. It looks more natural.

I agree with Desaix. Hand-inked pictures and drawings look better than digital.

To bad their is no vote for neither, when I draw...wich now is a rarity. I never colored my images. All the mecha I ever drew was all black and white, and it stayed that way. However if I knew someone who could color, I guess I would choose digitally, since its more shard and crisp.

I just like the way hand inking looks. It just makes it look more natural if you have it inked by hand.

For digital, you did have to be real good in using the mouse..

Ill go with digital, because its what i wolud use if you ever saw me drawing something (unlikley) I can hardly draw anything beyond stick figures

I think there should be a "mixed media" option: the combination of digital and traditional style of drawing.

While both has advantages(I won't point out), both styles has disadvantages too:

Digital: You need to have the expensive and not-so-expensive tools (computer,tablet(optional), drawing program, mouse, scanner, etc.) and requires knowledge and skill in using those.
Tradi: Requires talent in using media, there's no undo option, can be easily damaged(esp. when you're using paper)

The adv/disad are based on my experience. (If mixed media won't be considered) I would prefer the hand-inking(traditional) more since it's more easy to manipulate though I use digital more since it appears better to me and I can't afford to pay the scanning again...

Well, I like all three (digi, hand, mixed). For me, it comes down to the picture rather than how it's made.

For me MAKING something, I'm trying a mixed approach. I like to draw the picture in freehand pencil first. I'm trying to decide whether hand-inking or using the PC to ink is best. I'm leaning towards CGing because I like to draw my pictures small then blow them up on the PC.

I'm using Photoshop, but I'm also experimenting with the trial of OpenCanvas 4, which is pretty solid so far. Like Painter, it lets you rotate the picture freely for natural strokes. If only Photoshop had that! You can still rotate the picture at 90-degree (or custom input) increments though it's not as quick or natural.

I have been lucky enough to talk to people that work in comics as a way of life and even more lucky to see them "do their magic" and what I learned is that is that whatever you feel more happy with it works.

For example we have Fred Perry (Golddiger, Legacy) he uses 100% digital nowdays when he does his comics, he likes it and to him this is a faster way of doing it.

On the other side we have Ben Dunn (Ninja High School, Mangaverse) he makes his comics and inks them by pen and ink, because he likes to do it by hand.

I do agree using the digital may seem more expensive (PC, Tablet, etc) but the traditional way alway imples cost (paper, ink, pencils, erasers, brushes, etc) and that is not cheap either. Another thing is that if you make 1 mistake in the traditional way, you have to start from 0 while in the digital you just hit the undo function

I work digital because it has more rooom for making errors, a color, a mistake in the stroke on the brush, etc. all can be fix very easy... downside of this, sometimes its too much time consuing and you may get tired and give up because it requires constant practice.

this is how I got it, so I get to work ink it with only a mouse and my love for comics and after pretty much 6 hours or sometimes even 8 to ink 1 page

nowdays I work as the colorist of that comic and I dont ink anymore this is my most recent work



So if you go digital or traditional or a hybrid in between the two, dont worry, the rule here is do your best, and use any tools that can help you do your art faster and better.

It was interesting to see your work, TonyG.

I think one of the downsides of digital can be the amount of time required to work on a picture. For example, I'm much faster inking by hand than by PC tablet. But I still tend to feel a little uncomfortable if I'm trying to draw a large picture from stratch.

CG Colouring is about the same amount of time as hand for me (at least from the small experiments I've tried), but it definitely has more flexibility - as you said, you can change and adjust colours and effects if you don't like them.

I'll try something today (if I can grab the time, if not then next week), maybe try to draw something at a comfortable size - then scan it in on PC and blow it up. Print it out and do a new, more detailed pencil drawing by tracing the sketch.

can you tell me the base color code you use for skin? mine never seems to come out right.

well it takes a bit of work there, try using the option multiply on the brush and play with the colors making it a bit lighter or darker, or you can just take the color base from other images you like the skin color using the eyedrop tool in photoshop.

=__= I ink by hand and clean up and fix stuff on the computer. But I don't really have the time to scan anything now, so my hand drawn stuff is all inked by hand and my computer art is all done my paint in windows.

Tony G, that's nice lineart.

Any tips on how to make lineart faster? 'cause my hands end up dead tired whenever I work on a very clean lineart.
