Okay, background information:
I'm currently working on something - this something may just be a one-shot, I'm honestly not too sure (but it seems to be leaning towards a full on chapter).
But it evolved out of a feeling I've had for some time: Itachi is, in every sense of the word, a hero. From the day he's born, he devotes himself to the village, hardly receives recognition for it, and dies, trying to make his brother into a hero. His love for Sasuke is one of the most beautiful aspects about Naruto, and – I'll be honest – I'm a man, and when Itachi died, I cried. Not teared. Bawled. So there's my honest confession.
I love the character of Itachi. He's developed superbly by Kishimoto, so kudos to him.
So here are my questions/problems/areas of advice-needing:
1) I'd like to avoid character bashing. A lot of Itachi fics I've read seem to Bash Danzou as the evil mastermind behind all of this, or crush Sasuke as an incompetent, selfish meanie-face who can never understand Itachi.
It seems a lot more complicated than that. At least, from Danzou's death, he seems more of a character that I can empathize with.
He really, really wants what's best for Konoha - he's just very, very misguided in the policies he implements.
So I need some help striking a balance between the two and perhaps understanding exactly how the you will massacre the Uchiha clan went down
a) who ordered the kill?
b) Sasuke refers to - 'even you couldn't kill them all yourself' - who helped Itachi, if anyone did?
2) Some details I need a little help with as well
We know from the manga that Itachi DID have a girlfriend, who he was, tragically, forced to kill. Do we know who she is? How they met? Were they in love? Was she *pregnant*? Etc.
3) We know he has that famous ethereal sword and that really powerful shield - do we at all know how he got them?
4) Did the fourth Hokage already accept Hokage-ship by the time Itachi was born?
5) For any of you more experienced writers/readers (basically everyone haha), if you have any advice for me, I'd really really appreciate it.
I know I've been clogging this section of the forum a lot recently, so I really appreciate your patience.
Thank you soooo much.

This is a really great idea. I love Itachi. He is probably my favorite character next to Shikamaru. Send me a PM and I'll try and see if I can help you out or not with the writing portion of it.
If you're looking for history and conjectures about that, I suggest asking someone else. There are some great people on the forum who have some really good theories that they may allow you to use.

It's probably a good idea to put the chapter sample in a spoiler tag and not double post. Just for future reference
I like the story so far. It's a nice, realistic take on Itachi's illness and the tension behind Uchiha pride and family. You're right - Itachi is indeed a hero and he deserves a good story about him
I'll also try and answer some of your questions. Sorry I don't know all of them, and my answers may not be right, but here we go!
I do remember that Itachi had a lover. In chapter 401, Tobi/Madara says: "Itachi had killed his friends, his superiors, had killed his lover and his father and mother". Since Itachi's mission was to kill his clan, I'm inclined to believe that his girlfriend was also an Uchiha. If you think about it, Itachi wouldn't kill his lover for no reason, even if he was trying to cut off his ties. I'd imagine that clans like Uchiha and Hyuuga may marry within the clan to keep the bloodline strong or something. Rather irrelevant, but royal families used to do that.
If you assume that his girlfriend was an Uchiha, how they met wouldn't be much of an issue. As for 'were they in love'? Well. That's hard to tell. They could have been in love. Or the two of them could have been put together by the clan. Itachi is around 5 years older than Sasuke. Sasuke was 7-9 ish (I think) when his clan was murdered, so that puts Itachi at 12-14. The clan may have arranged for Itachi and his 'lover' to be together, intending for them to eventually marry. That's one interpretation. As for pregnancy, considering Itachi's age at the time, I'd like to think she wasn't XD
Oh boy, we'll need a lot of history for this... bear with me.
- Minato became Hokage after the Third Shinobi War (getting this off Narutopedia)
- During the war, 'Kakashi Gaiden' took place, where they blew up a bridge and Obito died. Itachi had just been promoted to jounin at the time, and it's stated that he became jounin at 13.
- So. Kakashi is currently 29-30years old. That means the war was on 16-17 years ago. It was probably 14-16 years ago that the war ended (guesswork here) and Minato became Yondaime.
- When he died, Itachi was 21.
- If I did the math right, that means Itachi was definitely born before Minato became Yondaime and might have been 5-7 years old (not accurate at all, just guesswork).
It's a bit of a confusing thought process - it worked out in my head XD In conclusion, if I'm not wrong, Minato accepted Hokageship after Itachi was born.
Unfortunately, that's all I can contribute. Hopefully others can help. Good luck writing!

I LOVE Itachi, too XD.
I like the start of the story. The writing is clear and the grammar is excellent. It's a new perspective to have Fugaku in such a human light, because personally, I believe he was a coldish man. A typical head co clan, like Hiashi was. But your story gave him a nice human side.
As for Itachi's GF, she was definitely an Uchiha since she was massacred too. And as Peanut said - Itachi was around 13-14 when the massacre occured, so I very much doubt that she would have been pregnant. But then, this is Naruto world, so who knows!
And Itachi was 5-ish when Naruto was born / Kyuubi attack / Minato died, so it's difficult to say how old was Itachi when Minato became Hokage or whether he was already born. I would tend to say Itachi was not yet born when Minato became Hokage - but I may be wrong.
best of luck for the rest of the story!

Thank you to all for the replies, you were all a tremendous help!
I think I'm going to make the Yondaime become Hokage when Itachi is about six months old.
