Bloody Hell, Azami was literally the newspaper fanboy Souma has, down to the gormless puppy dog look and jumper....To think this scrupulous daughter abusing SOB was a lame fanboy at one point.

I agree with Yyubie's post above about difference in views In fact it remids me of the shift we've seen in cooking programs over the last couple of decades, where before it was gourmet chefs, making fancy dishes, using the est ingredients, where in the late 90's we started seeing a variety of different styles, we saw more chefs travel the world, learning techniques from commoners who have been mastering their trade for centuries making use of the resources they have. This feels like it's a similar scenario, Azami is the old guard who believes in the best ingredients cooked using techniques passed down by the elite chefs from around the world where Jouchirou got tired of that and wanted to learn the true nature of cooking in the world, learning about those back alley restaurants, that serve hundreds of meals a day using the same ingredients everyone else buys, yet have regulars coming back for more.

Assuming Jouichiro's Generation entered around 1988-1990ish, then the timeline lines up with exactly what you're saying. Which means Jouichiro saw the current cooking trend shifting to what it is in the real world right now. And not just because of his wife too.

It was never stated if Jouichiro fed Soma's mom his worst dish nightmares

Well In celebration of recent developments, I'm finally going to start part 5 of my fan fiction!!!  I know it is long overdue lol But it is kind of long So I'll split it into 2 parts

Part 5 (first half)

 

*Soma calls Alice*

 

Alice: Soma! How have you been, cousin?

Soma: Alright I guess, Things have been busy at home. Hey listen, I need a favor.

Alice: sure thing! But are you just calling me for that?

Soma: Yeah I want to take Sho to see new places and experience new ways of cooking. Sho wants to bring his knife but well, The airport will cause problems.

Alice:  Oh! Of course I'll  help out my adorable nephew! So you need a private jet?

Soma: Yeah, that'd be fine

Alice: No problem, but where are you going though?

Soma: Europe First. I actually want Sho to experience french Cooking.

Alice: Ah I see.  Oh wait, isn't Erina going there for her tour?

Soma: Yeah, Erina made me think of Europe actually.

Alice: well, I'll make the arrangements.

Soma: thanks I appreciate it.

Alice: Treat me and Ryo-kun to a meal next time as thanks.

 

*Erina is waitng for the doctor to arrive* 

 

Hisako: So Erina-sama, Are Soma-sama and Sho-sama doing well?

*Erina looks at her and smiles*

Erina: Yes. In fact I think Sho is getting taller. He is constantly having matches with his father  but hasn't won a single time yet.

Hisako: I'm sure He'll be a great chef Erina-sama! Although I hope he doesn't turn out to be too much like Soma-sama.

Erina: *giggles* Too late for that! Perhaps I'm not home often enough. I suppose I'll take some time off after this.

Hisako: Oh the doctor is here! We should get going.

Erina: Yes.

 

*Back at Yukihira*

 

Soma: Okay we're off!

Jouichiro: Right, give'em what you've got Sho!

Megumi: Good luck Sho-kun! Learn all you can, okay?

Sho: Okay Auntie Megumi! See you later grandpa!

 

*Soma and Sho head off to the Nakiri estate*

So if history repeats itself, Souma won't be taking the first seat either, because there is no was he'd be up to the task of getting all the paperwork done on time, it also hints that Rindou may actually be the best chef from the elite ten, as she seems to be very similar to Jouchirou in the sense she really is not your typical Elite member, I wonder if that's why Azami didn't get rid of her as well, be cause she reminds him of his beloved Sempai.

Lol, that's what I was thinking. At least in the beginning, Erina, who will prob be 1st seat, will have to deal with the paperwork. It would be nice to see though if she could kick Soma's ass a little bit. I have a hard time imagining that she's just gonna be fine with doing all of the paper work.

Other people have also said that Rindou might be the true no 1 at Tootsuki right now. Right now, we haven't seen her cooking skills yet, but we'll see.

I liked the newest chapter. I felt like we deserved this after those dragging Soma vs Hayama chapters (there was no excuse for drawing this out to 11 chapters).

So basically what this chapter is hinting at is that Jouichirou became burnt out to live up to everyone's expectations and annoyed with the fact that no one really appreciated his experimentation and effort. Those elites ALWAYS expected greatness from him, while he seemed to value the "surprise" factor more. Remember how he said "The journey's no fun if you know where you are going"?

I thought it was interesting how Gin was implying that Soma and Jouchirou are not that alike as Megumi and Takumi made them out to be.

Oh, and Jouichiro was quite the good looker back in his youth

I would like the scenario to be that Soma and Erina are equal in cooking skills but Erina is far more responsible and contributing to the school so that's why she has the first seat. It wouldn't make sense for there to be such a huge gap in cooking yet the superior chef gets a lower seat due to laziness and eccentricities. It's boring, and not very well excused (lazy even) for why the best are not acknowledged as the best for their skills where it should most count. If you ask me at least.

At the same time, the Elite 10 have administrative powers... I'm not really ok if an Elite 10 member simply ignores his or her responsiblities. Being an Elite 10 member is more than just a title that shows the class rank. They are actively involved in the planning and logistics of the school activities... I've always wondered how lazy ass main characters like Soma can deal with administrative responsibilities (look at Naruto becoming Hokage... he seems so unhappy). I feel like he doesn't know what he himself gets into. In here, it seems to be COMPLETELY ok to shift these tasks aside to the other members, lol.

Seriously though, the skill level b/w Jouichirou and Gin in High School was rather shocking.

It actually does make sense, we can think of another manga where a unqualified individual got to the top seat, yet he's painfully underskilled for the job and his personal life and the skills that made him get to the top suffer because of it. The Elite 10 is more than just being the best at cooking but people management and other skills needed to run a successful restaurant. It feels very much like the school is run like a Corporate business, with Elite ten the Board of Directors, and the number one seat is the CEO or Managing Director.

 

I did like the chapter, it's a shame that Hayama's battle got so many chapters, yet from the speed at which this is flashback is going it looks like the backstory will be over next week or the week after. I have the feeling that we won't get the flashback of how Jouchirou met his wife and how their relationship developed.

OK this chapter was the creation of the "Asura of Cooking." (I forgot about his nickname.) Basically, he has gotten so sick of everyone just assuming he is a genius, and not noticing how much work he put into his cooking (besides his dorm-mates that is). That he has become completely and utterly vicious in the food wars, destroying his opponents. This disturbed his best friend, while other hand Mr. "Notice me Sempai" saw it as sublime and made his ideal around the Asura. So I say next chapter is a focus on this attitude effect on the people around him. Then next chapter him meeting his future wife which admires the work he puts into everyone of his dishes.Then a chapter which he falls for her and leaves the school for her. Then another chapter of his leaving the school effect it has on everyone.

Whoa chapter 196 was intense, and his nickname finally makes sense, it's amazing to to see how this flashback compares to Minato's flashback. Both fathers were talked about being geniuses, yet iafter Minato's flashback many fans mocked him, failing to see the supposed genius he was, as was largely a three trick pony, Rasengan, that he adapted from Bijuu, the Seals he learnt from Jiraiya and Kushina and his Flying Thunder God technique he copied off the second Hokage, he looked below par when compared to the other Hokages. Yet here we see Jouchirou and he looks like a real genius at a whole another level, no one else seems to come close to him, to a point that his hard work and dedication is overlooked by everyone else because he is so much better than everyone.

 

I just realised, this chapter likely means Azami was trying to turn Erina into a female version of Asura Jouchirou, It does make you wonder about Azami's motives is he trying to have a conformed standard so no other chef becomes disillusioned like Jouchirou, or is he continuing the work he felt Jouchirou left behind? Or did Jouchirou give him such a thrashing that he hardened up and became a by product of Jouchirou's rage...either way it is looking more and more like Azami is a product of Jouchirou's actions. This likely means after this arc is over, Azami will be a new man who will be forgiven for his deeds and looking very much like he'll be the Orichimaru of the series.

^i disagree. minato is still famed for his quick thinking in battles, enemy soldiers are told 'escape on sight' if they spotted him in the ninja war. also his encounter with A and Bee is still cool.
