I feel like I need to warn you guys.
For those who write M fic as in lemon be careful
Here what I found in the front page from fic

Please note we would like to clarify the content policy we have in place since 2002.FanFiction.Net follows the Fiction Ratingsystem ranging from Fiction K to Fiction M.Although Fiction Ratings goes up to Fiction MA, FanFiction.Net since 2002has not allowed Fiction MA rated content which can contain adult/explicit content on the site. FanFiction.Net only accepts content in the Fiction K through Fiction M range.Fiction M can contain adult language, themes and suggestions. Detailed descriptionsof physical interaction of sexual or violent nature is considered Fiction MA and has not been allowed on the site since 2002.

And here another from the author

Attention readers and writers of fanfiction, Igive you an important message. Fanfiction is cracking down on writers of lemons and violence in their stories.Look on the front page if you do not believe me. Save all of your stories and profile pages right now, if you do not either remove the stories that have violence in them or have lemons in them then you will be banned from fanfiction. HURRY!

As you spread the word save your stories.HURRY!

So I don't want to lose all my favorite stories that have lemon on it but honestly I give you a warning sad.gif

I've been a member of fanfiction.net since 2007 and I haven't gotten my account remove or my stories deleted (yes I write lemons). I think the responsibility of reading M rated stories that contains violence and sexual explicit content are the readers themselves. They should know very well which stories are good to read depending on their age. They also have a rating system and when I write an M rated story I always give a warning that the story or chapter may contain lemons, I'm very strict when it comes to give warnings. If that's not enough the site itself should have a security system for the members who are younger than 18, that should activate whenever they're about to read an M rated story blocking them from reading such. Now for those who don't have an account then I guess the site should separate all M rated stories and add them to a different section of the site.

Besides this isn't something to take to an extreme strict level because this is just fan fiction. I think reading a lemon scene is way different than actually watching a pornographic movie. The readers are the ones to be concern what they choose to read, it is not the fault of the author's themselves. it is the same thing with video games they all have a rating system that classifies them which are edible for children, teenagers and adults. And it's up to parents to decide which games they buy for their children. This also applies to the use of the internet for children under 13, it's the parents job to make sure what are their children seeing as they surf through the net.

Fanfiction.net was EXTREMELY strict about this when it first instituted the policy -- almost 20% of the fanfiction on ff.net disappeared literally overnight (maybe more), and there were a lot of protests (several fanfic authors I followed withdrew from the site altogether in response to the change). Similar thing with songfics (fics were being pulled off for having "happy birthday" lyrics in them), and several other policies they've instituted. It's been years since the last major policy revision of that sort, though, and honestly, they don't seem to do any policing any more at all. What little that does happen seems rather random and arbitrary, so... *shrug*

You haven't experienced the full cofusion of modern gender relations until you've heard an angry group of women yelling, "We want tentacles!" at an all-night Hentai-fest.

I'm thinking management has changed hands. Before the M-rated warning went up, I noticed that the front page was being updated almost every other day with some new system they had tweaked on FFnet, or some new addition, or some issue that had been fixed. I was mildly impressed because FF.net is notorious for having numerous issues/site shutdowns/inaccessible pages/etc and normally you don't hear a peep from the staff. Now suddenly we were getting practically daily updates on all the new 'fixes and changes' going on behind the scenes on the site. My guess is that the new owners are kind of like what Google is like with Youtube. Before Google bought it out you could watch pretty much anything you wanted on Youtube, copyrights be damned. Now if you have even 30 seconds of a song in a video, they cut off the sound or the entire video, no matter the length of the vid, and sometimes even just take the video down completely without warning to the uploader. And forget about watching your fave series from beginning to end anymore. You'll be lucky to find 4 eps, and that's after searching long and hard to find what you want.

And I also remember the uproar that went up when they deleted M-rated stories back then, some with over 100,000 words and hundreds and hundreds of reviews. My heart broke for those authors, because for some of them Fanfiction.net was the only place they had their story uploaded. And all those reviews gone in the blink of an eye. And the staff of FF.net at the time were completely unapologetic, and I just remember thinking at the time that these people running the site were not authors/writers. No writer could do something like that to another, and be so heartless and cruel about it. It truly disgusted me at the time.

And now it looks like we may have to brace ourselves for something similar happening again hm.png

Edit - Purge 2012 has already begun. Many incensed authors are sounding off here

https://www.facebook...49359514?ref=ts

And Fanfiction.net staff is actually deleting posts/forums/reviews that call them out for the purging or try to point upset authors to other fiction posting sites. You can't have your damn cake and eat it too, FF.net. You can't piss off practically all your site members by yanking entire stories without warning, and then not expect them to bail ship after.

This is what happen when I got upset when I noticed some of my favorite stories are almost gone. I know most authors are working so hard to create any of their stories so far. This is so wrong. Almost several stories are quite good to read from the authors. sad.gif

Good thing I give you guys a warning and I know some of you are from fanfiction and writing pretty good. All authors are working so hard to make the stories.

Yeah, it sounds awful. And looking at the front page I would be inclined to agree that something has happened behind the scenes at FF.net. Management change, new web team...something's different.

The bad thing is the terms for removal are so broad:

"Fiction M can contain adult language, themes and suggestions. Detailed descriptions of physical interaction of sexual or violent nature is considered Fiction MA and has not been allowed on the site since 2002."

It sounds like it's not just lemons, but fight scenes as well. "Adult language, themes and suggestions" is incredibly vague.

So disappointed. They gave us new icons, but their taking away stories.

Is there an easy way to save stories (like a download button in DeviantArt) other than just plain ol' copy and paste?

I have, and though not much may come from it, at least it's something we can all do to show our incredible displeasure with what FFnet is doing. And who knows, it may actually make a difference.

There is a little more that can be done.... But it involves sticking to your guns.

• Boycott. And make noise about boycotting, like starting a DA group for fanfiction.net refugees or making stamps that say "boycott ff.net."

• Participate in another site, and be explicit about why you've joined (fleeing ff.net). DA accepts fanfic and you'd never get pitched off for overly mature content! laugh.gif

• Start or help start a new fanfic site. There desperately needs to be one. DA is good, but they don't offer specific enough support (as in searchability).

I understand that most don't want to do that. But it's been my experience that people/groups won't change unless they feel pain. If ff.net is moving in this direction, then they're committed. It will be really hard to get them to reconsider unless they feel some pain.

Anyway, just some thoughts. Every little bit helps. And a petition is a great place to start making some noise. It will be interesting to see just how far this purge goes. Give them enough rope, they may just hang themselves. It's not like ff.net is a user-friendly site. This may just tip one or two users into finally building another, infintely better fanfiction site!

It's astonishing that the administrators are not giving authors a chance to edit the offensive segments from their stories. It would be so much easier to send a mass email of warning. I think most authors would comply, opting to link out to the mature content parked elsewhere.

I don't know if my one shot "Other Dreams" falls into the category to be purged. It's steamy, but not explicit. Like I said, what are the rules? And how are they deciding this? By what is reported? Or by doing a search for "lemon" and every other sexy term on the site?

Fanlore has an interesting infographic about the stats of the purge.

Again, for a site that depends on users for it's life blood, arbitrarily deleting stories and reviews is a really stupid move.

edit: More than 17,000 HP fics were deleted between May 28-31, 2012. More than 9,000 Naruto stories were deleted. Check out the graphic. Very interesting.

Looking at those numbers: they're targeting the popular series that has tons of stories and authors first and guess who's number 2? Naruto. Harry Potter and Twilight are in that range too.

Other than that, I'm highly disappointed that all of those authors' hard work will be deleted. Now sexual content/lemons I can understand, but violence? Really? Since the US is basically scream"Oh HAI Violence!" anytime, anyday? And like Sakura Blossoms said, FF.net are trying to act like Google and Youtube because they are (The only) very popular site for fanfiction. And the situation probably started of a threat of some kind from a parent of a child who was reading inappropriate material to shut down the site forever which may have cause the staff there to become strict.

And more than that, it makes no sense! Why go through that work when a mass email to those affected, with a deadline to either change or have it removed, would have solved most of the problems!

Either they have a purge-nazi on staff now or they were facing the threat of a lawsuit of some kind, as you said. Like I said, no one changes without some pain involved. So there must be some reason to spur this great change.

Stuff like this sinks web sites. They make money from each of those pages through the ads placed on the sides. So for them to delete pages means that they are hurting their own revenue. Not to mention the potential to have mass groups boycott the site. And opens the door to competition who can do it better and not have restrictions.

edit:

Looks like some competition is already figuring it out....

(I have to apologize to tricksie and anybody who caught my first post. I had to delete it because I misread and misunderstood Gravenimage's post). So if you want to reply what I had said the first time, quoted it.

Anyways, yeah I agree. Its all about popularity or a possible threat to close the site for lawsuit. Bet you it was either in the Top 3 stories because that's where the purging numbers are coming from. And from that point of view, it will risk their reputation, which I don't know how since they were running the fanfiction scene since the last couple of years. There aren't any other fanfiction site that can top them as of yet.

But there will be. 1998 called and they want their internet back. FF.net does the minimum for users. Readers or authors. It won't be hard to build something with a decent search function and a few more reader/writer amenities. Better icons, ability to link to outside sources, ability to link to other stories within the site that aren't just fanfic.... Basically, a deviantart for writers. And frankly, I'm surprised DA hasn't done it yet.

The users drive the site. You screw the users, and they'll leave the site. All they need is a better place to go. And each purge brings that competition closer and closer.

The internet is really blowing up with this kitten that FFnet is pulling. Got some information on who is behind this insane purging that's going on -

Critics United

I've seen their name mentioned now and again over the last few years, and it's always been attached to some harassment of FFnet users.

I'm still in kind of shock and horrified at all this that is going on. Reading is one of the greatest loves of my life, tied right up there with writing. All those stories that I'll never be able to read now...that I won't even know what I've missed because they are already gone...

This is pretty smart of them, and actually makes me feel a little better to know that others are already jumping up and standing forward to take in disenchanted FFnet users. If I actually had any real working knowledge of how to create, code, and run a fanfiction-based website I would do it in a heartbeat.

The internet is really blowing up with this sh*t that FFnet is pulling.

^ This. Absolutely, this.

I knew it!!!

They are always reporting stories. Always. And they are so biased and arbitrary. Such bullies.

I thought if they admins were using a list of reported stories then it had to be from those people.

They are ignorant and dreadful. And they will derail that site just to have them follow their rules. And they show their weakness by deleting countering posts.

Well, there's the answer. It's not a lawsuit. It's someone crazy over rules. And there's no telling how far they will go.

FF.net is just a database. Nothing more. All it will take is better database to fill in this gap and authors and readers will go there in droves.
