Its a move thats seen on kung fu, which influenced a lot of Asian cinema (especially Hong Kong cinema), which makes sense why its seen in anime.

Heres a video of a Shaolin monk performing it.

Definitely, and I think it's also especially telling when you look at the way HachiAnn (Hachimaru x Ann) was being built up in Samurai 8, and how they parallel off of NaruSaku in more occasions than one too. Especially when it pertains to the way certain scenes are paneled out in the manga.

Like these:

Good observation. Those panels look almost traced directly from iconic manga panels.

The "rivalry" line from the Last always struck me as very odd because it answered a question (in a very poor way) that really didn't need to be answered at the time.

NaruSaku was already 6 feet under at the time and all it accomplished was making Naruto look petty and puts all their interactions in the manga in a worse light.

It was a throwaway line that was never brought up again, so why even bring it up to begin with?

At that stage, I wouldnt say narusaku was six feet under, only strangely sidelined. The movie author had to really kill it, considering so much of the manga hammered in the fact that Naruto really loves Sakura.

That particular plot-point in The Last was not only lazy writing, but it also made Naruto look like scumbag. I mean, really? Lie about your feelings and worse, for rivalry? Even though your rival couldnt give a damn about her?

The only thing it would accomplish was to make Sakura look a bit better for rejecting Naruto for many years. Oh, and ofcourse, fits the narrative that Hinata was always The One and Only True Love.

From this article here https://www.animenew...omic-con/.94186

Mari Morimoto:
So the fans wanted Naruto to get together with Sakura?

Well, there's definitely camps of fans who felt that way, and there were also those that were very happy he ended up with Hinata. But there were quite passionate opinions on both sides!

I almost caused a rift in my own household too, because my wife was very upset also that Naruto didn't get together with Sakura. In fact, she complained quite vehemently to me!

Jo Otsuki:
Quite few of the female staff at Studio Pierrot that produces the anime, apparently were also upset.

Whoah. So how did you handle that, especially with your wife?

I tried to defuse the situation by assuring my wife that SHE was actually the model for Hinata. (laughs)

As you were saying that, I thought, I wonder if your family life was more like Hinata and Naruto's family or Sasuke and Sakura's? (everyone laughs)

Masashi Kishiimoto: Well it might not actually be like either. My wife is quite strong as well, she's a strong character.

Oh, so kind of like Sakura!

So I think my wife might secretly realize that Hinata wasn't really the model for her (laughs)

Thanks for that, I must have forgotten about the last part of that interview. However, it seems like he said he thinks it would lead to tension in the house, but it was fine for the time being. In either case, I take his interviews even less seriously than the manga ending. There was that other interview, where the guy next to him said his favourite character was Hinata, and Kishis reply was you like big bosomed girls? Barf.

Remember that before writing it he was given the scenes from the anime staff gave them. Which were all the filler Hinata scenes they made in the anime.

That always felt that the staff were trying to protect their movie while letting any of them get the blame if it flop by giving the role to a respected third party writer. Then molding him into their way of thinking. Even then you still have the contradictions and problems the movie had.

One thing that always struck me as funny was how they essentially stole the Sakura/ Ino rivalry to kill narusaku. The part where Sakura explains Naruto pursued her because of his rivalry with Sasuke. That explanation makes no sense, its just lazy plagiarism.

Edit: spelling

That whole comment from Kishi never really sat well with me, it was always a rather odd thing and really didn't set a great precedent as an author.

Some of the things he said after the ending was so cringe. I feel like hes someone whod see the world like Andrew Tate. Oh, a woman giving up on her feelings, thats wrong, shes low value!

Hello person who hasn't been on since before I joined this site. Did you enjoy the one-shot?

1. Her daughter may have some daddy issues, but she is still the most likeable of the new main cast. Mitsuki, Orochimaru's son is just Sai with worshiping Boruto being his entire character; he is the second most positively received. Kawaki is Sasuke but the author's avatar this time. And, Boruto is a spoiled Naruto with behavior you can see a lot in fanfic that try to 'fix' Naruto and make him better; IE he whines and has hissy fits non-stop while thinking he better and more morally right than anyone else. Comparatively, Sarada is Sakura 2.0  with all her flaws removed (not saying that is a good thing,) her daddy issue are understandable as well as being delt with quickly unlike Boruto's which just drag on, and she has a goal of being Hokage. Comapred to her teammates' wants: to be her top enforcer because Boruto thinks Sasuke is cool, Mitsiki's just continuing to worship Boruto, and Kawaki's...something something kill Boruto which if he wasn't so stupid I be very supportive of.

It also helps that she is the best parent of the main cast, besides Orochimaru: Sasuke literally avoided his family for 12 years, Naruto neglected his to focus on his job, and Hinata passively allowed her family situation to get worse.

Granted Hinata having everything she ever wanted given to her and still does nothing probably hasn't helped her. When her defenders normally relied on pity because she was clearly the most oppressed character ever.

2. I always took that statement to be something his editors and assistance said in arguments to convince him to go with nH/SS. "Kishimoto-sensei, Sakura can't abandon her love for Sasuke or the fans will see her as a terrible woman." Not helped that is also the clear line of thought that exist in the Last. It is what Sakura's speech to Naruto boils down to. He said it in an interview because that's what he was convinced his fans believed, and what the Last was based on. Of course that backfired, especially in Japan. Of course, it not who said it first but is heard saying it that gets the blame, and he really should have never said it in the first place.

I didnt read the one-shot, I feel like Minakushi is narusaku-baiting. Ive been burnt too badly perhaps.

1. Thanks for the breakdown of Baruto, I dont follow it closely. I just meant Sakura, a girl who wanted love her whole life, ended up with an incomplete family.

2. Perhaps Kishi was influenced from other people, but ultimately, hes responsible for what he did. Nobody wouldve believed me if I went back in time and I told people that the author literally handed the ending of their own manga to an animation studio.

Hullo everybody, its been a very, very long time. Good to see people are still here!

Ive been feeling nostalgic recently and Ive jumped back into reading about NS. Just some thoughts:

1. I cant help but feel like Sakuras increased popularity was partially because people have become more sympathetic. Her daughter has issues. Shes in limbo, both a single mother, but not technically single (so it isnt like shes free to find someone in her life). Naruto lied to her about liking her. She came from nothing and ended up with nothing. Maybe that kind of life resonates with the now older fandom?

Meanwhile, Hinata seems like shes currently living a privileged life with everything. People dont feel bad for her anymore, shes no longer the poor girl in the background. The stuff that made her seem interesting isnt there anymore.

2. Theres always been an undercurrent of misogyny, but its more apparent after the ending. Kishmoto saying how a woman who changes who she likes is terrible. Wait, what?

Dam, you make good points
I forgot about the interview
Also the thing about Sakura's popularity is also bs because she is the most popular female in Naruto, Japanese fans were so confused when he said she "wasn't popular"

Thanks.

Well, there's actual popularity, and then there's perceived popularity. Actual popularity is hard to find (polls aren't very accurate when it comes to determining opinion, they're influenced by what he call "self selection bias").

Kishimoto listens to the perceived popularity. He works in the manga industry, he's surrounded by otaku who love "waifu" characters, ofcourse he's going to think Hinata is more popular than she is.

There's no excuses to mislead fans for 15 years
Now I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with what he said, but Kishimoto is a pathetic excuse of a human being, so I understand why people have such emotions

He technically didn't mislead the fans for 15 years, he said he did 'consider' narusaku, but then changed his mind because if Sakura changed her love interest from Sasuke to Naruto, she would be a "terrible woman". (But it's ok if Naruto, a man, does the same thing).

Later on in his interviews, he essentially retconned his own previous interview, and said all the narusaku parallels were to "deliberately mislead" the audience. (Why? For the lols?)

In the other interview, he said Hinata acknowledged Naruto first, and although Sakura acknowledged Naruto as well, he felt bad for Hinata. (A poor attempt to hide his misogyny).

Then there's the other interview where he said he didn't know how SS got together. Planned for a long time? Ha!

Now we hear that Sakura's parents weren't even shown in the manga because she wasn't popular. Gee, I wonder what else Kishimoto had to take away from her because of her poor popularity.

Every time he does an interview, he comes up with a different story. I can't wait to see what comes next.

Would someone be able to post the interview or a link to the interview? That would be much appreciated!

Here: http://trang95.tumbl...kishi-interview

Go to this link to see the video: http://video.fc2.com...1412144qrFcrym/

Go to this link to see the summary of the video above: http://tieba.baidu.com/p/3466021866

I can’t confirm the translation of the summary of the video, so if you don’t believe this one, go to the website, and find your own translator.

1.When Kishimoto first created Naruto he was inspired by a roadside ramen stall, he wanted to write about a youth eating ramen. his theme is considered questionable, bujt in the end it still became serialized while under doubts.

2.The fourth’s appearance was inspired by carelessly jumbling up kiba and akamaru’s combination. and so naruto father’s image was set.

3.Before the chunnin exams, Kishimoto originally wanted to draw a few more missions, but to ask him to illustrate the whole ninjaverse at one go, kishi says it is very stressful to have to do so many characters, so he asked his assistant for help, and the assistant created Lee using reference from Jackie Chan.

4.In Akatsuki Kishimoto’s fav is Hidan. Kishi was told that the image of Shikamaru smoking can’t possible be animated on TV, but Kishi did it anyway. He tried to make Hidan look not as intidimating

5.Kishi feel that Jiraiya’s death was spectacular, therefore if he was edo tensei, it would be hard to draw naruto’s reaction. that’s why jiraiya did not re-appear.

6.Kishi is troubled by Sakura’s popularity among the readers. While he was drawing covers, it was easy drawing naruto and sasuke, but for sakura kishi have to spend more time re-drawing and adjusting, worrying that he might draw her ugly. sakura’s family is not revealed because of popularity reasons, but hinata with low number of appearances were consistently popular with the readers, kishi once had the idea to change hinata to the heroine.

7.he let neji die for naruto and hinata to be closer, that’s how hinata brought her daughter to visit his grave in chapter 700. naruto’s son boruto and neji is the same meaning, this is all intended early on.

8. before naruto KO enemies kishi would use several different angle shots to show the same move, this is inspired by jackie chan’s martial arts film. also when doing KO scenes kishi don’t like to draw the character faces, he feel that revealing faces will dimish the impact of the body moving and the artwork.

9.At the end when Naruto and Sasuke fight, the original intention is that they finish while holding hands, but kishi changed his mind and cut their hands, making a more gory ending.

10.When NARUTO ends, Kishi introduces next year’s movie and naruto exibition 2015, revealing that orochimaru, kabuto, and lesser characters will be re-appearing in the boruto series, to finish the main plot. then kishi says he will be relaxing for the time bring, call an assistant to discuss about the new series. it is unclear whether the new series will still be centered around ninjas or around a totally new theme.

EDIT: A translator i trust, also said Kishi said this:

1)Kakashi got more popular than Naruto so he had to decrease his appearance
2)This 15 years he suffered because of Sasuke and Sakura

3)To make Hinata look more like Naruto’s heroine, Neji had to die like a cupid (to which the interviewer caution, can we air this??)

Okay guys, step back from this for moment, and actually analyze the reception we have been getting from this film. Because I keep reading inaccurate information on this forum. Of course I understand everyone here hating it, that's obvious, yet I want to know the general census. However this is proving more a problem, mostly due to the fact that everyone on this site seems really bias. Every time I read anything good brought about the film on this forum, it is always counter with a negative or an excuse. Could this film actually be good, and we're letting our own sorrow-ness and hatred blind us to it?

Now don't get me wrong, story wise...this movie seems dumb. But since I have not seen it, I will give it the benefit of the doubt, and will wait for accurate information rather he say or she says from people on this forum. The problem lately is that a lot members are saying things, though do not give much evidence to support. So I really want to know the true reception of this film, cause if it is truly well receive, then that's that. I just want to know for the sake to just have a better understanding how other fans view this. Heck, personal people who have actually seen it (illegally or not) will also be cool, if it hasn't already.

You mean really biased?

The true reception of this film has been discussed thoroughly throughout the last 100 pages of this thread. The movie currently holds 2.86/ 5 stars on Yahoo JP by viewers. These ratings are still falling, despite many of the one-star ratings being deleted for no reason. There is no doubt at all that this movie is not received well in Japan outside of the NH fanbase.

I've seen the reviews on the Japanese Yahoo page. I'd like a few more sources to get a better sense of how this movie is being received. Does anyone here have any Japanese contacts who can confirm the people's general attitude towards the film. Also, links to other review site would help too, to see if they reflect whats going on on Yahoo. Finally, I heard about Japanese forums exploding with hate towards this film. Is that true?

The Yahoo ratings are rates by fans, which is the most accurate reflection of the general attitude to the film. These ratings are averaged from actual written reviews, not from just people voting.

Do you want anecdotes? Here: http://unburntmhysa....-fans-reactions

Unburntmhysa confirmed there were ~180 anti-Naruto threads.

Oh kitten, really? That's awesome. Do you know exactly what he said?

It was from a recent interview, the same one where he mentioned the NH kids don't have the Byakugan because he forgot, and he might make a third child to fix that. It was translated by TakL I believe.

Wow James, just wow, this is perfection. I was having a conversation with a guy who was arguing with you on your latest video and the last thing I told him was that I'm happy that NS didn't become canon because if it did what NH has done I'd be crushed. He asked me what I meant by that but I never answered because it's really pointless,he probably wouldn't listen to what I say, instead he'd just take apart my words and make them into a NH defense, but this quote from you was what I meant by my comment. Everything that has happened thus far was a domino effect, just a build up of sh*tty writing that came crashing down. SasuSaku happened and that lead to NH which then destroyed NaruSaku and NaruSasu core moments and bonds. It's ignored all unresolved issues with the manga and it's spit all over Naruto as a character. This movie makes him an emotional moron who see's women as trophies for him to win, and when said trophies are taken from him he sulks for days on end....seriously how can anyone like this NaruNo!!!!!

Wait so that is mission gear and she has no choice.....yeah no. She wore this gear all of Shippuden and if it was cold she'd still wear her traveling cloak. So this women has every right to dress properly. Sakura should have also worn a cloak too.

Shippuden Hinata

No matter what anyone tells me this is the image I will see when they defend The Last XD

No, actually, NH happened and so Kishimoto slapped Sakura onto Sasuke to keep her away from Naruto. Also, Sasuke needs a womb for his child.

Even Kishi says he had no idea how SS happened.

In all honesty, i may be okay with the ending if wasn't for the fact that SS happened. Not only is insulting to the characters and story of the series, but it is insulting to the concept of love in all forms. It doesn't make sense in the context of the story, nor in the context of other stories about love and forgiveness. It is horrible beyond belief, and the fact that fans wanted to happen, and praised the fact that it happen, makes me sick. That, at least to me, killed the series for me. That is when I realize this "romance" subplot was just a terrible mistake, and Kishimoto just didn't know how to do a love story at all, or even how red herrings work. Still respect Kishi for working on something for nearly fifteen years, but, seriously man, the whole SS is incredibly dumb. At least for NH it gives shy readers inspiration that they could get what they want if they actually try, yet for SS.... there is no moral.

So to answer your question, I think the reason why we don't criticize SS as often as NH is because I like to believe that most of us just force our selves to believe it did not happen. Cause it really shouldn't have.

NH is all about a man who uses women as a trophy for his pissing contest, and a girl who values a boy noticing her over the life of her little sister.

Hinata stays up all night before the mission to rescue Hanabi to knit her scarf. I kid you not.

wasn't my idea. I wish the info would have just stayed in this forum :/

The info is on this forum. I posted it, it's on page 922.

The original source is here.

Hinata is the only one who saw Naruto trying hard from the beginning and cheered for him.
Naruto knows that no matter how things don’t go well you’re cool as long as you try hard and never give up.
Sakura also realizes that in the middle, but I felt sorry for Hinata who was there from the beginning if she isnt reciprocated (lol).
でも別に二人の恋愛話に僕はあまり思い入れがなくて(笑)、その話を描くつもりはなかったんです。

Note that in an earlier interview, Kishimoto said he didn't want Sakura to change her love interest half way through the story because he thought it would make her "a terrible woman". He's just using the "I pitied Hinata" argument to cover up his own misogyny.

The fact that such comments came from Japanese fans speak volumes. I suppose you, ramenanmitsu and many others that are familiar with the culture would understand...

In RTN, majority are satisfied, no one claim it as fraud, no one complaint that it doesn't make sense.

In this movie, it's exactly the other way around. I also heard that the refund policy is no longer applicable? Not sure if it's true or not, but that's quite rare actually --as far as I can remember, do correct me if I'm wrong...

Customers are usually treated in high regards. Especially for cinemas, as far as I know, they do provide some mechanism to refund (there's certain T&C though...). That's how much they appreciate their customers.

Those people who claimed that this movie is a box office success, please hold your guns and see the numbers that will come in the coming weeks. Box Office Mojo typically provides accountable figures. Only time will tell. Here's a reference how RTN did last time (http://www.boxoffice...DTONINJANARUT01)

For now, it tells us that the quality of the movie is below average compared to other shippuden movies(?) and the audience are by large disappointed.

I remember a fan who flew from somewhere (presumably Korea) who seemed upset because he/ she thought RtN was about Charasuke and got upset when it wasn't. XD But point taken, most people knew illusionary world =/= canon.

This movie on the other hand, allowed no cancellation refunds, featured a lot of Sasuke and Kakashi promotions and voice actor appearances, only for it to be a Hinata movie. Such a lovely girl, who stays up all night before the mission to rescue her sister to knit a scarf in hopes a boy will notice her.

The lose ends of the manga are completely forgotten, the hero and real heroine go through character assassination, and the story literally ends with cheesy midair kids complete with sparkles.
