The only time I don't really like it is when an entire shows hook is fanservice. Big harem fanservice shows are the the only genre I can't watch at all. If it's in anything else I don't mind but if I wanted to get off I would watch porn not anime.

Yes, I agree. I meant that you find that kind of thing more often in video games than in Japanese comic-books.

All of those images are cringe-worthy. The "Robyn Hood" thing made me rolling my eyes up. Yes. That IS the kind of clothes that people wore in that age, especially in the cold English weather. Have you also noticed their perfect hairdoes, their spotless faces and that their breasts are huge and firm?

and how Robyn Hood and Cindy have no nipples? Seriously, with those plunging necklines at the very least their areolae would be visible. I guess neckbeards prefer Barbie dolls to humans, huh?

Leaving aside that there certainly is a kind of geeks that preffer fictional characters to human beings... I do not think that is the reason of the lack of nipples of that picture. A good number of entertainment-makers apparently thinks that censors and moral guardians will leave them alone if they draw naked characters but they omit features such like nipples, public hair, genitals...

Barbie Doll Anatomy

It may sound stupid or hypocritical, and I will not judge whether it is or not, but I would wage that is because that drawing is like it is.

A while ago a friend of mine and I watched the first episodes of Thundercats -the first series-. In the first episode the characters show up naked, but displaying Barbie Doll Anatomy. It may look ridiculous, but I guess that since the characters were humanoid animals and were covered in fur, a lack of nipples or genitals added to dissimulate the fact of they were naked. And since the show WAS aimed at children, showing genitals would be disturbing and would bring plenty of troubles to the cartoon-makers.

I think it's ridiculous. Why even call it fanservice, as if it is something that appeals to all fans, male and female?

Why not just call it malefanservice. Or gratuitousfleshservice. Or pantyshots. Or nipslips. Or something that actually indicates what it is and who it is for rather than calling it something as inocuous as fanservice.

Because you know what's fanservice for me, a girl? Showing a female lead looking powerful and kicking ass. That's what I want to see.  Not her panties.

(I am glad that Kishimoto is so protective and respectful of Sakura in that regard. And honestly, if he ever did something that denigrated her character or objectified her in a sexual way, I'd probably be done with the series.)

We have another thread atm about explicit content in mangas, and I see "fanservice" as just a notch down on the spectrum. It's no different. It just shows a little less skin. And ultimately it desensitizes the reader and forces him/her to accept this kind of soft-core skin, this sexual objectification of the characters — even the insignificant ones — as something somehow improves the quality of the story.

And if we read stories that have an underlying theme that it's okay to take sexually take advantage (even the panty shots) then what does that say about real life society and choices?

As more women/girls read manga, and as more stories are opened up to international audience through the internet, and as more writer/illustrators grow up and recognize those audiences, the was token fanservice is handled is bound to change.

Sometimes I hate fanservice in anime, they overdid what the story didn't include in the manga. And also I hate harem-ecchi manga, it's like they forced the fanservice into the whole story. But sometimes I do like fanservice :D

There is Free! Iwatobi Swimming Club, which I haven't watched. But I heard there's so much fanservice that it can seem like that's the entire point sometimes. The fanservice is also apparently meant to appeal to a female audience, which is unusual...

Curious what others think of this anime in particular. Seeing how this anime seemed pretty popular just six months ago, I wonder if we'll be seeing similar material in the future.

I don't condone objectifying either gender, but would have to admit as a human and female I can't help but find that sort of fanservice...interesting. Depending on how it's handled, though.

It's gross, ridiculous, objectifying, and sexist. It's even worse when the bodies are so unnatural. Not many girls have boobs like Orihime, Lucy, or practically ever woman in One Piece.

I thought Kubo (isn't he referred to as "titty kubo") was worse, but then I hate One Piece's art so much that I've never made it more than 5 pages in. So I can't vouch for much of what they do. Yoko used to complain about the ridiculous proportions on the hips in One Piece.

So I am pretty sick of fanservice. When it was sparsely used or in a light-hearted and comedic fashion it was tolerable or even laugh-worthy. Now... well, I can not care less if someone catches me seeing a seventies children anime like Mazinger-Z, Gatchaman, Casshan, Yamato or Sally the Little Witch. Yes, the animation looks dated and it is a kids show, but I find it entertaining, so who cares? But I would not be caught dead watching some modern fanservice show. It is one thing being an adult that watches children shows knowing what they are and appreciating them because they are. It is a very different issue being an adult that watches shows full of scenes where teenagers kids with oversized breasts that show up constantly naked or showing their underwear.

I qualified mine because I cannot say it would never work in any circumstance. That's the one area where I can imagine it not being too awful, but I don't have any examples. It wouldn't take much work for me to be convinced.

Go Nagai introduced fanservice in manga and anime, much to the ire of parents and teachers in the sixties and seventies. Still in those years fanservice used to be more... subtle. You had to be attentive and be looking for it to realize that in one scene, when a female character tripped, you could see her panties for one second. There were few fanservice series, and even then usually it was used for comedic moments and it was not the point of the show.

I can't do panty shots. Even the small, hard to see ones. It's like choosing between degrees of unpleasantness. There's bad and worse, and not much else.

I can't help but feel like a bit of a hypocrite. I wouldn't say I approve of fan service (and most of it really is unrealistic to the point of being ridiculous), yet there have been cases where males were treated the same way in fanworks (drawings, fanfictions, etc), and...I partook in enjoying them. (Though again, depends on how it was handled. Sometimes (a lot?) it was just like "really now? no one does that...")

You can enjoy fanservice and still think it is problematic. No shame in that. About Free!, it seems to me they are halfnaked for a reason there? It's a swimming anime, after all. :/ I don't know if it's problematic because I haven't seen it, but I like that they kind of flipped the tables around. >:)

Hehe.

Well, again, I haven't watched the anime, but seen clips and screenshots. The male anatomy is pretty detailed (a tad overdone, maybe?), and they have scenes from certain angles that direct your eyes in certain areas. Not sure if it's all that extreme or not, though, I'd have to watch it.

Obviously just having a shirtless guy isn't fanservice...at least I don't think so.

I don't typically go looking for fanservice type fanworks, but do find some of it interesting...particularly written works. There was this one fanfiction I read (mostly skimmed, really) solely for the fact that it was about guys in their underwear. But I actually didn't like the fanfiction itself and will never read it again, because it was about characters being unknowingly manipulated into situations where they were being taken advantage of visually. Not something I could commend.

Meh, I don't really care that much about fan-service to begin with.

I've noticed that some people take interest in that swimming anime called "Free!". Which is fine. If you ask me there should be more anime like free to counterbalance the amount of fan-service anime that caters to men. All I'm saying is that both sexes are capable of either enjoying it, not caring about it, or hating it, depending on the person in question.

On the subject of Western Comic Books, I never really found comic characters to be sexy at all. I just view them as your standard body builder physique that you commonly see with most superheroes. Most bodies in comics are unrealistic yet I don't view superhero body types as definitive canon because of art-style differences between artists who draw the pictures in those issues and the fact that the proportions of body parts (and sometimes skin color) don't matter when movie makers pick an actor who they feel is best suited for the comic book character role in the first place.

To me, Superhero bodies are more vaguely human shaped rather than titillating. They just look more like body builders with super powers rather than real people. Superheroes look to generic for me to consider one of them attractive. The only thing I care about when it comes to a superheroes appearance is the design of their costume they fight crime in on a daily basis.

Whelp, that's my perspective on the subject in question.

I do agree with most of what you are saying, but as a big-boobed skinny girl, I must ask that you not write us off! For it not the size of the boob drawn, but the position the boob is drawn in! (Shakespeare wrote that google it it's true)

I know, but the boobs aren't just big. The whole body composition is impossible, and they are unrealistically drawn. This is just something I quickly found and it's just the anime, but here. That's not what boobs are shaped, no matter the size. Then the middle is super thin, and her hips are wide. I think it would be fine if just one of them had this body-shape(because there is a thing called hourglass), but almost every woman in this series look like this. The men gets a lot more diversity. At first I thought it was Oda' artstyle, but I've been reading it for a while now and I don't think it's a coincidence.

I'm sorry if I offended you, I didn't intend to shame big-busted girls. Now I also checked up on Lucy, and she seems to be the most realistic girl, of those I mentioned. But that manga is also the one with the most vulgar fanservice x) I read it before.

Meh...that's all I can say about it. As a guy who's into women, I don't mind it so long as it's...'appropriate' to the situation. I've never understood why the girls in a lot of anime wear....practically next to nothing. There's a difference between revealing some skin in a desert to stay a little cooler, and charging into a full scale war wearing a bikini...

Imagine if there were an anime where there was a girl with big boobs who never showed them off and people didn't comment on them... Sigh. That would be the day. But I guess that in FMA, most of the females aren't really flat. Winry and Hawkeye are pretty well endowed, but they never wear anything to show off their breast size. And I suppose that's the reason that people don't notice how big they are, because no one comments on it andthey never wear anything to show it off.

Aside from that, though, SERIOUSLY. What is it with people in animes always commenting on girl's big chests, especially to their faces?? That's just something you don't do unless you're either really close with that person or you're just a creep -_- Anyway, I agree with those of you who said it's objectifying, and honestly, it's kinda creepy, especially when I go to conventions and see body pillows with a half clothed, enormous chested cartoon girl, who's both a sexual figure but at the same time totally innocent.

Oh yeah, that's something else that annoys me about anime girls! They're all sexy and stuff, except for their faces are always so young looking and innocent. They don't usually have what people often think of as a seductive face. Take this for example. http://www.ebay.com/...6-/160585478680

THE GIRL IS FREAKING BLUSHING. I just hate how they try to make the girls so innocent but they're not, and... gosh, it just annoys me. And creeps me out that people would get a pillow case of a drawing like that. Ehh, well, that's just me though. Fanservice is objectifying and I would do just fine without any of it. Even fanservice for girls is usually poorly done and just makes me wanna barf. Just because it's handled so... awkwardly.
