It never made sense to me as to why Gai was getting big moments via him fighting Kisame two times, fighting Obito and then having a grand showdown with Madara. He does all of that for Gai, but makes Lee chopped liver in comparison. Why bother going through all of that growth in part one if it was going to lead to nowhere?
Why did Kishimoto ditch Rock Lee and start focusing on Gai instead?

Everyone was ditched for Naruto and Sasuke. Really Guy only had three fights (I think) in total. In fact the entire cast falls off the radar, especially during the war arc where Naruto and Sasuke just plow through Obito and Madara's forces all on their own.

Yeah, it defeats the whole "new generation succeeding the old generation" theme of Naruto in regards to Lee when his master takes away all of his potential fights and we as the readers are denied the opportunity to witness Lee's growth. At the very least, Lee should've had the chance to fight Madara after Gai was defeated.

I don't agree with this. Kakashi basically had his own arc, and since Guy was his rival and also knew Obito he was central for a while.Everyone was ditched for Naruto and Sasuke. In fact the entire cast falls off the radar, especially during the war arc where Naruto and Sasuke just plow through Obito and Madara's forces all on their own.
To me Lee was kinda like Sakura. They both had epic moments(both in FoD, Lee vs Gaara and Sakura vs Sasori) and people myself included believed they'd get more but they were tossed aside for hundreds of chapters.Yeah, it defeats the whole "new generation succeeding the old generation" theme of Naruto in regards to Lee when his master takes away all of his potential fights and we're denies the readers the opportunity to Lee's growth. Because Lee story was complete like Neji's by the end of Part 1. Gai is older and stronger Lee, and he is also kakashi rival which makes him more interesting. Also why deal with the knock off when you can have he original? Lee is Gai's apprentice so all his mannerism are more often then not from Gai.

Because there is no way you will be adequately able to focus on every character, particularly in conjunction to Naruto.
Besides the Team 7 Bond execution on every front, I think the other significant flaw in the manga was Kishimoto relying too much on the Naruto Sasuke Bond and not using the other bonds more.
That said, in part one, Lee gets significantly more time than Gai, (Lee vs. Sasuke, Lee vs. Gaara, Lee vs. Member of the Sound 4), while Gai only has a short fight with Kisame, so the argument only holds true for the latter half of the manga. Lee also participates in the first Kisame fight. So the above is also right, Lee is developed in part one.
One further argument in agreement with another above is to keep Gai and Kakashi relatively equal, as Gai would be a poor showed rival if he didn't demonstrate anything that was close to Kakashi.
I think most of all, he was the best person to showcase the eight gates. That it resulted in certain death, and with the thought of teachers before students, the last fight with Madara makes case on a Gai selection. And on the Kisame fights, that he was already established as his former opponent makes the repetition a neat showdown.
To conclude, Rock Lee wasn't ditched, merely, Rock Lee wasn't chosen. Gai fit better for Kishimoto's purposes.
Kishi can't write for kitten. Go read Marineford arc in One Piece, to see how to give all characters a chance to shine. Stop riding that Kishi Bandwagon.

Lee had so much more weight behind his character than Gai since we already knew what Lee had been through. We only knew of Gai's backstory as he was kicking Madara six ways to Sunday (Which I'm glad we got since I cried a bit during the Dai sacrifice scene) But Lee is a better-established character.
Plus Lee had the two best fight scenes in the manga. Against Gaara and Kimimaro. He could have unleashed hell on Madara and then when Madara was about to murk him, Gai could have stepped in. Or they could have tag teamed like they did against Naruto in that filler arc.

While writing well is subjective, writing successfully isn't, and writing successfully tends to be because you either write well, or write what people crave.
I dislike One Piece, but I won't deny Odo's talent any more than Kishi's.
It's Oda. Still doesn't change the fact that kishi's writing is garbage.

Plus Oda is a better writer than Kishi I mean what will Luffy do when its comes to Black Beard let him go after he is the reason Ace is dead cause even Oda knows that would be stupid.
and we have to rmember if they are an Uchiha then they get a free pass and free power-ups, can't forget that and if your not an Uchiha well then your trash, if your female then you only job is to love and worship the mighty SASUKE UCHIHA!
Once Ki ninja is done and some others I will have Pan and Videl in the Naruto world, why not Gohan well he would one shot them all after all Pan well spolier for far later Sasuke almost kills Videl, Pan does not have Super Saiyan, then just add what Gohan did to Cell, only Pan does it to Sasuke.
