iPod for your music, instant noodles, binoculars for sights..

You're going to Japan and you are taking noodles? lulz.

Umm, gotta bring the uncensored porn to sell, iPod, a sack of illicit substances, clothes, and deodorant. Maybe some other little knickknacks. Oh and lots of money. Oh jea.

Bear in mind your average American (that is, GSM) cellphone won't work here. Some do if they have the proper technology but even then it only works if your carrier is a partner with docomo or Softbank.

Also, when you first get to a train station you'll want to buy (depending on what line runs through there) a Pasmo or Suica card. Those are prepaid train passes that you recharge in the station--Pasmo starts with a 500 yen deposit that you can get back if you turn your card in. They're a billion times easier than dealing with train tickets, since fare varies from place to place.
