Salmonella is only a real danger in North America where Egg Batteries are common and the chickens poop on each other it is less common in places such as Japan and Europe where the chickens are treated better.

If you want to try, you CAN try out organic or free range eggs. They are a little more expensive, but the risk of salmonella is significantly lower:

QUOTE
A recent British survey found that about about a quarter of caged hen populations tested positive for salmonella, versus less than 5% of organic flocks and 6.5% of free-range flocks. In fact, the amount of salmonella contamination was directly parallel to the size of the flocks. Huge industrial chicken farms housing 30,000 or more birds had four times the level of bacteria of the smaller flocks mandated by U.K. organic standards.

Obviously, if you want to eat your eggs raw or undercooked, free-range, organic eggs are much safer (although the risk is not zero). They also appear to be a lot more nutritious.

Again, it has to be emphasised that the risk of salmonella in organic and free range eggs is NOT zero, but they are much safer than their battery equivalents if you really want to try eating raw/undercooked eggs (at your own risk). If you have a farm anywhere near you that lets its hens roam over a wide area, you can check them out as well if they sell eggs to visitors.

With all that said, the UK has strict organic standards, and I'm not sure how strict the US equivalent is. sweat.gif

Chapter 5 Comments --Click here to view--

Poor Hachiken. I loved his tearful reaction on page 4. XD;

I had never heard of Ban'ei races before, so it was really interesting to read about them.

Komaba is really blunt, isn't he? It looks like the next chapter could confirm my suspicions that something happened between Hachiken and his family. Maybe his parents tried to force him down a path, such as becoming heir to the family company?

It's a shame we'll have to wait for two weeks before the next chapter, but I'm sure it will be worth the wait!

・Lol, that Buddha-like guy is the best! Nakajima-san, was it?
・It would be great to know why Hachiken choose this agricultural high school over some elite one is Sapporo.
・I already want to know the story behind that silver spoon!!

For the most part, there's really no difference between factory and organic farming, as many companies in the US that claim to feed organics really don't and use mass-production techniques (read Omnivore's Dilema for more details).

Anyway, brilliant update as always. Nice to see some of Hachi's backstory. My mom will freak when I show her the piglets. She loves pigs and think they are just adorable.

Not Muslim, but it's a Filpino boy's "rite of manhood." Not really a huge deal, since one can get the surgery done in a hospital and it still counts.

Aw, such an adorable two-parter. To think that such an accidental discovery will end up causing quite a bit of growth for Hachiken. Looks like he may've started a tradition now!

Yes Arakawa is an amazing author. Brotherhood was the best anime I've ever seen.
