Hey, all!

This is a blog where I will post updates for my novel series, "Mages of the North" which can be read for free at this link: https://www.wattpad....dventure-begins

I write primarily for the fun of it, and after taking a long break from it, I'm trying to get back into the groove of things.

"Mages of the North" is a story that is inspired by Naruto and a number of other games and shows, and features a story about three young mages setting off to explore a vast unknown world. Its time setting is late 1600's to early or mid 1700's, so you're looking at a pre-American Revolution sort of time period. This was specifically chosen to avoid the typical medieval theme that typically follows with similar stories. Soldiers of military forces will now use muskets, flintlock pistols, cannons, sabers, and other weapons of the time period, creating the need to develop new strategies the mages of the story will have to use to avoid dying from a gun shot wound.

The story is very mixed with great detail about the characters, their backgrounds, hobbies, and focuses a lot on world building as well. If the reader follows the story for long enough, they will eventually encounter a vast variety of animal life and naturally beautiful places described down to the smallest detail. However, they will also encounter horrors beyond what any typical fantasy story will delve into.

"Mages of the North" has some similarities with Naruto, but the story is very much its own. The main cast are made from a different cloth, though they share some similarities here and there.

If your heart still aches from the lie that was NaruSaku, this story offers a chance to pull yourself over that cradle and move on from it.

So, just recently I wrote out how magic works in the world. It's not too detailed and I'm still kind of working on it, but it's basically called the Blue Conduit. It's sort of like a secondary blood vein system that runs through the human body. The downside to this is I had to make it to where everyone can learn magic, but it's still better to do so at a younger age. After countless generations of mages being born, reproducing, dying off, mix and repeat, its gotten to the point where literally anyone can learn or use magic.

However, this knowledge is only known to the Mages Guild and if one starts trying to learn too late in life (usually mid-late teens or early twenties) they'll have a much harder time with it and will never be able to master whichever school of magic they're studying.

There are a few exceptions to this - primarily people who come from a long bloodline of nothing but mages that specialized in one particular school of magic. A sort of "genetically gifted" character if you will. Regardless of this, they will still have a hard time learning magic, but not as hard a time as someone who is just starting out.

A new chapter was just released today, and I'm planning to release a few more later on this week. Aiming for four in total, but we'll see how things go.

This has been done a million times before, but I'm going to add in a journal entry for the story every so often. This will give the reader a better idea of what's going through the mind of the main character.

Entry: 1

My name is Floris Fetcher; I found this journal down in the basement while brewing some potions and researching some new ingredients. All the pages were blank, and there was a pile of other journals in the room. I assume this was free to take, I doubt anyone will care if a blank book went missing.

Where do I begin? There's been so much activity for the past several weeks that it's hard to find a starting place. I guess I might as well start from the beginning just to recap all the madness that's happened.

Approximately four or five weeks ago, myself and my best friend, Alvis Era, left our old lives behind after fleeing from our home village of Two Creeks. Alvis had discovered something...I don't know how else to put it other than otherworldly. It was unlike anything we had ever seen before. There was some sort of a black substance that suddenly filled the nearby river, killing the land as it slowly made its way upstream...against the current.

The blackness killed everything it came into contact with. Any animal that tried drinking from the water died almost on the spot and the land itself decayed as the blackness moved onward. The trees, the grass, the swamp itself was dying. I was able to collect a sample and did what I could to stop it, but it was beyond my comprehension.

One-by-one I lost my Swamp Rats, my most important tools to learn what this stuff was. The wildlife that had once been so plentiful near our village vanished, seemingly into thin air, making it impossible to restock my supply.

As the swamp died, so too did our village. One-by-one our numbers fell, and there was nothing I could do to stop it from happening. None of my potions, even my strongest that I had kept in reserve did anything to negate the effects of the darkness that was slowly taking over the land. Eventually, Ajenna, my grandmother and the only family I had left succumbed and her soul departed to the next life.

With no choice, Alvis and I left our home behind and began our quest for the outside world. We had only ever heard stories of the outside world from the trader that came to our village every so often. Even though he told us all those wonderous stories, nothing could have prepared us for what we actually found!

This new world is so different compared to what we were used to. There were more people in our first few towns than either of us knew existed, roads and buildings made of stone, massive ships sailing across massive bodies of water, and not to mention the over abundance of food! To say the least, its been a real culture shock.

Luckily, however, I seem to be adapting at a reasonable rate. Alvis, on the other hand, is still having trouble leaving the world he once knew behind.

We travelled to a settlement called Mist City in search of the Mages Guild, which was my grandmother's final bit of advice to Alvis and myself. It was a bit much to take in all at once, but the guild has welcomed us with open arms and even sent a team to the swamps to learn more about what destroyed our village.

Everyone here has been so helpful to us. Etrix, the superior ranking here was one of the first to greet us and welcome us to the guild. However, the most helpful person here has been Elizabeth. She's a gorgeous young woman who has done what she can to help us with whatever needs to be done. She taught me about bartering a few days ago, and has even helped Alvis learn how to read a little. He's struggling, but she says he's making progress.

That being said, though, we met our third teammate as well. Her name is Kathrina, and she's extremely beautiful! She uses healing magic and was kind enough to demonstrate it to us. Her magic soothed and relaxed me and Alvis, taking away all of our aches and pains after our travels. She's very kind and has explained things to us in great detail. She's apparently supposed to be a historian, so she'll be very useful during our travels.

We've also met who will be our teacher or mentor. He goes by the name of "Flare" and is a member of the Elemental Guard. He wants us to meet tomorrow morning East of town, so I should probably wrap this entry up.

I will say one thing, though. I can't speak for Alvis, but despite how amazing this new world is...I do miss home. I do still feel a little homesick.

A comical part of the latest chapter:

Gong, Gong, Gong

The grandfather clock in the room chimed, sounding the alarm for Floris and Alvis to awaken from their slumber. It was a gift from Elizabeth after Floris had asked her how they would know when to wake up for their meeting with Flare. Already, he was starting to hate it and already knew why she had that evil grin on her face when he asked her about it.

Floris stared up at the ceiling with a very unamused look on his partially covered face, but slowly turned his attention to Alvis as he shot up in his bed and yelled, "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT RACKET?! MAKE IT STOP!"

Floris only remained silent for several long moments, trying to find the urge to climb out of bed and leave his warm comfortable covers. Eventually, however, he got tired of hearing the gonging of the clock and threw his covers off before going to the clock and trying to turn it off. It took some tinkering, but he eventually made it turn off.

Alvis, with his hair in a mess and a face that would put any overhung drunk to shame, stared straight ahead of him with his eyes barely open and said, "We never had any of that kind of devilry in our village. What the hell even is that?"

"I believe Elizabeth referred to it as an "alarm clock"." Floris replied, far from amused with the device.

"Yeah? Well, it's gonna be a "broken alarm clock" if it does that again." Alvis said.

Floris sighed heavily and turned around to walk to his chest where he kept his belongings. He knelt down on the floor and started collecting his stuff, "Flare said to meet him at six this morning, and it's five right now. That should give us enough time to eat some breakfast and meet him and Kathrina at the east entrance." He said, grabbing his leather armor and his belts. But after not hearing a word from Alvis for a little bit, he looked up to see Alvis passed out on his back again.

Floris rolled his eyes and started digging for something he could use to cover his ears. He managed for find two cotton balls and shoved them in his ears before standing back up and returning to the clock. He messed with the controls again, making the clock sound off again.

GONG, GONG, GONG, GONG, GONG, GONG, GONG

Alvis started to frantically search for something, eventually settling for his pillow, and threw it at the clock, "SHUT YER YAPPERING, I'M UP ALREADY!"

I'm currently writing the final chapter that acts as this books first "bell test". It's a similar concept, but it plays out a lot differently. A link will be posted soon.
