Well, I'm the Merchant Of Blue Death and I ship primarily Naruto and Sakura. I've an account on FF.Net under the same name and have a few stories with this pair. The latest and most well received story there is a little tale called Tip Of The Spear. I'll be the first to admit that it's not for everyone but it's different form whats being written now. In fact I've gone to the earliest days of fan fiction when not that much was known, such as Naruto's father was given the Name Arashi and Orochimaru was the big bad wolf at the door.

I'm older than the average person that ships or even writes fan fiction for an anime like this but it's what I like to do. I'm an anime fan that can remember Speed Racer shown the first time in the US in glorious black and white. Over the years my interest in anime and manga grew, at first to p**s off my friends that were die hard Marvel and DC fans and later because good stories began to filter over to America from Japan in the early 80's. My all time favorites are Akira, Full Metal Panic, Evangelion and of course Naruto, not the anime so much as the manga, RahXephon, and Gunslinger Girl are some of the many that I enjoy and still watch from time to time. One day I'll get around to writing for some of those as well.

Favorite pairings in Naruto are of course Lady Sakura and Lord Naruto, Ino and Shikamaru, Tenten and Lee as well as most canon pairs with the exceptions of N/H and S/S. Really what were they smoking when chapter 700 came out? Well one consolation is that we can give Naruto and Sakura the happy ending they worked so hard for.

About myself, I'm old but my mind is still young, I blame that on the fact that I spent twenty years in the US Navy and as I got older my co-workers, Shipmates really, stayed the same age, between 17 and 21. being around these folks kept my mind, my music and cultural tastes young. I've some college and am a few credits short of a BS in psychology but since I'm happy with my life I see no reason to go back to school. After reading what some of today's college students have passed off as a good story I'm afraid I'd tear apart the first English teacher I came across. My education is as I said some college but most is based on courses I took in the Navy to further my career. In elementary through High School I was a poor student, in fact I was not at the bottom but the bottom of most of my classes. Having said that, the standards were still high enough for me to still write a sentence without embarrassing myself using the wrong word because two or three words in our language sound alike.

With my writing, it's not a work of art and I will never claim it to be. It is, however, the best I can do and I can create a whole new world adventure and romance for my favorite characters. It's chance to make things right for star crossed couples. Naruto and Sakura of course but anyone that's fans of Evangelion know Asuka and Shinji were cheated out of their happy end as well. I think the reason I started writing for Naruto was because of how fifteen years of emotional and chronological investment with his story was tossed out the window for reasons even they, the creators, can't explain.

I try to set the characters in an AU, the same to some extent but different to a degree. I also try to tip the hat to earlier works when I can as well as liberally lacing each chapter with Easter eggs. One thing I try to do is keep Naruto true to himself, no matter how mature he gets or seems, he still has his, as Sakura would say, idiot moments. The Naruto and Sakura I write are based off of their post Wave arc personalities. Their at that point in canon to where they have a bond of trust and Sakura is starting to see Naruto as more than an annoying idiot that seems bent on ruining her attempts at being with Sasuke. In my stories she's usually already with him either by choice or by a marriage contract, the difference from canon is that she's actually happy that she's to be Naruto's wife. Their love is a strong one that can be tested and can come close to breaking but it's able to withstand anything in their way.

Sasuke on the other hand is a funny one to write for. To tell the truth, I hate him and his whole clan. Between his obsession with power and that clans power coming from the theft of other's hard work, I can't find a thing I like about any of them. That said, I can't just bash him at every turn either. Naruto wouldn't be happy with me if I treated his best friend and brother like that. So, I turn to older stories that had him as a loyal and trusted companion, teammate and brother. Sure, they have their moments but their as close as blood. I base their relationship on the one my best friend and I have. We've known each other since the summer before we started fourth grade, we've been friends ever since 1968, that's almost fifty years so I can see Naruto and Sasuke having a friendship that lasts as long or longer. While not self insertion you'll find pieces of me and those I know in each and everyone I write.

Having said all that, I know it's long but I'm old, sue me, I hope to make friends here and share some fo the things I've not even posted on FFN.

So, who has food?

Welcome! No worries about age - the Naruto fandom runs the spectrum!!!! In fact, I've always thought it was remarkable that Naruto trended toward such a wide audience - after all, it's writtten by a 43yo and has been ongoing as a franchise since '99. The audience for Naruto has basically grown up with it (especially if you were lucky enough to catch on when it started!). And I think we're in a unique time where our tastes can stay young while we grow older. My interest in anime/manga/mythology/storytelling has only grown, not diminished, and I find that there are lots of people/writers/musicians/artists/creators who feel the same way. Including Kishimoto.

There is so much great stuff out there now! How can manga/anime fans not continue in watching/reading?!? I think Naruto bridges a time when it was hard to get access to manga — and Japanese cartoons were unique and strange and different, and you had no guarantees about plot or even if the next episode would be shown! — to a time (now) when it's so easy it's ridiculous!

I haven't read your stories (I haven't had time to read much of anything lately) but I agree with your thoughts about keeping an AU Naruto in character with the main core of his manga character. It's like a challenge! And yes - Sasuke is a puzzling character when you dig a little deeper. I find myself wondering why Kishimoto didn't go more into Sasuke's story as a sympathetic character. It's all right there. But he really never gives the guy a break. Even in the manga when he ends up with Sakura, Sasuke never gets to be settled down. He never gets to enjoy being loved. He has to always be the anti-hero or foil-type. There always has to be tension between him and Naruto.

It's easy to hate Sasuke, and I completely understand why reader/viewers do. Sasuke's pretty crappy. But I appreciate when writers don't automatically bash him. There's so much more — just like Naruto's story — that isn't told in the manga.

That's why I love fanfic so much - there's always so much more to tell!

 Welcome!! Glad you've joined H&E!!
