Had a thought today, and wondered how other shounen jump movies were doing compared to Naruto the Last and Boruto.

So lets look at how they all did world wide compared to the Last.

1:Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train $503,000,000 (2535.3%)

2:Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie $159,800,000. (805.44%)

3:Dragon Ball Super: Broly  $122,700,000. (618.45%)

4:One Piece: Stampede  $94,700,000 (477.31%)

5:One Piece Z   $85,000,000 (428.43%)

6:One Piece Flim: Gold  $66,207,073 (334%)

7:Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection of Freeza  $64,800,000 (327%)

8:One Piece Strong World $61,200,000 (308.5%)

9:Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods $51,200,000 (258%)

10:My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission $47,020,000 (240%)

11:Boruto $39,500,000 (199.1%)

12:My Hero Academia: Two Heroes $33,400,000 (166.34%)

13:My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising $29,980,000 (151.1%)

14:Naruto the Last $19,840,000. (100%)

15:Gintama: The Final $17,252,960 (86.96%)

Only Gintama which pretty much a Japanese release only is the only one that did worse than the Last and only by 2.6 million in difference. Only the first two MHA did worse than the Boruto movie.

Now lets put the series numbers together and compare them to Naruto-Boruto.

1:Demon Slayer $503,000,000 (848%)

2:One Piece $307,107,073 (518%)

3:Dragon Ball $238,700,000 (402.26%)

4:Jujutsu Kaisen  $159,800,000 (269.3%)

5:MHA $110,400,000 (186.04%)

6:Naruto-Boruto $59,340,000 (100%)

7:Gintama $17,252,960 (29.1%)

I'll say this if I was a movie company I want Demon Slayer. I wouldn't care if I had Naruto-Boruto. Also, Dragonball, One Piece and MHA all have movies coming out this year.

And since Naruto big claim to fame was its Western (US) Fanbase let see how well it did in that.

First the opening:

Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train $21,234,994 (11839%)

Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie  $14,818,624 (8461.5%)

Dragon Ball Super: Broly $9,816,197 (5473%)

My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission $6,255,779 (3488%)

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising  $5,891,252 (2985%)

Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection of Freeza  $1,817,937 (1014%)

My Hero Academia: Two Heroes $1,388,499 (774.1%)

Boruto $380,419 (212.1%)

One Piece: Stampede $357,740 (199.44%)

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods  $296,414 (165.3%)

Naruto the Last $179,370 (100%)
One Piece Flim: Gold $50,241 (28%)

Only One Piece Gold did worse than The Last. Hell, Broly opened with lager numbers in the US compared to Japan.

Now in Total:

Demon Slayer $49,505,008 (9439.4%)
Dragon Ball Super: Broly $30,712,119 (5856.1%)
Jujutsu Kaisen $29,693,448 (5662%)
My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising $13,304,000 (2537%)
My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission  $12,271,658 (2340%)
Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection of Freeza $8,008,363 (1527%)
My Hero Academia: Two Heroes  $5,754,556 (1097.3%)
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods $2,553,002 (487%)
One Piece: Stampede  $1,298,528 (248%)
Boruto  $919,651 (175.4%)
Naruto the Last $524,451 (100%)
One Piece Film: Gold $423,593 (81%)

Italicized means the percentage improved. Gold actually did comparable to the last only about a hundred thousand in difference. Stampede and Battle of Gods that open worse then Boruto surpassed it.

Now put the IPs' movies together

1:Demon Slayer $49,505,008 (3428.1%)
2:Dragon Ball $41,273,484 (2858.1%)
3:MHA: $31,330,214 (2170%)
4:Jujutsu Kaisen $29,693,448 (2056.2%)
5:One Piece $1,722,121 (119.3%)
6:Naruto-Boruto $1,444,102 (100%)

Yeesh no one can beat the one Demon Slayer movie. Again, this is why they don't really care about Naruto anymore. Since anime took off due to streaming, their other IPs are doing far better then Naruto-Boruto. Also, remember Oda once said that One Piece once could not compare to Naruto Internationally or in the US. Look at it now.

So let's look at how each IP's films do starting with Naruto. Going off wikipedia/google/boxoffice/what I can find and just world wide. Since a lot of these franchise didn't leave Japan if one hit the US....then add that to first post.

As before, compared to The Last

2004 Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow  $11,141,307 (56.2%)

2005 Naruto the Movie: Legend of the Stone of Gelel $10,198,805 (51.4%)

2006 Naruto the Movie: Guardians of the Crescent Moon Kingdom $3,224,000 (16.25%)

2007 Naruto Shippuden the Movie $13,219,807 (67%)

2008 Naruto Shippuden the Movie: Bonds 10,642,859 (54%)

2009 Naruto Shippuden the Movie: The Will of Fire $8,100,000  (41%)

2010 Naruto Shippuden the Movie: The Lost Tower $8,500,000 (43%)

2011 Naruto the Movie: Blood Prison $9,065,101 (46%)

2012 Road to Ninja: Naruto the Movie $17,900,000 (90.2%)

...God, they really did use to have one a year.

2014 Naruto the Last $19,840,000 (100%)

2015 Boruto $39,500,000 (199.1%)

Now, how much did Naruto-Boruto make all together and see how much of that is from the Last.

$151,331,879 (13.1%)

Average each movie earned by dividing by all the movies (11):

$13,757,443.55

Thirteen percent out of eleven movies isn't that bad. That crescent moon one seems to be the bomb of the franchise. The Shippuden movies were not that impressive and Road of Ninja used to blow them all out of the water. Seeing as the last got most of it money tricking the Japanese fans it numbers being comparable top the last isn't that surprising. From what I recall, they were really pushing the Boruto movie to make sure it was a success...Yet, JuJutsu and Demon slayer still defeat it with one movie each, Dragon ball and One Piece with just there most recent movies, and MHA likely has another movie in the works which will allow that to surpass Naruto-Boruto as well.

Now bleach since it was the one that had an anime cancel and replaced by a Naruto spin off.

2006 Bleach: Memories of Nobody               660 million yen * 0.0085= 5,610,000

2007 Bleach: The DiamondDust Rebellion   800 million yen *  0.0092 =7,360,000

2008 Bleach: Fade to Black                          700 million yen * 0.0099= 6,930,000

2010 Bleach: Hell Verse                                610 million yen * 0.012= 7,320,000

2018 Bleach $4,523,017

...I'm not sure of these numbers. Yen dollar exchange rate changed and it isn't recorded on wiki. So had to try my hand with it...feel free to correct.

In total and compared to Naruto's total:

$31,743,017 (21%)

Average per movie (5) then compared to Naruto-Boruto average.

$6,348,603.40 (46.15%)

My guess, Japanese fans were done with the Great Filler arc by that point. Its story was better then that second movie with the knights and the stones. The next movie seem to have gotten a boost by announcing it was not part of the Great Filler arc.

Remember according to those TvTokyo report they always talk about Naruto And Boruto both blow Pokemon out of the water.

Wait, are they serious?!

TV Tokyo distributed Pokemon, how the hell they thought Naruto/Boruto would beat Pokemon when that is their best-selling franchise of all time?! Someone must be drinking some sort of Kool-Aid over there.

You're forgetting that Naruto was back to back with Pokemon on Thursday for its entire run? If TVTokyo was distributing Naruto then it was also distributing Pokemon also Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Shaman King, and One Punch Man, and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and Yu-Yu Hakusho, and Soul Eater, and Zoids, and Yo-Kai Watch, and Black Clover, 86, Toradora!, Skip Beat!, Shin Tenchi Muyo!, Trigun, Medabots, Cardfight!! Vanguard, Bakugan, Samurai Deeper Kyo, D.Gray-Man, Bleach, Negima!, Eyeshield 21, Ahiru no Sora, Duel Masters, hack//SIGN, Love Hina, Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple, BeyBlade, s-CRY-ed, Fruits Basket, Fairy Tail, The Seven Deadly Sins, that Gundam spin off Build Fighters, and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Remember that one list Pro-enders keep using that Namaenash says was just profits from distributing it to other countries? Its likely Just the anime Pokémon and Yu-Gi-oh were/are likely blowing it out of the water in everything else.

Oh right well unless anyone has any movies I forgot or anything like that. I'll end this for now with my observation.

Naruto was a successful if middling as an Anime Movie Franchise. It did good enough to get a movie every year while it was running, which is more than some can say, but it clearly had its betters: One Piece, Dragon Ball, Pokemon, and Conan. But there is a reason why they aren't making more just from these listings. Since 2015 anime has resurged internationally and has led to their movies becoming even more profitable than they were before. For example, My Hero Academy actually does about as well as a normal Naruto movie in Japan, but it pushed higher by the international money. Also, Demon Slayers is at this moment the highest grossing Japanese film ever, and Jujutsu Kaisen is number 8...Oh and they are actually still in theaters and have made millions more in the past few weeks since I started this. Hell, even One Piece is doing better in the US than The Last or Boruto did, and Oda admitted in an interview alongside Kishimoto after Naruto ended that, 'he just had to accept that One Piece wasn't as popular internationally as Naruto was.' They are all blowing what Naruto-Boruto made out of the water despite the fact that it was suppose to have international appeal. Why bother doing another Boruto movie when everything else seems to be doing better then it now?

Why make a movie that struggles to make thousands while others easily make millions?

Because 999 rights and 1 wrong is devastating while 999 wrongs and 1 right is considered great success.

All anyone thinks about now is box office numbers.

Like comparing Transformers movies to Shawshank Redemption.

Box office numbers is an easy way to show initial success. Unless you want me to comb through charts, graphs, dvd sales to be more detailed, and I wouldn't know where to start with that.

Transformers and Shashank are different genres. I'm doing the same genre often produce by the same company for generally the same audience. I also decided to avoided comparing movies like Miyazaki's and similar work to avoid that. This more in the lines of showing Disney's animated or marvel movies box office and comparing them with maybe adding in some dreamworks and warner bro/DC.

Huh? So you're not willing to compare Transformer with Shawshank Redemption, but are willing to compare say The Incredibles with Shrek even though those are different genres? (Animation or CGI is not a genre. It is a style) I doubt Shrek is a superhero genre.

Okay, how about Ever After vs Romeo + Juliet? Romance movies?

Pulp Fiction vs Goodfellas or The Godfather? Gangster movies?
Transformer vs He-Man vs G.I.Joe? Since these are movies based on toy line and are action.

God knows we do do director comparisons.

Point is, can you define how successful an artwork is based on how much money it makes? Alot of movies we consider cult classics failed so hard in the box office, but let's try another one more recent.

Wonder Woman vs Captain Marvel.
------------------------------------------------
Studio: DC  vs  Marvel
Genre: Comic book Superheroes
Box office:
$822.8 million vs $1.128 billion

Rotten tomato scores

WW:
93% Critic
83% Audience

CM:
79% critic score (though it was much higher when it first came out)
45% Audience score (again, lower when it first came out.)

They roughly have 100,000+ audience reviews, but CM has more critic scores.

Which one is objectively the better movie? No, we can't go by subjective because you could hate one movie that many deem is a cult classic. Can something be popular, but not successful? Can something be successful and NOT popular? I am sure individually we can't define perfection, but if overall more people like one over the other...does that define it?
Rhetorical, but you get my point.

Naruto the Last was a low rated movie and there was a lot of controversy around it. From what we have seen, most Naruto fans HATED Naruto the Last, but loved Road to Ninja.

Well if you want to go into that much detail that's fine. If you want to do that or more, go ahead. I asked that you do it about Japanese animated movies though since that's is what this topic is about.

When I made this topic over a month back it was with the thought, "People still obsess over how the Last did on this site. So, to help them move on. Let's look at something simple box office numbers to show how poorly it did compared to other movies that are similar if not often from the same company. Since streaming has revitalized interest in anime new movies after if are likely going to be more and more successful making the Last and Boruto look even worse, and if they look worse to you; imagine what do you think the executives see?" Sorry that wasn't good enough for you.

Oh decided to look at Dragon Ball Super Hero to see how it doing so far.

Domestic: $32,662,582

First Week: $21,124,049

Japan:$18,500,000

First week:$4,983,931

World Wide:$70,562,582

So, what do you all think will happen first. Dragon Ball getting another movie or anime or Boruto getting its own movie (that was not a package deal with the last)?

It already set at number six of movies on the second post, and only Broly made more money out of the dragon ball movies.
