SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea has launched a long-range rocket, U.S. and South Korean officials confirmed to CNN on Sunday.


The payload of the rocket remains unclear. North Korea has said the rocket was to carry a satellite into space, but the United States, South Korea and other nations fear it could be a missile with a warhead attached.

A senior Obama administration official in Washington confirmed that the rocked did clear Japan.

The rocket -- launched at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday (10:30 p.m. ET Saturday) -- was a "provocative act in violation" of U.N. Security Council resolution on North Korea's weapons program, said Fred Lash, a State Department spokesman, told reporters

Japan has requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Council

Hmm, I saw the same thing in Yahoo and is quite interested in the six-party talks that may happen. Japan and S.K. are 2 countries that N.K. hates and I wonder if everyone could hold back on their grudges to try to negotiate peacefully....

The United Nations hadn't done anything since... well... since. So they won't do anything about a certain missle from a country that may attack their neighboring enemy country.

Well, the UN really CAN'T do anything. It is really only a force to be reckoned with when all of it's members agree on something.

Now if N. Korea was to launch a nuke... it would probably be wiped off the face of the planet. At least the way we know it. China wouldn't let someone with nukes be their next door neighbor, at least not with a leader who has questionable sanity. Russia wouldn't like it either, and Japan would take action real fast. The US and most of Europe probably wouldn't be far behind.

Honestly, the only reason WW3 hasn't happen is because of all the countries with nuclear weapons. Cause we all know someone will get antsy and push the button. Then there would be retaliation, and well poof. No more buttons to push.
