Nintendo just announced that the Nintendo NX will be out in March 2017. That release window is global.

 

Via a financial release, Nintendo states, “For our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed ‘NX’ with a brand-new concept. NX will be launched in March 2017 globally.”

 

In a tweet, the company pointed out that “NX” is still only the console’s codename. 

 

Oddly, Nintendo apparently will not be showing the still unrevealed NX platform at this year’s E3, according to Wall Street Journal reporter Takashi Mochizuki, who was at today’s Nintendo financial briefing in Osaka.

 

The upcoming Zelda game for the Wii U has also been delayed to the same time period, and Nintendo only just announced that they would release NX and Wii U versions of the game - just like they did with Twilight Princess for the Gamecube/Wii back in 2006.

 

I think it's strange that we won't see the NX console at E3 this year.  Maybe Nintendo will host their own event or livestream the console reveal later in the year?

It is odd. It's one time that dozens and dozens journalists appearing there. I mean they can hold an event but they have to invite about the same amount. I hope they do it well because they need to get back up on their feet. Not saying Wii U was bad because it wasn't but it has severely low support in the west.

It's low thanks to Xbox one or Mike Matei said it best. The reason it's called X-box is because it has one game... it's only first shooter games.

What does Xbox have to do with what I just said? I see it more effect to all of them, not just Xbox. So back to Nintendo, they claimed that they are in their world. So why is it that Nintendo keep pushing us away from that world? Why is it hard to communicate with each other? Why not at E3, the so-called Super Bowl for gamers? Why no games until next year for a new console? We need something.

Handheld is safe but at this rate, you might as well stay handheld. It's obvious the effort for console is less support than handheld, even for first party. I just hope they know what are they doing.

It's strange how Nintendo quietly announced the NX launch date through a financial report, instead of making it a big global announcement event.

 

We still know very little about what to expect from the NX, all we know is that it may integrate a touchscreen display into the joypad, with the buttons being surrounded by the screen. It's also rumoured to be a hybrid of console and handheld.

 

Zelda will help the NX as a launch title, but Nintendo really needs to pull out all the stops if they are to make the new console prosper alongside the Xbox and PlayStation.  We need lots of games, and Nintendo needs to make it easy for third parties to work with them and the NX.

I think Nintendo could end up being a dark horse-winner this generation with how they're planning to go back to cartridges. One really good argument is the fact consoles nowadays are way too fast to read the data on discs, so you have to load up the data on each consoles' HDD.

Nintendo seems to be aiming at a problem no one ever really thought about. The only other step left is to get as many 3rd parties as possible to get them on board the cartridge thing.
