I think thats pretty much the case I think he had the right idea make itachia  true hero, but his execution was a bit clumsy hence itachis seeming mistakes in judgement that nearly undo all he wanted to have happen.

 

Itahci to me is supposed to represent ture honor and sacrafice. the noble shinobi sacraficing all he knows and loves to protect his baby brother and his village. a true samurai.

 

But the story execution leaves him looking somewhat foolish in his ideals and methodology to the point where you wonder why he didnt just kill danzo on the spot and accept execution as punishment with his sole request being that the clan and village make peace.

Well essentially I've got nothing agains the premise. but the reasoning is poorly thought out and they are basically RAMMING down your throat the Idea that Itachi was a hero even though he did morally ambiguous things at best or just idiotic at worst. In other words it was one of this series' MANY cases of "tell but not show". And even what was shown is not convincing
