Nope. He can't just retcon the entire ending. Even if the spin off isn't writter by Kishimoto, it's still part of the Naruto universe canon. What's done is done

yes he can, other series have done it as people have said, and the anime could easily have another ending, heck they already contradicted the ending with the mecha naruto fillers and the road to ninja movie, you're telling me they can't have an alternate ending and multiple different spinoffs and universes? dragon ball seemed to have no problem with  trying to retcon gt now did it?

my point is the anime is completely different from the manga most of the time with the edits to the story and the stuff they add, they could easily have an alternate ending or spinoffs with different endings. people have even said before how studio pierrot could possibly change the ending because they've done it to other anime  they have done before, naruto is not their first anime dude, its just their most famous, but they don't have to follow what kishimoto does completely, and they usually don't either   and yes the last and the last naruto chapters could be gt in this case, just because its canon doesn't stop them from being able to change it, the creators of gt sure didn't have a problem making it when akira didn't want them to

I'll admit my data is a few years old and I haven't seen any up to date rankings but I remember a few years ago SS being the most popular hetero pairing. I don't think I could believe SS being the last minute one when so much of the final arc dealt with Sakura's feelings for Sasuke and Sasuke's feelings for Team 7 and they actually got a) another confession from Sakura and b) interactions in 699 that are romantic in nature.
 
NH is just kind of glossed over and then suddenly they're together in 700. Info we've got about The Last says it fills in the gap between 699 and 700 but would not be necessary to understand the ending. That to me says that SS was the pairing Kishi wanted to focus on at the very end.
 

So it seems like Kishi actually doesn't have all that much to do with The Last outside of character designs?
It seems as though romance to him wasn't such an important thing to his story that he was willing to let others decide it for him?

I think the women's user name is netfish, she said NH first and then SS.

SS wasn't going to work until they decided with NH. Naruto was not going to be alone, he is the mc.

I still think SS was Kishimoto's final couple due to his love for Sasuke--and that NH came after it.
When he used to be cool Kishi actually defended Sakura in an interview stating that she was the heroine and not Hinata. He didn't really care about Hinata as far as I can tell with her minor appearances and tripping-over-rock scenes.
But I guess fandom got to him and he handed the crown over to Hinata-sama. If anyone deserved to be happy due to suffering and achievements it was Sakura..not overrated Miss Hyuga Hinata.
(Sorry I still love Hinata deep down. Its just her fandom I don't like)

The anime may of had some things different from the manga, but it's mostly been a faithful adaptation of the manga. So you can expect to see Himawari, Bolt and the other kids at the end of the anime

Exactly, and the fact even if Goku was surprised by seeing Chi Chi again at the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, he still knew in his heart he wanted to marry Chi Chi after their fight, and they loved each other a lot. It's one reason I think NaruSaku would have worked since it also has parallels compared to Goku x Chi Chi

Agree. I believe this was changed for money. Look all this new era project. Hinita is the main heroine now.

Kishi excuse he can't write romance is a lie, he did it in a action genre. He said that so they can get away with this SS/NH set up. SP and his assistants wanted it.

Ugggh, I wish this movie never even existed, I was thinking maybe I'll give it a shot eventually but now, I don't think I can bear to watch a single scene, knowing there are tons of NH moments in this movie..T_T

I like Karin but she's not that great...too obsessed with Sasuke.
If anything Sakura should have been the most popular female due to heroine status and her pure kick ass-ness.
But it's a twisted world we live in...one where minor characters are worshipped like goddesses while real goddesses are scorned as the devil lol.
