#972110 Most hated tropes?

Posted by Lid on 31 March 2019 - 06:41 PM in Arts & Entertainment District

That said, I can think of one I always seem to take issue with, and thats when theres some big plot reveal near the end and a character in the know goes on a long info dump explaining it in detail to another character(s) who serve as proxy for the audience. To me, it shows a severe lack of faith in the reader/viewer to be able to put things together on their own through clues and context. It makes me feel handheld and condescended to by the writer and I cant think of an example were this was used that I wasnt taken out of the story. Somewhat related is when crucial information is withheld from the audience with no hint it even exists until it is revealed in a gotcha moment for the sole purpose of making the writing or a character seem more clever. Its cheap and lazy.

Yeah this always makes me think of the ending of Psycho where the psychiatrist describes what was going on with Norman Bates. I think it was a studio decision rather than Hitchcock's

I usually dislike when there's a misunderstanding at the second act and the characters drift apart that could easily be made up by just them having a conversation. Sometimes it can be worked out well enough, but it can get old real fast especially when the conflict seems small.

#972080 RWBY

Posted by Lid on 30 March 2019 - 12:38 AM in Arts & Entertainment District

I've enjoyed RWBY quite a bit, last volume included. I think V6 was necessary to rebuild the team after being apart 4 and 5. That's why I was alright with the final battle not being related to Salem.

As for Blake and Yang, I think everything went alright. It's not like they had any major declarations or a kiss, something like that. They finished mending and patching up their relationship after it having been broken rather severely at the end of V3. Could there be more too it? Sure, and whatever happens will probably get screentime in the next volume if that's the case.

Regarding Adam, I was fine with it. I think in the moment we saw him defeat Blake and cut off Yang's arm, he seemed quite powerful. But, that was after Yang had been fighting and let her anger cloud her judgement. It also seemed like Adam was the type of person who was rather confident and had a good backbone. But, maybe that was when everything is going to plan. But when it's not, he loses control.

When Blake thwarts his plan at Haven, he abandons his troops and runs off. When confronted with what he did, he kills his fellow White Fang members. When he gets hit by the motorcycle and is confronted with Blake and Yang he makes poor judgement calls and it ends up being his downfall. I think it was fine to show that as long as he's on top it's fine but when things turn south he's not able to "adjust" in a sense.

In a way he might be somewhat like Koba from the Planet of the Apes series. He was part of a movement that had a good cause and he had ideals, but there were underlying issues there.

Other than that, I liked the JN(P)R moments where Jaune was reassured and I also enjoyed how there were some moments where Ruby actually talked back to Qrow. It helps show she's become more disillusioned with how she thought the world used to work.

I'm looking very forward to Volume 7, both because of Weiss' relationship with Atlas and how the community they're in will treat Blake considering she's a Faunus. I don't necessarily think every chapter of RWBY has been a masterpiece, but I have found it to be pretty good regularly and at least consistently above average.

#972078 2019 March Madness Thread

Well Minnesota lost, expected that against the Spartans. My bracket is hanging on though! I picked Kentucky to win the title this year so they better not let me down!

#972077 Avengers : ENDGAME

Yeah I think Kevin Feige even mentioned there's a loose connection but for the most part they're separate. Gotta say my hype for Endgame is reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeal.  :omfg:  :spaz:  :wha:  :eager:

Did anyone else get a giant bit of relief when Tony showed up at the end of the trailer with the rest? Looking forward to him and Cap resolving their issues.

Well Gophers got destroyed by Michigan but should have done enough to punch their ticket at least. Selection Sunday should be interesting. I heard on ESPN Radio this morning some analyst say Indiana could still make it and I can not believe that for a second. I'm pretty sure they will be in the NIT.

#971675 Alita: Battle Angel

Posted by Lid on 07 March 2019 - 03:16 AM in Arts & Entertainment District

Saw it, loving it.

Don't trust movie reviewers these days. Watch the movie without prejudice and make up your own judgement :)

Hey now, we're not all that bad. Here's an excerpt from my review:

What does help the narrative, though, is the journey Alita goes on and her overall arc as a character. Watching her learn about the world, along with the thin line between more artificial beings and humans is compelling.

Her evolution from being a curious, peaceful person to a warrior ready to fight for a cause is also handled well and improves the cinematic experience.

It of course helps to get a strong performance from Salazar, who does solid work using the motion capture technology to give a well-rounded portrayal. The initial naivety the character has is convincing and her growing resolve and willpower is inspired, thanks to Salazar’s work.

Overall I thought it was pretty good. Not great, not my favorite, but still pretty good.
