While battling a bout of coldness-insomnia I ran across this link, which led me to (be warned there are tons and tons of profanities) this recording of Bale laying into the Director of Photography on the set of Terminator Salvation.

As an actor, I'm trying to understand from both points of view here. It's true that it's incredibly rude to be moving during a shoot, not only because of the actor's concentration but also because any noise you make could be recorded into the master audio, which is the audio recorded separately and then mixed into the film during audio looping, which would ruin all the work done by not just the actor but every other single person on the set.

But as the actor, you should let the Director deal with it, you ask the assistant directors to speak with the DP and if they don't stop then you ask the assistant director to talk with the Director, then Producers. You do not have a giant outburst on set which wastes everyone's time. No matter how many times the DP was moving around during shots nothing makes up for the time wasted by Bale, or the uncivil way he dealt with things. Unfortunately, unlike a normal job where Bale would be fired, even the Director could control him (he's who Bale refers to when he's talking to McG), Bale is too great of an asset to the success of the film. But this is a great illustration of how someone can be great in one aspect, acting, but terrible in another, dealing with conflict. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but there's no indication in the audio that Bale had made any attempts prior to this 'second' offense to stop any more 'messing around' by the director of photography. Gez... no wonder he and Crowe get along so well.

  • Interests:My interests? Well, I do enjoy most manga and anime, but I think that's a given. I also enjoy comic books and videogames, so I guess I'm kinda geeky there. But hey, I do other stuff. I like to go out and party, but I do not like drinks served in a femvase (damn fruity stuff... ew), so good ol' beer is my mate. So yeah, I'm also a psychology student, so your mind interests me.

If I didn't think the students around me would frown upon having me listen to this during class, I would have loved to check this out, but as it is I'll have to wait to listen to it. It's funny though, just how much a director has to deal with if an actor lets his success go to his/her head and evolve into a drama lama. I'm getting the impression that Bale has a really bad temper, and I think he should see someone for it (anger management plz), since it's not healthy to get riled up for nothing, and he's more prone to do something he'll regret later (like walk out on a big-hitter like the Terminator flick).

I do feel as if this should be in the Entertainment District though, so I'll move it. If anyone disagrees, feel free to say so and I'll (or another mod, lol) can move it again. We do so love to move threads after all!

  • Interests:I have a degree in Film and TV and am working on obtaining a masters degree in screen writing. I spend most of my time reviewing scripts at work and at home. Yup, I'm the lucky person who gets to sort through all the submitted screenplays and ends up reading them and providing script coverage to the producers. I enjoy working in development but I hope one day to branch out and work in other areas of production. For example, post production, I love to edit films and I wouldn't mind working on set either. My ultimate goal is to one day become a producer/writer.

I'm not surprised he got angry. It's a definite no-no to move around or make noise when filming on set but he did kind of make an ass of himself. He should have pulled the director aside and complained to him about the DP instead of attacking the DP. When you work on set, you have to have thick skin. If you make the tiniest of errors, be prepared to be yelled at. It happens!! I've seen actors/directors/producers blow up like this on set and during meetings. You just have to learn how to work with talent. Hopefully, Christan will learn from this incident and learn to respect others better.

LOL, some guy made a song out of the infamous recording:

It is really a non issue anymore. People have bad days and throw tantrums for no reason not just celebrities. This tape was made MONTHS ago and is just now surfacing. If the person he was yelling at had any kind of lingering animosity with Bale it would of come to light much sooner. As it is the two made nice VERY shortly after the blow up. No one was fired and no other onset issues have been brought to light. The people releasing the recording didn't even have anything to do with the film it was someone from the insurance agency behind the movie getting it to TMZ to make a quick side buck. I am not saying Bale was in the right or acting mature in anyway, but as an actor I can also understand his reaction. I have never done a movie, but I have done many stage plays and I liken it to an actors scene being ruined, by someone in tech missing a tech cue or another actor flubbing a line or missing an entrance. When you are so into what you are doing these kinds of things are almost like being stabbed in the gut. It totally breaks all of your focus and character and sometimes these things are not easy to get back. I think people need to cut him a little bit of a break here. He is not the first celebrity to have an outburst and let their emotions get to them. He won't be the last either and he certainly isn't the worst. If you think his outburst was bad look at the onset issues between Lilly Tomlin and Director David Russel on the I Heart Huckabees set.

^ woah wall of text XDDD

anyway even if people should cut him a break cos of his career he's still HUMAN. He should have known when enough ranting was enough; he got his point across 3092840938204932 minutes before the tape ended (and i wouldn't doubt it went on for the rest of the day) so there was no point and justification for acting like that B|

also he shouldn't even have claimed that DP guy wasn't a professional or w/e when he himself wasn't acting like one at the time. I agree with Chao; Bale should've just let the director or someone who actually specializes more with technical difficulties and the like deal with it >w>

btw keeping in mind this raging of Mister Bale .... dooooes that make that rumor of him getting in a huge fight with his mom and sister in that hotel room true? I mean, first impressions from those rumors was hardcore skeptism but now that he's getting scrutiny for this tape...

another btw, i dont know much about those rumors since i didn't really hear anything about it at that time, i just heard it about it recently-- being mentioned with the above XD

edit:
needed more batman voice BD

It didn't go on all day from what I have read. It was in fact defused quite quickly. While I agree it was not professional of him in the least. I think it is even less professional for whoever was in the insurance department to leak it and for TMZ to spread it around. By the time this tape surfaced the event was already a non issue.

This happened months ago and the people involved had already forgiven and forgotten and moved on with making the movie. I admit chances are high that Bale is prolly a bit of an egocentric jerk as are most celebs, but I don't think he is this uber villain that allot of people have been making him out to be as of late.

It really is quite hilarious, these sort of situations, when you get to see just how professional professionals really are. Though the real shame here is that people actually expect artists to be this way by now, and that's why they feel they are granted the liberty to act in such manners on set. I don't care how great he is as an actor, that sort of inappropriate behavior, regardless of what the DP was doing, is unacceptable I think. If someone was messing around on the set it isn't his problem to deal with.
