I don't know about that glock though. If he leaved from the US, unless he's licensed and have a good reason to bring it, he will be stop by airport security

Money and passport
Digital Camera
Get yourself a map
Cellphone
Knife and Matches (or lighter)
2 days worth of clothing (If its just your backpack I do suggest a traveling bag though..)
Ipod
Just to let you know...You should mark a few things down on your map of where you want to hit before you leave for Japan.
Now if you'll excuse me I have to pack my own bags, leaving for Southern Mexico Tomorrow evening to hike those forests XD

On second thought, I'd take a cattle prod. I'll need it to keep all the crazy jap girls off of me.

A handy Japanese-book with kawaii Japanese girls on it, giving short explanations of Japanese basic words.
A camera.
My iPod, choke-full of Anime music.
Laptop.
An excuse to stay in Japan. :]

-Just read you can't get a pre-paid cellphone there anymore as of 2006 but you can still rent. Just in case.
-Phone numbers to the U.S embassy.
-3 days worth of clothes. (Make sure you know what type of weather you will be encountering if you decide to go outside the cities.)
-Toothbrush and babywipes everything else you can buy. (Buy disposable stuff where you can)
-Passport, cash and credit card(s).
-Some form of translation guide if you are not fluent.
-If you have a GPS try to get Japan Maps. (I have a garmin GPS and got my maps online. www.travelbygps.com) Life saver!
-If you have space a laptop.
-Digital Camera
Well thats the essentials for me anyway. You can buy what you think you need while you are there. Oh and find the money exchangers while you are there just in case you use up all your yen!
Well enjoy and have fun!

Clothing, if you're planning on buying stuff I suggest packing more on shirts then pants that way you have more room in the luggage
Passport, keep this close to heart literally
Wallet, full of cash
Cellphone, keep in contact with the people you're going with
Secondary Items:
Basic conversational book, carrying around a translation book is practically useless if you don't know how to create proper sentences
Food, if you're planning on saving cash to buy stuff then packing ramen or something similar is a good idea
Ipod, trains from city to city are a long ride
Digital Camera, you'll be glad too
Laptop, most hotels have internet connection in there rooms... downside is that you might need to bring a ethernet cable
why yes. that is my adorable sister hugging a dakimura. got a problem?
