These pairings actually had development (albeit lackluster and nothing like Naruto's). We knew Orihime was in love with Ichigo and we've seen plenty of positive and tender moments shared between Ichigo and Orihime. Plus, the dynamic between Ichigo and Rukia was dead after the Soul Society Arc. After that, Rukia started exclusively getting tagged with Renji. They were always together. Then you have that moment Renji thanking Ichigo for getting him and Rukia "back together." So it makes sense. Kudos to Kubo for at least having the sense to get the pairings right, despite the rest of manga (or everything post-soul-society arc) being kitten!

Romance wise the ending is ok. This is just a case of your ship not happening and you feeling bitter about it. But I'll conceed that everything else was rushed and poorly executed with lots of unanswered questions.

I think you should carefully look at the word lackluster. I used that word for a reason. The most we get from Ichigo is subtext. Them gazing at each other's eyes multiple times after Ichigo rescues here is crap, but it's something and at least a hint of what is to come at the end. I'm not praising the quality of the writing. It's the fact that the pairings actually made sense, which is more than what can be said for the Naruto pairings.

 

Besides, this isn't like Naruto where the title character is actually stated to be in love with someone. Ichigo was a bland garystu from the getgo, so you don't really need that much to get the sense of who he might end up with in the end.

Unlike Sakura, Rukia got demoted from being the female lead a long time ago. She was replaced by Orihime after the Soul Society arc. Rukia got put on the backburner and was always tagging alongside Renji afterward.

😭 Rukia got demoted again this feels like Naruto all over again. I'm seriously wondering who these idiots that are so tied into the money since they ruined him. Ichigo also got a hair cut :(. I'm angry as heck. Since I never once saw them showing any feelings other than friendship.

Not really. I preferred IR but didn't mind either way what happened, so long as it happened well. This ending though is trash. I would have said the same thing if IR had happened like this. I would have been probably happy they were together, but would have blasted the ending just the same.

There wasn't a single point in time where Ichigo reciprocated Orihime's advances, so from that standpoint, it made no sense.

Yes they are but I still hated how he dropped 15 years of development and chemistry between Ichigo and Rukia for the underwhelming versions. And I liked Ichigo X Orihime more when I was a kid.

We can disregard the eye gazing, but from a reader's standpoint, the totality of the evidence still seems to suggest that the author wants Ichihime to happen. Unlike in Naruto, we aren't told Ichigo is in love with anyone. We aren't told Rukia is in love with anyone.

Really, Ii there a single moment in all 686 chapters where we're told Rukia is in love with Ichgio? Even one? I can think of multiple times where that is explicitly stated for Orihime and one time where it's explicitly stated for Renji (albeit somewhat vague with the whole "getting us back together" comment). 

 

So it's:

 

Ichigo x Rukia: Gazing at each other eyes a few times, some camaraderie before Hueco Mundo arc when Rukia gets demoted in terms of relevance.

 

Ichigo x Orihime: Gazing at each others eyes a few times, camaraderie throughout the entire series, multiple confirmations of love from Orihime, and an explicit confession from Orihime.

 

Renji x Rukia: Gazing at each other eyes, camaraderie from Hueco Mundo arc to final story arc, explicit relationship ("getting us back together" comment).

 

Ishida x Orihime: Pure headcanon

 

That's how I see things. And I again. I don't think it's well written. I don't think anything post-soul society is well written. That being said, there were solid clues to let us know it was gonna happen. Nothing like the Naruto ending.

 

If this series were to have stopped at Soul Society, I'd see where you were coming from. But we get some things in Hueco Mundo and the 1000 war arc that more or less seal the deal.
