Well lately I've been reviewing episodes and try to figure out what is the purpose of the main character and the theme which focuses on the story ...

During the Pain's Arc, Naruto argues that he wants to save the world ,but in the last encounter with Sasuke, he says if he cannot save him,he will die with him ...
Note that there is a part of history that says that Naruto cannot be Hokage if he could not to save Sasuke, that is, if he cannot save Sasuke it implies that he cannot save the world?

Naruto is indicated as the boy of the prophecy of the toad ...

Do not you think the story is a bit confusing-especially because it runs a lot around the yin-yang, or the idea is that Naruto and Sasuke have to be 2, but sometimes the story implies that there is not...

You have a point...athough, I think since his first objective was to become hokage, I think that that's the reigning objective.

Maybe in some form or way, he just might save Sasuke and become hokage and what not.

My view is that it started as the classic rags to riches story, ie Naruto becoming Hokage.

However, it's expanded beyond that, becoming hokage has taken a backseat to ending the cycle of hatred of the Shinobi system.

Naruto's redemption of Sasuke is symbolic to that. Because the Uchiha seem to be a clan of hatred stemming from one of the Rikudo Sennin's sons, Naruto's ancestry through the Uzumaki and the Senju (which is also descended from the other son of the Rikudo Sennin,) either redeeming or dying with Sasuke means that this ancient feud that has resulted in so much bloodshed will finally come to an end.

To reiterate, there is something bigger than just becoming a Hokage occurring right now. His actions has already gained him recognition from all of the Kage, anyway, now it's time to forge peace.

Yeah, it seems like becoming Hokage isn't his focus anymore, seemingly because he is already there.

It was revised in the Kushina chapter that he still wants to be hokage and was his goal.

It's bouncing out of focus yeah. but at the moment it's maintaining world peace. Unrealistic and unnecessarily scattering the theme, I know but there'd be no point in him fighting in the war otherwise or having the war all. Hokage is almost a given people are saying he should be the next Hokage, and though he might be young and inexperienced it's a sign that goal will be accomplished eventualy

I agree. I think he will become Hokage and there will be some nice resolution there, but it won't be as big a deal as when it was first put forth with his childish determination. Now, it seems almost like a given. Plotwise, there's never been much stopping him.

I think that though Naruto may have very loudly said that was his goal in childhood, I think it quickly took a backseat to recovering Sasuke. Now, it's not even a goal he's pursuing. And for the reader, it's just a given that he will be Hokage eventually, as well as end the shinobi cyle of hatred. On both of those points there is absolutely development or suspense.

Hokage - The plot is not built to illustrate his journey to the Hokage's seat. There is never any suspense about the possibilty of him not getting it. The suspense of him getting it or not getting it is what qualifies a goal as an overarching objective in his life (and there's no suspense here, hence the hokage thing is just a goal). So becoming Hokage may very well have been his early childhood goal, but in the story it will only function as his reward, given at the end of his dramatic storyline. (Ironic, because for real life situations, that pinnacle position would be the hardest. But here it is assumed the story will end once he reaches Hokage-dom, especially if you look at the thread on how many people would read a story about Naruto's adult life or his children.)

Ending shinobi cycle - again just a goal that he says he wants to do, but actually doesn't work toward it: His true objective is saving Sasuke, and ending the shinobi cycle of hatred goes along with that. But, and this is important, it's not the other way around. He doesn't set out to end the shinobi cycle of hatred and then decide to save Sasuke as well. He was well into his journey of saving Sasuke when the Pain arc struck. Nagato explained to him the hatred and Naruto took it on as something he would end too. But think about it: Everyone falls to Naruto's talk-no-jutsu. He sways people wherever he goes. Not because he set's out to but because it just happens. He doesn't have to try to do it. And again, there's no suspense about him ending or not ending the cycle of hatred. It's a given to the audience that he will. He's never met anyone who didn't bend to it with minimal force. Except one....

Saving Sasuke - the one true objective for Naruto. That's it. And everything else, in fairy tale fashion, will be awarded to him because he has succeeded in achieving that goal. He will successfully save Sasuke in tandem with ending the shinobi cycle of hatred. And his battle to end Sasuke's hatred is the metaphor for ending all shinobi hatred. So once he does that, everything else will fall into place. And the final personal goals will be realized: becoming Hokage and getting his happy ending with Sakura.

Let's see... for a list of objectives Naruto wants to do:

1. Eat seven bowls of ramen.
2. B*tch slap some sense into Sasuke and make him realize his revenge is stupid.
3. Become Hokage and try to end the cycle of hate.
4. Getting together with Sakura.
5. Have smexy time with Sakura, and repopulate the Uzumaki clan.

I think that about covers his objectives. tongue.gif

Everything is connected to becoming Hokage. Naruto said it himself. He can't be Hokage if he can't save his own friend and he can't be with Sakura if he can't keep his promise, which is to bring back Sasuke. Sasuke is the representation of the cycle of hatred. So we can see the series of events that is going to happen starting from Sasuke and ending at becoming Hokage.

I'm not saying Sakura is not as important, but you know how Naruto is when it comes to ramen, it always comes first. tongue.gif

An objective-wise, he talked about ramen waaaaaaay more than anything else in the early days. Remember Kakashi asking about their dreams, likes and dislikes? Yeah, his were all about ramen!
