Speaking of Sasuke...

I DEFINITELY like Doc Destructo's Characterization of Sasuke in his fanfics. He's such a conniving smartass. XDDDD!

I do love Destructo's characterization too. It's actually what I'd think Sasuke in canon would be if he kept his original attitude, only less insane and stoic. You know, now I feel like reading his fics.... I'll be right back.

My point is only this, this whole thing. Started because harry asked for the opinion for a story, but you made a small rant, then ciardha agreed but as the debate continued Madz found out and asked us to stop.

Someone decided to continue because of a fault in another's opinion, one thing led to another and here we are. I have to agree with trix that ciardha doesn't have the right to pass judgement upon everyone.

Omega paid attention to her arguement of the authors so he saw something.

Soupy is right as well that you can't remove the flaws in a character as well, isn't that what we like about Sakura as well? Because she's flawed? It's also because Kishimoto who has flaws with heroines.

And by going as far as to accuse our own writers of something how does that make you any different from uber-Hinata fans that see only the surface. Also if Kishimoto has a problem with the character he created the interpretations by not fixing a concrete point.

Look all I'm trying to say is the reason for this arguement are situated in a setting that probably wasn't the best place to begin with. Harry could've better started this in another thread but I think he was looking for a quick opinion. This Fic listing thread turned into a soapbox and went places that they probably shouldn't have gone.

Wait what? I didn't start this thread, I posted the link to the story because I read it, and it was the first new fic in months i've started reading that I felt worth recommending, then a couple of individuals decided to criticize the story because they felt the charactor of Sakura didn't meet up to what they believe the charactor should be they went on a rant, and considering I recommended the fic I felt the need to defend the fic specially as I didn't agree with their opinion. If the way I worded it mad it sound otherwise then I am sorry that wasn't my intention. I thought I was just making a recommendation which is the whole point of the 'The NaruSaku Fic Listing' right?

I apoligize to Madz if i've caused you any stress or you felt disheartened by some of the comments posted, mine or otherwise, But I genuinlly enjoy this story, and didn't post a link to start some debate. Personally think you've got Sakura's charactor close to cannon, she's a strong independant individual, who is the women behind the most powerful man in the village, making sure he doesn't do anything crazy like change the ninja uniforms bright orange. She's still flawed, but she's always been designed to be like that, and I personaly can see the two still pussyfooting around each other for years to come if no third party comes to break their little bubble.

Hope you still continue wrting this fic...because I have always enjoyed your other stories.

On a different not, what the bloody hell happened here? I haven't really been to the Great NaruSaku Listing, thread for a while so didn't know it got moved, but bloody hell didn't think I'd open a can of worms like this, Seriously this is a fanfic, the fanfic writer is allowed to change the slightly to suit the fanfic, besides everyone interprets the charactor differently, so when they will write that charactor depending on how they see them, not how I see them, or X, Y or Z, but how they see them.

OK to get back on the topic of Characterisation in Fanfic, i've recently come to a conclusion that the large majority of non NaruSaku fics completely get her charactor wrong, she's nearly alway portrayed as a fangirl, she's always beating up and insulting Naruto and whenever he makes a point she appears to dissagree with him on principle. when she finds out about him being a host she calls him a monster.

It's grating, I thought i'd give other pairings a go, but most of them have messed up her charactor, specially NaruHina fics where i've found Hinata appears to be a OC, who's suddenly not shy but very outgoing, also very vindictive, and strong enough to beat anyone who dares challenges her. I'm starting to wonder if most of these people ever read the Manga or not.

I don't even have a problem with Bash fics to some extent, but within the realm of reality, not completely fabricated over the top that you don't even recognise the charactors even slightly.

Either that, or she is way too apolagetic about her actions, and acts as if she has done Naruto some great wrong, and that she never ever would deserve him.. you know that stuff.

I think Sakura's character has to be very different from canon OR not even be mentioned for a NaruXwhatever pairing to work. For Sakura to dismiss Naruto as a love interest is completely out of her character.

I tend to stay away from character bashing fics, but an exception of mine would be pudgypudge's fics. Those contain Sasuke, Kakashi, and Sakura (to an extent) bashing, but I find most of his fics a good read. EroSlackerMicha's on the other hand... DX

That doesn't usually bother me as long as it's quickly corrected and other characters (usually Naruto, but not always) point out to her that she has been a good and loyal friend, but merely imperfect. It's when other characters pile on that it really grates on me.

I agree with you, I myself started writing fanfics because I couldn't stand how OOC most Naruto characters were. That or I can't stand Naruto character's placed in stories that are in our time, their shinobi not teens in the modern world. However there is freedom of speech and artistic license what have you so ppl can write what they want. I just made sure I kept all my characters personalities the same and only made them a little more mature but that's it. I did this because I wrote a fanfic I personally would love to read so that's what I gave my readers. I guess author's can do a better job with warning's in their summaries cause some say Naru/Saku and it's usually Sakura with Sasuke, then Sasuke leaves her or uses her and Naruto picks up the pieces. So better description on their part would stop unwanted flaming from fans unhappy on what's happening....ok I'm rambling now XD

I'm sure everyone else has read those type of stories and honestly I really hate those type of stories myself where it begins with Sakura belittling Naruto for no apparent reason and being with Sasuke only for him to break her heart and have her running to Naruto for comfort or as a silver trophy, I mean I don't mind those as long as they're done in a good way, but very few can do that and I won't even bother to read stories that start with Sakura already doing it with Sasuke and then Naruto has to settle for sloppy seconds, that degrades both Naruto and Sakura's characters and makes them look like complete idiots, especially what we know of them in canon since Naruto highly respects her and Sakura herself dislikes jealously. I mean I shouldn't talk since some of my characterizations are OOCness sometimes, but I always try my best to respect Naruto and Sakura as characters and write them in canon to the best of my ability, sure there's a little OOCness, but it doesn't mean we can't explore certain sides to characters if they're handled in a proper way.

I didn't want to post a link to an actual fic because then it would mean i'm bashing myself but Sealing the Deal god this story is seriously pissing me off. it started of decent, but for a NaruSaku fic, but it fails in portraying either Naruto or Sakura in a good light, and now they've gone and added Kushina in the mix as well. I can't remember the last time I read a fic that put me off NaruSaku pairing as much as this one. It's sad because obviously the auther is a NaruSaku fan judging from their favourite list, but fails to undertand the dynamic of the two charactors. I have to wonder if the auther even realises how much OOC everyone is....I try not to leave negative reviews, but dammit this story makes me want to smack the auther.

I agree and I'd like to add to that, I also have issues with how Sasuke and the SasuSaku dymanic is often portayed in those fics as well. The ones I've read tend to protray him as a wife-beater, philanderer, jackass who views Sakura as nothing more than a baby factory and so on. If it's set at a point where Sasuke has returned after having his senses beat him by Naruto and is either fully redeemed or well on that path, I have trouble seeing that Sasuke treating Sakura that poorly at a time he's supposed to be reprairing and healing (or already having done so) bonds. Given what I think the long term intentions Kishimoto has for him, I don't see redeemed Sasuke doing the things people have him do.

On the other hand, if Sasuke is brought back under total duress without being redeemed and still clinging to him original goals, I can't imagine Sakura just trying to shack up with him and not understand the risk involved nor can I see Sasuke getting himself involved in a relationship like that. It's clear she knows he on the wrong path and that he is doing some pretty awful things. She got far enough to convince herself that he needed to die. I can't see her ever entering into a romantic relationship with him in this state. And I especially can't see Sasuke doing so when he has spent the lion's share of the series stomping all over bonds he views as holding him back. Why even pretend to form one with a person whose bond you have been trying to eliminate to achieve what is clearly a secondary goal (reviving the clan)? I don't see him doing it.

I have trouble seeing the SasuSaku relationship generally, but if it's going to be used I hate watching in portrayed in ways that bastardize Sasuke, treat Sakura as the blind-love sick fool she isn't, and have Naruto swoop in for the rescue while also dumping on bastardized Sasuke.

Yeah I'm gonna agree 100% I dont like going out of my way to be rude...but yeah I felt forced reading it. Sakura's depiction is painful to read and Hinata is was so far off character it wasn't even funny. I have no idea what the aim for this story is, I felt confused the whole time I was reading. I cant stand how Sakura is a walking time bomb and everything pisses her off. Its a confusing story and bringing in Kushina wasn't a good idea in my book.

Hah, once I read the first chapter, I knew the author was gonna make the story really bad. Glad I stayed away from it. Another thing, bringing in Kushina ain't gonna work unless you're PJ. I pity the poor author who tries to emulate PJ's greatness. NO ONE can copy PJ.

I really really agree with you. I've read two SasuHina fics so far and I can't stand how they make the characterizations terrible.
One fic started with Naruto marrying Sakura, and a depressed Hinata sleeping with Sasuke. The problem is Sakura isn't over Sasuke, and tries to seduce him even though she's married with Naruto. Sasuke who is annoyed with Sakura punches her. Hinata later finds out she's pregnant and an angry Sakura tries to kill Hinata only to have Sasuke come in to rescue and beat the hell out of Sakura. Lol, wtf!? Sakura isn't the type to cheat on a guy when she's married, and she definitely won't try to kill Hinata just because she is jealous! I stopped reading this story the moment Naruto is starting to fall in love with Hinata.

The second fic was Sakura did something terrible to Hinata(can't remember) and she lied to Naruto that she was the victim and Hinata was the evil guy. Naruto, obviously takes Sakura's side. Hinata who loves Naruto is heartbroken and Sasuke saves her and beats Naruto for not truly seeing the truth of what a b*tch Sakura is.

If anybody can recommend me to a SasuHina fic where they don't portray Hinata as the poor victim who needs to be saved by Sasuke, and Sakura as the evil b*tch who manipulates Naruto, be my guest cool.gif

Just to weigh in again really quickly about characterisation of Sakura. I think that especially recently, there have been a lot of stories which don't portray her particularly well simply because of her character development.

From part 1 to part 2, she has grown from a simple, shallow, one layered character into a complex, conflicted teenager with lots of issues to deal with. In that sense, the options for portraying her according to the author's imagination become quite limited. Although I do believe that there are many aspects of Sakura's character on which the foundations of the future/fanfic Sakura can be built, I don't think that many people are able to come to grips with the full extent of her character and so have to focus on just a few, either negative or positive.

From skimming, I would also like to say that I don't really know that you can decide whether a portrayal of any character is 'right' or 'wrong' because unless you are writing within the same time frame as the author himself, who can really predict the future of these characters. While I agree that OOC is a valid criticism sometimes, I try to reserve judgement until reading the backstory (if there is one), as I feel that if the OOC-ness can be explained in a believable way (to me), it's all good.

Then again, as with everything, fanfics are very subjective, and some people may never feel comfortable if characters are not depicted in one particular manner, whilst some may not even care if they're reading about a completely different character with the same name so they can put a face to the name.

To disgrace oneself is something a samurai should never do.

I wanted to bring up some not-so-much-important topic. Often in fanfiction I can read "Narutos hair grew as long as his father" etc. Maybe thats just me, but adult Naruto with long hair would look retardet IMO.

He would look much better with current hairstyle. -> http://browse.devian...set=24#/d1m8hrr

Besides, Kishimoto practically showed us with that chapter how adult Naruto will look. So... no long hair people. biggrin.gif
