Had a thought today, and wondered how other shounen jump movies were doing compared to Naruto the Last and Boruto.

 

Also I'll be going with what the wiki/google says the final earrings (world wide) are because box office mojo https://www.boxoffic..._nb_tt_mojologo seems to not record that accurately in some cases.

Thirteen percent out of eleven movies isn't that bad. That crescent moon one seems to be the bomb of the franchise. The Shippuden movies were not that impressive and Road of Ninja used to blow them all out of the water. Seeing as the last got most of it money tricking the Japanese fans it numbers being comparable top the last isn't that surprising. From what I recall, they were really pushing the Boruto movie to make sure it was a success...Yet, JuJutsu and Demon slayer still defeat it with one movie each, Dragon ball and One Piece with just there most recent movies, and MHA likely has another movie in the works which will allow that to surpass Naruto-Boruto as well.

My guess, Japanese fans were done with the Great Filler arc by that point. Its story was better then that second movie with the knights and the stones. The next movie seem to have gotten a boost by announcing it was not part of the Great Filler arc.

Oh right well unless anyone has any movies I forgot or anything like that. I'll end this for now with my observation.

 

Naruto was a successful if middling as an Anime Movie Franchise. It did good enough to get a movie every year while it was running, which is more than some can say, but it clearly had its betters: One Piece, Dragon Ball, Pokemon, and Conan. But there is a reason why they aren't making more just from these listings. Since 2015 anime has resurged internationally and has led to their movies becoming even more profitable than they were before. For example, My Hero Academy actually does about as well as a normal Naruto movie in Japan, but it pushed higher by the international money. Also, Demon Slayers is at this moment the highest grossing Japanese film ever, and Jujutsu Kaisen is number 8...Oh and they are actually still in theaters and have made millions more in the past few weeks since I started this. Hell, even One Piece is doing better in the US than The Last or Boruto did, and Oda admitted in an interview alongside Kishimoto after Naruto ended that, 'he just had to accept that One Piece wasn't as popular internationally as Naruto was.' They are all blowing what Naruto-Boruto made out of the water despite the fact that it was suppose to have international appeal. Why bother doing another Boruto movie when everything else seems to be doing better then it now?

 

Why make a movie that struggles to make thousands while others easily make millions?

Because 999 rights and 1 wrong is devastating while 999 wrongs and 1 right is considered great success.

All anyone thinks about now is box office numbers.

Like comparing Transformers movies to Shawshank Redemption.

Box office numbers is an easy way to show initial success. Unless you want me to comb through charts, graphs, dvd sales to be more detailed, and I wouldn't know where to start with that.

 

Transformers and Shashank are different genres. I'm doing the same genre often produce by the same company for generally the same audience. I also decided to avoided comparing movies like Miyazaki's and similar work to avoid that. This more in the lines of showing Disney's animated or marvel movies box office and comparing them with maybe adding in some dreamworks and warner bro/DC.

Huh? So you're not willing to compare Transformer with Shawshank Redemption, but are willing to compare say The Incredibles with Shrek even though those are different genres? (Animation or CGI is not a genre. It is a style) I doubt Shrek is a superhero genre.

Okay, how about Ever After vs Romeo + Juliet? Romance movies?

Pulp Fiction vs Goodfellas or The Godfather? Gangster movies?
Transformer vs He-Man vs G.I.Joe? Since these are movies based on toy line and are action.



God knows we do do director comparisons. 

Point is, can you define how successful an artwork is based on how much money it makes? Alot of movies we consider cult classics failed so hard in the box office, but let's try another one more recent.

Which one is objectively the better movie? No, we can't go by subjective because you could hate one movie that many deem is a cult classic. Can something be popular, but not successful? Can something be successful and NOT popular? I am sure individually we can't define perfection, but if overall more people like one over the other...does that define it?

Naruto the Last was a low rated movie and there was a lot of controversy around it. From what we have seen, most Naruto fans HATED Naruto the Last, but loved Road to Ninja.

Well if you want to go into that much detail that's fine. If you want to do that or more, go ahead. I asked that you do it about Japanese animated movies though since that's is what this topic is about.

 

When I made this topic over a month back it was with the thought, "People still obsess over how the Last did on this site. So, to help them move on. Let's look at something simple box office numbers to show how poorly it did compared to other movies that are similar if not often from the same company. Since streaming has revitalized interest in anime new movies after if are likely going to be more and more successful making the Last and Boruto look even worse, and if they look worse to you; imagine what do you think the executives see?" Sorry that wasn't good enough for you.

Oh decided to look at Dragon Ball Super Hero to see how it doing so far.

 

Domestic: $32,662,582 

 

First Week: $21,124,049  

 

Japan:$18,500,000 

 

First week:$4,983,931

 

World Wide:$70,562,582 

 

So, what do you all think will happen first. Dragon Ball getting another movie or anime or Boruto getting its own movie (that was not a package deal with the last)?

 

It already set at number six of movies on the second post, and only Broly made more money out of the dragon ball movies.
