For me personally I think every single Nuclear plant in the US should be taken over by the government. In specific one agency in particular.

The US navy. They are experts in nuclear reactor technology and to this day I have yet to find a single instance of a nuclear leak on an american ship since the inception of nuclear powered naval vessels.

Corporation should never be in charge of things like nuclear plants or any such institution where safety is a primary concern. The corporation will almost inevitably err on the side of profitablity and the bottom line, and the instant they do safety will suffer for it.

Case in point is the reactors that have broken down in Japan. The back up systems that should have been in place werent. The company did not prepare for that one in a million chance that something of this magnitude could happen, and the japanese people are now paying the price for that lack of vision.

This pretty cut and dry report of just the US related nuclear incidents makes the point pretty well against nuclear power- period.
http://www.lutins.org/nukes.html

(I've personally been opposed to nuclear power since the 3 Mile Island disaster in 1979- and another point debunking a nuclear industry myth- nuclear plants actually cost much more than even coal or natural gas burning plants do to build, plus the material is highly dangerous- moreso than even gas or coal, and "disposal" is very expensive and very unreliable- contamination lasts for many years for most of the materials . I'm not keen on coal or gas- petroleum or natural- natural is less dirty than petroleum, but it's more explosive and deadly in the short hand than petroleum- petroleum as we know quite well has more lasting damage on the environment- land, water and air. I'm neutralish on natural gas- it's the least bad of the above lot, so I'm inclined to not oppose it outright. Coal's harvesting is responsible for much environmental land devastation in my native region of the US, plus it's a major air polluter. I'm ambivalent on hydroelectric and geothermal- they are definitely clean but the plants themselves cause small scale environmental damage. Hydroelectric moreso than Geothermal. If environmental damage can be limited as much as possible I'm cautiously for them. The only truly safe powers are wind and solar, both which have been making leaps and bounds in becoming more viable as safe and cheap sources of electricity. Plus it's a source of electricity that won't tie you to a power company so it's even cheaper for individuals who can afford to build them.)

Hopefully they don't screw it up (although it's Japan we're talking about here, so I doubt that) Hopefully mother nature doesn't screw them big time.

Damn, Japan is totally and royally screwed. The only one who can really unite the Japanese would be the royals or Koizumi. Hell, for all I know, I think Koizumi should be PM again through an emergency referendum. If I were them, I'd ask for it. Or giving the emperor a large authority in the governmental matters as of now would also be good even if it's temporary. The Japanese are in dire straits and in need of a a leader who can unite them.

Koizumi made himself quite unpopular with the Japanese public with the various scandals he and the grossly misnamed LDP (they are actually quite right wing) kept getting themselves in- his sucessors Abe, Fukuda and were big sleazebags, and the LDP is responsible for creating the situation for companies like Tepco to ignore safety standards with little to no punishment. The DPJ is an improvement, but not enough. I think Takako Doi should come out of retirement and work with her female protege Mizuho Fukushima- the current head of the SDP to see if she can get the SDP (who are actually are basically the equivalent of the Green party in the US, but with more political power) to majority power and have Mizuho Fukushima become the first female prime minister of Japan. The SDP, like the Green party in the US have a lot of good ideas, and tend to fight hard to get them passed. Mizuho's surname would definitely make her name memorable to Japanese voters, and she marched with the Japanese protesters against Tepco recently too. She has a website here:

As bad as this "incident" was, it is to no comparison to the incidents that have occurred during our search for Fossil Fuels.

I do not in any way trust, or believe in Greenpeace. This are the same people who protested food progress and convince African nations to refuse the Green Revolution, in thus hundreds of thousands died of starvation and hundreds of thousands more are starving today. I see them as the people that if we allow to take over, will drive the world back into the stone age, and catsi, this plants are expensive, do you really think that the US government can maintain them, considering that it cannot maintain itself anymore.

Oh wth who cares!! We will all be immortal in 25 to 30 years anyways. Pollute the atmosphere, better yet, get a giant machine and suck it from the planet and sell it to an Alien race that wants it, who will it upset?! HA ha wacko.gif

What does GreenPeace and their supposed agenda have to do with the topic at hand?

Even if they had a hand in the failure of the Green Revolution in Africa, the main reason it failed was because of corruption, lack of infrastructure, and lack of water for irrigation. It was poor government, planning, and enviornmental factors, almost nothing to do with GreenPeace.

Besides, as Catsi said, even with regulation, private companies will almost ALWAYS choose profit over safety. Tecpo and BP are perfect examples of this. If I recall correctly, Norway's oil refineries are state-owned and have one of the best safety records of off-shore oil-drilling. If being unable to maintain a nuclear power plant safely and finance it is a big issue, that's even more reason to research and develop renewables.

And if current trends on lifespan are any indication, immortal? In the industrialized world, maybe. Third world, no.

I'm not sure why this thread was closed, as there is no good reason I can see to have done so, so I'm re-opening this thread. This is relevant world news and there has been no arguing or fussing, so no purpose in closing a thread that's still actively posted in. The situation in Japan is far from over, and people will continue to want and need a place to express their feelings about the situation. So this thread will remain open.

In the later article there's a bit about Mizuho Fukushima (the politician I noted a while back in this thread that had good policy stances) and how she is not giving up fighting for the Japanese people's welfare:

Mizuho Fukushima and members of Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). In the video, Ms. Fukushima presses MOFA on an extraordinary issue -- why are 40,000 dosimeters sitting in a warehouse at Narita airport and have not been distributed to people living near the Daiichi nuclear plant?
