I looked into some details about JJ said about the story for Rise of Skywalker, and he said that he went to consult with George Lucas..
Here is what JJ Said:
"This movie had a very, very specific challenge which was to take eight films and give an ending to three trilogies. We had to look at what was the bigger story. We had conversations amongst ourselves. We met with George Lucas before we started writing the script. These were things that were in real, not debate, but you look at the sort of vastness of the story and trying to figure out what is the way to conclude this. But it has to work on its own as a movie. It has to be its own thing. It has to be surprising and funny, and you have to understand it. You can't assume anyone has sat and watched eight movies before this one. And yet, I want a kid to be able to watch Episodes 1-9 and see that one story."
My quick thoughts: As for the whole Rey's lineage you've got Rian Johnson saying he doesn't mind if it gets retconned. So it is entirely possible Rey could be a Skywalker in that regard considering that JJ is the one who started the sequel trilogy, and Last Jedi pretty much threw out his plan for the rest of the sequel trilogy. Not gonna lie that's really got to suck for JJ because he already had a plan for the sequel trilogy, and Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson ripped it to shreds.... I'm sorry, but if plans were already made by the guy who started the trilogy why discard it? it makes no sense. I'll say this JJ's Episode 8 probably would've been more remembered than Last Jedi and less controversial in that regard. Oh well, I'm at least willing to see how this sequel trilogy comes to an end.. I'll say it's got potential to be the best in the trilogy, but we'll see when December rolls around.
