I'd like to apologise for the server's unreliability that everyone has been experiencing recently.

I have checked the news from our host - Dreamhost - and it turns out they have been having massive network problems for the past week or so. A very bad run of luck.

I'll quote what they had to say:

Our string of bad luck is not over yet. After the file server crash last weekend and the subsequent internal network issues that we have been cleaning up all week, this evening brought us a Los Angeles area power outage that took down our data center (again, we know…). This time the generators worked fortunately, but the UPS system did not. That means power was out for the data center for the few minutes it takes the generators to come online. Long story short… most of our equipment is all back online now and we’ll be working through the night making sure all of your websites are back up, too.

Right now we’re still down one fileserver and that’s being worked on. There’s also still a lot of websites down and those are being brought up as fast as possible.

Many of you have been writing in to say that you’re still having problems with your site speed and email connections. We’re still experiencing intermittent difficulties with NFS traffic and high loads on our web and mail servers as a result of the recent filer and power problems that we’ve documented here. Our admin team is continuing to work on these problems and we’re hoping to get everything back to normal soon. We thank you all for your patience during these trying times.

Hopefully, Dreamhost will be able to sort out their problems, and the admins and mods of this board will be keeping an eye on the situation. I'm just posting this so everyone knows what is going on.

Thank you for your patience, and I hope Heaven & Earth will be back to normal soon.

Well, Dreamhost are one of the best hosts around, and it was their glowing reputation that persuaded me to move H+E here. The past two weeks (or so) have been the only time they've had real problems.

I've just checked their status again. The curious among you can check how they're doing by looking at:

The good news is that they're now back on main power and are no longer running off generators (one caught on fire! ) The site outage that Sakura Blossoms mentioned was due to a power cut. As you can see from their rapid updates, Dreamhost are working their arses off, trying to get things sorted!

What a horrible run of luck. I wonder if they broke a hall of mirrors or something.
