You have to understand, this IS (well, WAS) Naruto's story. He's the titular character for crying out loud. That role, we NEEDED the background information so they can provide the audience, us, why he's the titular character in the first place. Added that info and some relevance in the story, since we were spoon fed with a ton full of background for the secondary main character's family, we could've at least have some sort of balance.
Yes, and his two main goals were to gain the village's respect/acceptance and become Hokage. He effectively accomplished both when he beat Pain.
He obviously wanted to end his loneliness, but never seemed to require meeting the family. Simply being told about them and their accomplishments meets that goal and if you want emotional impact, a flashback (which was used) or a Gaiden is sufficient. We needed to know why Naruto had Kyuubi and why he was left alone. Have him meet his parents or even talking about the extended family is not necessary to either. I would be fine with a short side-treck into this if that is all it was, but an extended trek like we got with the Uchiha? Again, what would that accomplish and how would that no sideline the actual plot? I see running into similar problems the Uchiha coverage caused.
I still do not understand why, given who Naruto is as a person and his motivations, why learning about the Uzumaki, in great detail, is needed? It was never information Naruto sought. If it was something he cared very much about and had been seeking on his journey, then yes, it matters. But it wasn't. Hell, even in the Gaiden with Sarada he emphasizes bond over blood. Besides satisying curiosity, what does it do?
I think after Pain is when Naruto should have run down (and caught up with Sasuke) and had their fight. Besides that, there was nothing left for Naruto to do. The one thing they could have done was test the mettle of his philosophy, but that chance has been there the whole time.
