For a while now I've wanted to start a thread about TV commericals.  The good, the bad, the dumb, the funny, or the ads that just make you wonder what the marketing team was smoking.

Advertisement says a lot about culture, and since we have a multi-national community here, I'm hoping to see vids, links, or screencaps of TV ads from all over.

I'll start.

First up:  Amish Secret, and the not-so-secret secret is that their pitchman is not Amish.

Amish.jpg

Where to begin with the list of fakery?  Well, first off, an actual Amish man would not sit for a portrait-style photograph or video.  His beard would not be trimmed.  He would not have a mustache.  And does his shirt look homemade to you?  No.  It looks like a stock Van Heusen, straight off a metrosexual manikin at Macy's.

The furniture polish might be great stuff, but they would have been better off not including the "Amish" spokesman.   :argh:

Second:  EVA Air

I like the tone and imagery in this video.  And quite simply, Takeshi Kaneshiro is very high up on my personal "Most Beautiful Humans" list so anything he's in gets my vote.

Have one to share?

The thing that always kills me about infomericials is how the so-called actors in them behave as if what they're trying to do is so difficult and tiring.  They always act so annoyed and overwhelmed, even by the simplest thing.  It's hilarious.

And this thread isn't just for dumb commercials.  I'd like to see ones people like, too.

Has anyone ever bought a product based on a commercial?

I like Geico commercials. Nearly always make me laugh. And Progressive commercials...

I never base my opinion on products off commercials, though I know they exist because of them and when I see the product I can be like "oh yeah, I saw this in the commercial". But I don't usually buy the product based off that...unless there's some kind of motivation. (I've bought snacks and drinks because they had fictional characters I was interested in on the package. That's kinda useless, but I do it anyway. *shrug*)

The dog enthusiast in me likes this commercial:

While the commercial is of course pushing their own product--I would not say they're the best dog food brand out there, I was happy to see this commercial aired a few years ago because it encouraged people to do more research on what they were feeding their pets. Feeding a carnivore a meat-based diet just makes sense.

Here are two of my favorite ad campaigns.

First, Real Men of Genius - Bud Light

Second, Mayhem - Allstate

Probably the most amusing one to me right now:
