Yeah... apparently I just know how to use a computer and not really how to fix one hehe sweatdrop.gif I have two computers, one is my dad's, that's running really really slow. D: It's probably just the age that's making it that way, but do you know if there's anyway to make it run better without re-formatting the whole thing? It doesn't have to run like new, though that'd be awesome... I just kinda want it running faster and better without having to lose all my programs and files. =\

I don't really have the specifics of the computer, but mine is:
QUOTE
80 GB Hard drive
Intel Celeron D 2.80 GHz
512 RAM
XP Professional SP2

That's all the info I know how to look up XD And yeah... not very good specs... but hey, I said it was old...

>.> My dad's is even older and he doesn't particularly want a new computer yet, but here's the specs that I could find:
QUOTE
40 GB Hard drive
Intel Celeron D 2.80 GHz
256 RAM
XP Professional SP2

X.X looking at these specs now makes me realize just how far computers have advanced nowadays lol

Well my computer just lags, especially for surfing the net and playing internet games XD. My dad's computer lags at everything. It takes forever to open up just the start menu, control panel, my computer, etc. Is there anyway to fix these? All I know if so far is defragment and spyware/adware scans.

try emptying the internet cache and temporary files for yours to see if that speeds up the surfing. your dad's i'll have to think on it some and post later.

Ram won't help if it already lags at the start menu.

Well, Muimui... I think you'll HAVE to reformat. Something in your system is definitely eating up all the memory allocation. That happens to my laptop often. >_<

Oh dear god. D:

Is that how slow your computers are? My laptop is ancient now by today's standards. Bought it 2006, it's fast for my needs, but wow.. O_O

If possible, scan both computers fully.

Lee-chan, what do you use for spyware scans?

Anyway. Here's a couple of things you can do.

1. download CCleaner
2. download RegscrubXP

Then, run those two... i'm pretty sure if you haven't run regscrub on your xp, expect to get around 300+ problems on the first run.

There's probably a lot more things we can do to your computer to make it run faster without reformatting/upgrading like:

1. Turn off Automatic Updates
2. Remove unnecessary programs
3. Disabling/Removing startup programs

Anyway, there you go Lee-chwan. I'll try and help you if you need more help hehe

FUH i so had dibs on that one B(

lemme think of oneeee... OH OH OH OH LEECHWAAAAN!!! 8D

Whenever you run CCleaner go into Tools -> System Restore and then delete all the unnecessary restore points! Those things take up a huge chunk me thinks :teehee:

Oh and disable your screen saver too emoticon_monocle.gif

Ah, I'll download those two. But I'm curious... why must I turn off automatic updates? I've also seen on your Computer Maintenence thread to use Avast. Why is that better and why do you consider Norton and McAfee trash? I've been using Ad-Aware, Super Anti-Spyware, and Norton Anti-virus so far...

My dad's computer feels hopeless. I haven't touched it in a while since I posted this because when I try to log on it, it feels like it doesn't fully load up. I'm just staring at the desktop without being able to click on anything. The mouse is always that sand bottle thingy. So installing anti-virus and anti-spyware/adware scanners is a difficult task. =\ I might have to reformat on that one...

well... if you already have the newest version of ccleaner I don't think you need regscrub anymore as it have the registry scanning too. another advice that I can give is to move your unnecessary program to another place like DVDs (This is what I do most especially for my animes), other hard drive or straight out delete/uninstall. De-fragging your computer also works wonder too and compressing as it gives more space in your HD. other than that, I dunno what else can you do.

Lee-chwan,

Avast detects viruses that Norton can't.

And automatic updates bloat up your hard drive, and slows down your computer, IMO. If you're downloading it, and you turn it off before it finishes, it re-downloads it, and it doesn't replace the old download.

I think it's best to download it automatically, and then install them manually. I prefer just turning them off completely.

Try going on Safe Mode and delete the programs that you don't need. Or you can remove the updates by downloading this: Windows XP Update Remover

And twin, Regscrub detects some errors that ccleaner doesn't. XD
