Wish that Kishi would just stop trying to 'fix' Naruto, I guess that no one ever told him the phrase 'digging your own grave'. I will remember fondly the characters that made me love Naruto that were sacrificed at the all-mighty altar that is money (and crazy fan boys/girls).

My mind was wandering around last night, a common occurrence, and this thought popped into my head. Is Kylo Ren/Ben Solo the Itachi Uchiha of the Star Wars Universe?

Here's what I mean, we learned that Itachi witnessed something near the end of the Third Shinobi War that caused him to manifest the Sharingan, and it affected him greatly, so much so that he would do pretty much anything to achieve world peace. While we don't know (yet) why Ben Solo turned to the Dark Side and became Kylo Ren, I am wondering if it was something similar to Itachi's childhood experience; he saw something that affected him so greatly that was willing to do anything to not see it again. Ben Solo/Kylo Ren is obviously a mix of Jacen and Anakin Solo from the EU Star Wars books, and those who have read the books know that Jacen turned to the Sith partially because he lived through a devastating war that made him truly question his morals and the system he was fighting for. A bit like how Itachi had to question his own beliefs regarding the ninja system and turning to the Akatsuki in their belief of fear being the only way to achieve peace?

My own theory as to why Ben Solo turned to the Dark Side is that he didn't believe he could ever live up to the reputations of his parents and uncle, and in wanting to get out of their shadows, he went down a slippery path that brought him to the attention of Snoke. I remember a line that Kylo said, something about how this pain is tearing him apart, and I wonder if this is the regret he has for the things he has done but doesn't believe he can ever truly go back to Ben Solo, and the only way is to keep moving forward.

All I could think when I watched the movie was that Kylo reminded me of Zuko from ATLA. Not sure which side is for him, and struggling with a bit of an identity crisis.

Itachi, however, knows what he's doing and who's side he's on. His own. He never seems to be having an identity crisis or a struggle with what he's doing. Early on, he makes the decision about how he's going to be, and he sticks to that unwaveringly. No matter who gets killed or injured.

It will be interesting to see how the history of the movie plays out, and just what Kylo is like. But my money is on a conflicted immature son who's been gifted with middling power (like Zuko not being as proficient as Azula as a nice parallel to Kylo and Rey), who has to fight an inner battle of conscience as well as an outer battle to eventually resist being used by the dark side.

I would say he kinda reminded me of how Zuko was in the first season of Avatar The Last Airbender.

I did saw the Zuko parallels too, but Zuko went throught an redemption arc I'm not sure Kylo can have. He did took part in the destruction of an planet and the murder of millions if not billions of people. And to have insult added to injury he murders *bleep* in cold blood, of all people. Can he really change for the better after all this? And more importantly, will any atempt of redemption be accepted by others? At this point Rey hates his guts and want him dead. She will never forgive him. This is quite an different contrast from Luke who wanted to save his father from the dark side.

If anything he's Sasuke. He's spoiled because he was seen as the new hope for the next generation, he betrayed his master, idealizes his past family members, wants revenge for said past family members, he fears the bonds of the people he was once close to, and his strength comes from how much darkness and anger he can surround himself with.

sounds about right. He lacks the complexity to be like Itachi in the first place. Well before Kishi ruined his motivations and ideals plus turning him into a gary stu :zaru:

It's still pretty likely that he will go back to the light at the final part of the trilogy, only to die in heroic sacrifice.

While I do think there are some similarities to Itachi and Sasuke, my biggest problem with the comparison is that Sasuke and Itachi were absolutely the best, by far. More skilled/gifted/talented than anyone around, any of their peers, any of the Akatsuki, as well as 99% of the Uchiha clan.

And Kylo Ren simply is not. His power, which he presumably has honed over the years, is overshadowed by Rey's raw talent which has only just awakened. (Besides that, his being immature and hot headed, doesn't do his talent any favors).

Emotionally though, just like you listed above, I see some similarities between Kylo and Sasuke too. The struggling child of a great dynasty, of whom great things are expected. If anything, Sasuke is manipulated by almost everyone around him (save for Team 7). So although he has great power, inside he's a mess! In that way, he's very much like Kylo!

One last thing I forgot to add earlier: the scene of Kylo and his lackeys on the battlefield reminded me strongly of some of the Akatsuki imagery with Pain-Nagato-Konan.

I've seen a lot of Zuko comparisons. It's too early for me to make any sort of comparisons.

For what it's worth - I hope Ren does NOT have a redemption arc. It'd be a nice change of pace.
